  • It's time for a proper introduction to my 1983 Porsche 928S. Join me as I walk you around and show you a close-up of the condition it's in now, and learn more about where I found it. Though I'm a ways away from being able to get back to work on this old girl, I wanted to a least give you a sense of the condition it's in now, and some of what I plan to do with it. So I hope you enjoy this episode and can hang-on a while longer until I can officially get back to work on it.

    This video just popped up on my feed. Don't know if you've made progress in last 8 mo. If not, here's a couple of tips.
    1. To test the LH module, start by pulling the hose coming out of the fuel filter that sends the gas to the engine (I've owned S4s, so assuming yours is like mine - fuel line out of tank to fuel pump to fuel filter to front). We want to see if fuel is coming out of the filter when you try to start. Begin by honking the horn. If it works, swap the horn relay with the LH relay (checking for bad LH relay). If no fuel out of filter, then relay is good (confirm by honking horn with LH relay). Next remove the fuel pump relay and hotwire the circuit - jump 30 to 87. Your fuel pump should energize and send fuel out the filter (have a hose and gas can to collect it). If your fuel pump works and the LH relay is good, then you have a bad LH. Also, with a good LH you should hear the fuel pump energizing when you turn the key in the ignition. No sound = bad LH.
    2. Try this on your scratch. IF you can find a good bottle of paint that matches, use a soft brush and fill in the scratch. You want to fill it as much as possible, a little over (bump or blob) is OK. Let it fully dry (24 hrs is best). Then take some 1500 sand paper and wet sand the scratched area until it's smooth with the rest of the paint. Don't go hog wild, just sand as little of area on either side as you can. Then get a buffer, use a mild rubbing compound like Turtle Wax and polish an area 1/2" on each side of the scratch. Next use a swirl compound and expand to 1" either side. Final step is a polish compound over the area. The scratch should be gone and the area shiny. I've used this process on lots of nicks and scratches to perfection. The trick is getting a color match with your paint.

      Sorry I've taken so long to get back to you. First off, thank you so much for all the info. Very cool that you've been down this road already and have a lot of good insights. I look forward to finally getting started on this project, but have had far too many other things that keep taking priority. I'll be glad to get your advice once I'm finally underway on the 928 again.
      Thanks again for all the pointers and for watching. Much appreciated.

    You may save yourself a headache & $$$ by paying someone who knows the car inside and out. But if you like doing this go for it. I've had mine since '83. A good mechanic will minimize false starts and wrong parts.You gottah love it.

      I'm sure you are right, and I expect I'll get to a point where I just need an experienced pro to get me over a hurdle ot two, but I did buy it to work on it as long as I continue to enjoy doing so. Wasn't really intended to be a good financial investment, but a good sentimental investment one; you know, the often expensive kind. ;)
      Thanks for your comments and for watching.

    Looks like it will be a great project and fun when it's done! I'll be following this for sure. Shame about the tie rods. Prime reason I don't farm transports out unless I can't avoid it. I'm more upset when things are damaged by professionals vs. my own stupidity.

    • @twc-projects

      Thanks. Yes, I'm eager to get working on it, but just have so many other projects that need to be done. And I agree about farming work out. This car doesn't seem to have a tow hook with it, so something I'll be sure to address before too long.
      Also, I'm still debating getting a 4 poster lift, as I was eyeing a 944 turbo, thinking where would I put it. But I don't even have time for this car, and the bidding went too high on the 944 for my blood. The turbos are shooting up in price now, but not as high as the 928. Wish I had snagged a 944 too when they were practically giving them away a few yrs back. Oh well.
      Thanks for watching and your support. Much appreciated.

    great car, but very difficult to repair, how much did it cost?

    • @twc-projects
      @twc-projects  Před 2 lety +1

      Bought it almost 4yrs ago for 2,500. I think it would be difficult to find one in as good of condition as this for under 5,000 now. But I didn't buy it because I thought I could make money on it or because I thought it would be easy to repair. Bought it for sentimental reasons, and the work needed isn't overwhelming, just time consuming. I don't plan to sell it even once it's finished, which may be after I retire at the rate I'm going. :)
      At some point I'll try to find a 944 as well, of which I'll highly customize--engine, drive train, suspension, brakes, ... Now that will be what I call a lot of work. Need to get this 928 running first though.
      I'll have more on this when I finally get the garage fully operational. Thanks for watching.

    I've always said if I ever got a Porsche, it would be a 928S. I've always loved these cars. BTW, how much land do you folks have out there?

    • @twc-projects
      @twc-projects  Před 2 lety +2

      It's about 5acres, which sometimes start to feel small until 25+ trees come down in one storm like they did this winter. I'll be cleaning those up until 4th of July..
      Glad you like the Porsche too. It's gonna be a lot if work, but I'll love it just the same. Thanks for watching.

      Thanks for the correction. I haven't done anything in so long with this car that any facts I once knew have faded. In the first video I stated the weight of the 928 as being the combined weight of the car and trailer. And in this video I couldn't remember any facts. So thanks again for keeping me straight. And thanks for watching. Much appreciated.

    Awesome discussion on the 928. Here's a fascinating look at a pure 928 enthusiast The Midnight Rider

      Thanks. I just watched one last night where they talk about the skyrocketing value of the 928 since the Risky Business car auctioned off recenlty for nearly $2MM. Made me rethink my plan; that I should fully restore mine instead of resto-mod. Check it out: czcams.com/video/QCQNPD8edgI/video.html

      I wanted a manual too, but pretty hard to find considering the far majority produced were automatics. Some people say they like the automatic better on the top end, buy who ever gets to drive over 100mph anyway unless you're on a track. I took what I could get, and glad I did, now that I'm watching the value climbing on these. Now I just need to get back to restoring it.
