I appreciate the conversation surrounding smart phones and adults. Too many people talk about screen time and the effects on kids without being honest about the effects on us all!
You guys and your podcasts and the sharing of your lifestyle choices are the #1 contributor to my decisions to homeschool my children and embrace screen-free parenting. THANK YOU!
I so wish I could entirely give up my smartphone. Unfortunately, the only way I can reach my family consistently, as a foreign missionary is with a call service app like WhatsApp or Telegram. The country we work in does not even allow me to call a direct line outside of the country. It would also be super expensive even if I could. But I love and agree with what you're promoting here. We need to be the difference.
I loved the part around 14:00 when Elijah talks about that awkward time where life feels like waiting out until heaven and how everything besides winning souls felt “pointless.” That could be an entire episode on its own.
Love this podcast so much! Such well thought through, mature handling of really important topics. You’re really helping form my perspective on a lot of big issues, so thanks for all you do!
I was considering asking y'all about this topic yesterday. My teens were invited to join a homeschool book club, but all the moms keep up on schedules on facebook or a groupme app. I told one of rhe mothers today that I would have to buy anew phone to join in, and she said she would just text me. Though she also suggested I get an iphone 8. I have an old mini ipad, but it's too old to be compatible with the app, and I'm anti facebook.
Thank you for teaching you kids the way you do. One of the reasons I think homeschooling is looked down on is that the kids are so sheltered they ethier go off the deep end or they're so scared they can't function.
My husand, children and I never had a smart phone or internet until a year ago and we are 33. This past year my husband and I got smart phones and ever since it has brought me such anxiety with all the things there are to listen to and watch. We are Christians so what we choose to watch or listen to is good but you can have to much of a good thing. It can become overwhelming very fast. I don't regret getting it because it was quite the experiment but we are going back to how we did life before, there was so much more peace and simplicity.
I grew up with hymnals, and I knew where each of my favorite songs were in it. I could find songs very quickly because of the frequency of singing them. I loved it very much!! I would love if we used hymnals again!
I went 4 years without a smart phone. Then as my kids got older I started taking on a lot of leadership positions like coaching sport teams, leading a coop, hosting large events and it was near impossible without a smart phone. I love what i have built but I do dream about going back to the no smartphone days. Mixed emotions.
Totally unrelated: my eye has been twitching watching your weeds go to seed behind you haha. It's taken several episodes. We have acreage and pasture in North western Montana, not too far away from you, and wish we'd have gotten on top of the weeds year 1! It's too late for you this year but save yourself some trouble and attack them early next year!!
My husband was at a coffee shop and this homeless man was asking around for a ride. And my husband got him in his car (which I find crazy honestly) . He asked to go to his church. On the drive he made fun of my husbands non-smart phone. The homeless man who was asking for money and a ride was making fun of my husband. He even stopped at the ATM to get cash for this guy. So yeah. Technology is hardly a luxury anymore. It’s permeated so deep into our culture that homeless people need one. It’s fascinating.
Hi! I really enjoy your podcast and appreciate all the book recommendations you share. Do you have a list available that compiles all the books mentioned in your episodes? Also, do you note who recommended each book? It would be great to have this info all in one place. Thanks so much!
Do you know what I miss? I miss the pre smartphone days of mp3 players. While I often use my active time being quiet, thinking, praying, I also value listening audiobooks and podcasts (like this one) while I’m not sitting next to a laptop. The other huge problem is how children can listen to audiobooks, especially if more than one child needs a device at the same time. Anyone relate? I also really appreciate having a GPS. I realize K and E are not telling me I need to follow their choices, but I would like to “regress” to not using a smartphone, but end up keeping it anyway.
Same, I love listening to audio books and podcasts, and I still love watching CZcams videos too aka videos like this one 😜😂 those 3 things are What holds me back...well and maybe the Chickfila app 😂
Funny story… A friend of mine just got back from Amsterdam. It is true that bikes have their right of way but they do come close to running down pedestrians frequently. She shared, that if there is only 2 feet between you and the person you’re walking with they will not hesitate to ride in between you with no warning, at very fast speeds. Lol 😓
You will have kids leave the faith whether they are homeschooled, in private schools or public school. I think it’s a bias view to assume that homeschooling your kids will assure they will remain in the faith. I will say that as a former teacher and wife of a current high school teacher, there’s a lot of things on the internet about our public schools that are just not true for the majority. You hear of a few crazy stories and people assume all schools are like that. It’s just not true. Also as far as children remaining in the faith, they will get exposed to bad things eventually. Regardless of when that is, it is the parents job to set that firm foundation whether the child is home schooled or not. I went to public school and as a Christian there I learned to say no to ungodly things even in my elementary years. This idea that kids won’t have the ability to do so is faulty. Also i think it is interesting that some countries actually see homeschool as a form of child abuse because the socialization among peers is critical in the development of the child. For a child to wait until high school or college to handle some of these things I think can end in disaster and have the child actually ill equipped for what is ahead of them. Sorry if the comment comes off negative. Just as a former educator and wife to an educator I get frustrated with Christians making judgments about the public school system that just are not even true. And it makes hard working teachers out to be an enemy. Which let me also bring up the fact that now everyone thinks they can be a teacher, it’s just not true. There have been kids that came to my classroom after being homeschooled and some were ahead while others were behind.
I did NOT know you could disable CZcams shorts! I love videos like this one but hate getting sucked in to pointless streams of shorts. THANK YOU!
I appreciate the conversation surrounding smart phones and adults. Too many people talk about screen time and the effects on kids without being honest about the effects on us all!
Can I just say PREACHHHH! So good. You guys are changing the culture. THANK YOU. I needed to hear this perspective.

This was one of the best episodes I’ve ever heard. You guys shed light on some areas I hadn’t thought of before. Thank you!!!
We are so grateful for your consistency in sharing good knowledge with us. We appreciate you guys!!! ❤❤ God bless you!

I love this so much! Thanks for being open.
Such a great podcast. I love this topic and so helpful to know what you’ve done and what you’ve changed !
We are 68 & 58, neither one of us has ever had a smart phone.
I loved the part around 14:00 when Elijah talks about that awkward time where life feels like waiting out until heaven and how everything besides winning souls felt “pointless.” That could be an entire episode on its own.
I thought they were Reformed Calvinists and so many in this group have given up sharing the gospel and evangelizing. Hmmm.
Are they??? I would like to see a whole episode on this.
You guys motivated me to order the wise phone 2. I still really wanted a good camera and gps.
I wish these were available in Canada 😢
LOVE! So motivating and I am now saving for the Wise Phone

Can yall make a wall tent tour video! Not common to see wall tent tours from big families but they're very helpful 🌸 thanks!
How do you turn off the “short” videos for 30 days?

Please tell us how do you listen to podcasts or CZcams with no smart phone?
I think they do some of that on laptops.

The parental controls give parents so much false security. It actually makes it scarier because they let their guard down.
Great point ❤
So true!
Growin' a beard! Go Elisha!

Just a note, it’s actually “right of way” not right away 😊

😮 I was using auto dictate. That will teach me. 😂
If you suddenly change because of kids thats annoying, go without tech yourselves when you were young, then ask your kids to do the same.
Very upsetting to see Katie wearing very non modest/ mini skirts lately while speaking on a christian podcast:(
Yes I've been a bit taken aback by this too.
