This video was immensely helpful. I replaced my spark plugs completely using this as a guide. You deserve a cold beer and free pizza.
But is the Beer free to?
Good video. Please note that this refers to a 451. If you have a 450 (like mine) you need to be aware that you have to change six plugs - three on top and three underneath the engine. The plugs are different from those in a 451. To access the lower plugs, you have to remove the rear panels and the crash-bar beneath. You also need a special tool to remove the leads from the plugs. It's a right pain, like most jobs on a Smart. If you have a mechanically adept three- year- old who can reach most of the parts for you it helps. My fingers, unfortunately, are like sausages.
Thanks so much for such a great video - people like you are the reason CZcams is so good
Thank you Nathan for the time ,patience making the video. It did save me the headaches I might have in counter before doing mine. Keep making more smart car videos.
Good job. A couple of hints. Get yourself a 1/4 inch socket set, its way better for getting in tight spaces like for those 10mm bolts. Also when you remove the wire socket push the tab and pull on the connector itself not the wires. Before you screw the plug all the way out remove the socket and push a short piece of hose over the plug to finish unscrewing and to remove plug from hole. Put the hose on the new plug to screw it in. Don't pull sideways when you tighten the plugs or you could break the porcelain (White part) of the plug.
@32:33 The cut and the staring at the camera reminded me of "Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog". I was worried you were about to tell me everything blew up. I am sad to see SmartUSA no longer has that pdf on that link you supplied. I'll look around some more for written instructions, but your video was easy to understand and watch. Thank you.
You have inspired me to take on this challenge. I just got a quote from the local smart center. Of course, it is astronomical. Because my 2008 had no documented service history, to be safe I'm doing both services one step at a time. I can't do anything involving getting on the ground so I had the oil changed at half the price of smart. You did a fabulous job and I hope to have a positive result as you did. Thanks for your video!
Michael...just an idea... I have a video doing an engine oil change on one of my Diesel Smart cars using a vacuum pump that you can do whilst standing up... I hope that helps.. !
I had the same ordeal with my local Smart dealer. The last time I was there they wanted $160 for a simple oil and filter change! I got a genuine Smart oil filter on eBay for $20 and the Mobil oil from Auto Zone for about $30 and did it myself. You only need a 23mm wrench to remove the drain plug. I shudder to think what changing out the plugs would be!
Thank you for the post.
I had same issues on getting the coil pack off of the #2 or #3 cylinder...I used a 1/4" u-joint, low profile socket, and then 3" extension to free coil.
Thanks again and I should have taken video of my issue.
Keep posting videos on maintenance of smart.
I will try to do same.
Have driven 10K miles in 7months....now it is going to winter storage.

A 5/8 spark plug socket would have a rubber piece in it that would slide over the top of the plug and would hold onto the plug to pull it out.
Correct, mine does.
That is what I was thinking
Good Job Nathan, and in that heat too!! its my next task when the rain stops here in the UK!! well done and love the honesty in this video!
Thank you for tutorial and thank you for taking your time to detail explain.
I'm replacing the plugs in my wife's Smart tomorrow and your video made things a lot easier to understand. I would humbly suggest using a spark plug socket which has a rubber insert to hold the plug, and would also suggest putting a dab of anti-seize lubricant on the threads of the new plugs going in. As for dropping something in that space, couldn't you stuff a bath towel in there to prevent anything from falling in there? Just a thought. Great video, thank you, good job!
James McNeely I would of put the socket first, then place the plug gently into the plug hole.
Excellent video. Nice job! That 'small ratchet' without the ratcheting is a breaker bar.
Hey Nathan, great video. No need to apologize for stuff like noise of not using technical terms for stuff. You worked hard to make this. Well done! And, thank you!
Just replace mine, 10mm wrench can do the job much easier that using socket. thanks for your video to show so detail step by step.
Pretty useful information - I will try this myself; will consider using a piece of rubber hose to extract and install the spark plugs. Liked the idea of moving the engine bay cover behind the cargo storage cover.
Very good video. Step by step and includes problems you encountered. Thanks.
You just saved me about $800. Thank you very much, sir!
$800 to change 3 spark plugs?
@@dwalker399 yeah. The mechanics around this area think I’m stupid.
Great video! I just purchase a 2015 Smart Brabus edition and I love it. I do my own maintenance but have never worked on a Smart car. That's a 1/4" breaker bar... maybe 6" long? There are ratchets the same size, but I'm not sure if these will work here. Also, a special 3/8 drive spark plug deep socket has a rubber insert that grabs the plug and helps pull it out. There are different sizes available and you can buy a single one for about $5.00. I do recommend using a small amount of anti-seize lubricant on the new plugs (only on the threads) to ensure they come out easily on the next scheduled change. Engine heat can cause the plugs to seize and damage to the engine threads can occur when removing plugs.
Great video! I like how you took your time to explain everything . I appreciate this video. I think I have enough courage to change mines 😁
Thank you for the video, was able to change my Spark plugs no problem 😊
Excellent video and well done, thanks Pete from England
Great job Nathan!
Thank you mate, really useful!
Good idea using the coil for extracting the loose plugs.
You da best! Much appreciated!!
If you use a 3/8 fuel hose. It will grab the plug and pull out. Also when putting in the hose will slip before you cross thread
The biggest help bro, thanks a lot
well done on the spark plug retrieval ... thanks for the video too
Great the way you persevered even though you got stuck a couple of times. Entertaining thanks 8-)
Nice job on the video for a first timer.
Excellent video and I’m just about to do my own. 👍👍
Great video, big help, thanks....Bob
Thanks for great video, love ther REMOVAL TOOL, GREAT THINKING
Muchas gracias señor.
i had enough of a problem with the air filter and those were just clips! just had the thermostat replaced monday, $928!!!!!! but i got a new C300 as a loaner for the weekend.
Thanks. I plan on changing mine.
Very helpful video, thanks!
It makes me glad my car only has three cylinders. That really is a cramped space to work in. I've changed plugs on a number of other cars. They were easy peasy compared to the smart.
smart451cab if you have done anything else on it like oil and fan belt? is it easier than the spark plugs?? thanks for a great video
@Cammzo Jo9: I have done an oil change. Actually, the only oil change I've ever done on any car. Money is tight though so I went the DIY route, and it was pretty easy to do.
I haven't done the spark plug change yet. I started into it...got so far as removing the spark coils and loosened one plug, before I realized I needed several other tools, which I've now got in hand. I got a 1.5" ratchet extension, a stubby ratchet, a 10mm socket and a magnetic plug socket. I'll finally be completing (I assume) the plug change in the next day or two.
Nope, I haven't changed any belts yet. I did change out the air intake for a silicone one ... makes changing/cleaning the air filter a LOT easier due to its flexibility.
smart451cab thank u very much 😀 I'm considering buying one for a first car so it is very helpful
man, you look TIRED at 32:26 LOL.
BTW, thanks on the job and the willingness to share how to do it. Extremely useful. Maybe a combination wrench would be better for the coil bolts to avoid clearance issues (I´ll try that next weekend on my '13 451). I´ll let you know how it goes.
Thanks a lot!!
I found removing the plugs from the hole a problem. I put a rubber ring inside the socket and pulled the plug right out and put the new one back in. I imagine a piece of clear plastic tubing would work well too.
great helpfull video, thanks
get a piece of vacuum hose that will fit over the white insulator part the plug. you can fish it down the spark plug recess and grab the loosened plug and also use it to screw in the new plug before tightening with the ratchet.
rex kars
Great idea.
I've read on a few Smart owner sites that this is the way to go, to use a piece of vacuum hose, and to also use a smear of anti-seize grease when you install new plugs.
@@jamesmcneely5124 not needed on NGK plugs and can actually be detrimental as it has the potential to increase the level of torque required to both install and remove them.
Thank you very much ;)
When i removed the spark plugs i noticed they were soaked in oil, does that mean the engine is shot, even with new ones still shakes
For your INFO-Talking about close quarters-Dropped the Coil Bolt on the last one-right side, Boy was I "PI$$ED!!!" and of course could not find. But "NO WORRIES" , went to Lowe's for a 6 mm Diameter thread, 2 cm long and a 10 mm head (The rep. did not care about the 10 mm head, but it came with one anyway-LOL) 5 bolts (Stainless Steel) for $1.18 with my military discount . Perfect Fit. Still saved a few $$$$-Thank You!!
I think is not necessary unplug the conector. I didn't need that.
Your tutorial helped me a lot.
Many thanks
What spark plug should I get? 2016 Smart Fortwo prime 9l.. no auto parts store seems to know for sure which brand/part number to get...? Mercedez Benz doesn’t want to say... just tells me I need to bring it in for service and not do it myself
Spark plug socket would work wonders. They have a rubber insert that holds on to the plug to pull it out.
thx for showing how to fix
on the 2015 smart cars the spark plugs are on the back side of the engine? please advice?
Where did you get the spark plugs from?
They tried to make it as tight as possible in there, but that was the best they could do. :-)
Cool trick with coil magnet. Good job, Good camera angle, Good descriptions.
(just to be nice, those are bolts not screws ;-)
Would bad spark plugs cause for some shaky idling while at a stop light? And dirty air engine filter?
Yes they would. But only with VERY bad spark plugs and VERY dirty air engine filter
I just replaced mine smart fortwo. Find out that is way easier to to do it from passage seat with seat fold down, rather than doing it from trunk
A 10mm open end wrench could have worked. Maybe even the boxed end. Were you sweating cause of the heat or sweating losing that bolt?
How did you gauge the tightness of the spark plugs? You skipped that in the video. TIA
Good job
From out of the box “THINKS”:::obviously tight places are a major pain. In this case having the proper socket and small ratchet is helpful.
Here’s the trick your waiting for to either to remove or certainly to do the spark plug install:::cut a rubber fuel line to the length you’ll need, slip it over the spark plug it will give you the flexibility you’ll need. When twisted in pull the rubber line off and finish with the regular tools. Don’t forget to take that extra minute to stuff a towel into that gap between the engine and frame to catch those screws or whatever’s you might drop into the “ABYSS” forever. Your welcome !!! The Racer 😜
After loosening the plugs, use a length of rubber tubing,(fuel line, heater tubing) insert and slip it onto the plug, then use it to remove the plug. Used this on a Suzuki wagon r.
Good Job 👌😉🇵🇱😁🤔
How you got this through this video without swearing every other word on cylinder 3 is amazing! I would love to kick that engineer in the balls for putting that vacuum hose by the spark plug. They could of at least made a bigger cut out in the engine compartment.
I'm surprised. My 09 fortwo spark plugs have never been changed, and I'm at about 100k miles. I always thought the plugs were in a troublesome location but I suppose I was wrong
Nathan, you should be able to buy an oil pan gasket and drop the oil pan and get the socket out that you dropped into the engine case through the spark plug hole..
Lynn, thank you for the suggestion, but I did not drop the socket in the spark plug hole- I dropped it in the space right behind/inside the rear bumper (I cut that moment around 29:25. It happened after I finished tightening that screw)
After looking around in there with a camera and flashlight, I'm pretty sure it would have rattled its way down and fallen out of the bottom of the car while I was driving at some point. Its been over a month now of daily highway driving to and from work without any issues, so I think I'm in the clear.
Sorry about a late reply, but if it dropped into the engine through the spark plug hole, how would it get past the piston and into the crankcase? Would cause serious damage to the engine if it was started while a socket was in the cylinder or combustion chamber.... Not sure you fully understand engines Lynn.....
I was thinking maybe stuff a bath towel in there to prevent anything from dropping in there?
Yes, if somehing besides a liquid went into the cylinder trough the spark plug hole, you shouldn't reinstall the spark plug, you have to fetch it with a magnet or you will have to take the head off si you can reach the cylinder head, there's no other way to remove a solid piece of metal from the combustion chamber.
A real 5/8 spark plug socket has a rubber neck inside it when the plug is fully unscrewed it will hold the spark plug in the socket for extraction. For putting spark plug back in I like to take about eight inches of rubber fuel line and slip it over the tail end of the plug. This allows me to gently spin the plug into its threads and to avoid cross threading. When it's seated and threaded into its spark plug hole the simply pull the rubber hose off the plug and proceed to complete tightening with you ratchet.
We are having issues putting spark plug 3 back in
Just bought a 2013 Pure. Considering doing the service myself but won't that affect the service history on carfax? Before purchasing, I checked my '96 Cavalier. Carfax.com had it's service history. Btw, THANKS FOR THE VIDEO
It would affect the Service history.
I also have loads of service related and replacement videos for the 451 SMART
Good luck
Just a small bit of advice for anyone that wants to attempt this. Label the ignition coil wires cause they absolutely need to go in the same way they came out and do one plug at a time because you might drop a bolt or something in the spark plugs hole and that is no fun (best case scenario you'll be able to remove it with a magnet if it is metal, worst case you have to dismantle the engine to remove it).
Edit: Bonus advise use a fuel hose that fits on the plug 1 thread before the plug is about to come out and then pull.
You're are doing! no mechanical experience whatsoever...
Why choose this medium, do yourself a favour and go for some huge fashion or cook stream. All the very best for your future success. 👍
use a spark socket it has a busing to lift a plug with cocket
any idea why my coil pack wont come out after the bolt is removed?
I'm sure you already realized this but the reason it wouldn't come out is because your dad doesn't love you.
Now I know why I have been charged so much. Thanks.
Normally a 10 mm bolt has M6 thread. Funny is when the thread is worn out, you can use 1/4 inch BSF bolt. It has the same pitch, but is slightly thicker.
Thanks mang. Are you from Houston by any chance? I hear the Airport. I imagine you live in the apartments close to bush. If not oh well.
Big question though, do you have to disconnect the battery?
Jesus Garcia I was just following the instructions in the PDF provided by smart. As I recall there was no mention of disconnecting the battery in that.
Nathan Chiu I'm in Houston. Are u a smart owner??
I live in Houston and I'm a smart owner and I'm stuck by the bank, the smart don't want to start, I've checked the injection and ignition coils, but I can't check the spark plugs, I have not the 5/8" socket with me. Anyone can bring me one?
@@rusa69 have you tried turning off the car stepping on the break turning the car to the first position before it actually turns on just so that the lights go on. still foot on the break then turn the key back completely off. Still holding down the break for about 5 sec you should see the speedometer on the dashboard go up then down ....then let go of break. Then try starting the car. If that doesnt work theres another trick similar but you pull up the hand break switch it to N then to manual mode push it up to go on 1 gear let go of hand break back off to N let go of the break then try starting it... something like that
Good video...is definitely a help...thanks again!
10mm ring spanner for the 10mm bolts maybe?
How many miles would u change the spark plugs out? I know ford veh we don't sell them til 90k
I change my plugs every two years or 20,000.. checkout my other Smart 451 service videos
What?? Why so often? Isn't that going to strip the threads out?
@@smarte.r.1450 can u send ur link to do so, tks
I have re done the video as it was looking old popping up this weekend
I think it's that lent looking dust getting on the catalytic converter
piece of rubber tube to extract the spark plug.
I changed mine out on my 09 Smart and now it Backfires? Can you help me?
Murdocjunior
did you make sure you did not cross the wires?
Will Dan 👌👌👌👌👌
i was thinking to replace mine but now iv changed my mind )
Why have you only replaced three of the spark plugs? The smart 450 has six spark plugs
I don’t know about the 450, but this is a 451 model (from 2013). It has a three cylinder engine, and all the spark plug replacement guides I could find (including the one directly from Smart linked in the video description) only describe three spark plugs to replace.
The 450 has 6. The 451 has 3.
German overenginering, was not easier make removable cover to gain full reach to the engine ,I have one and believe me I won"t repeat the mistake in the future
U can get a mini driver for about 10 bucks… Great for these tight spaces
A socket is not always the best tool for the job you could have tackled some of the small screws much easier with a ring spanner also rather than risk dropping parts into inaccessible places use rags to lay under the area and catch any that fall.
I had an idea that the smart has 6 plugs that’s right?
The old 451 has 6. The new 450 has 3.
It looks like it's somewhat of a tedious task to do work on this car. But what car isn't these days??? A new Ford Explorer is a good example
Those screws are bolts
Interesting video, but the Smart has 6 plugs, two in each cylinder.
Actually the 451 takes 3 spark plugs. The older 450 takes 6 spark plugs.
Why not a spark plug socket?
That would probably work too, but I was just using the tools I had on hand.
You get a lot of burning rubber smell from your engine??
I think I know the smell that you are referring to, but I don't know if it is coming from the engine or the tires. I have not noticed a change in the smell (neither more nor less prevalent) since changing my spark plugs. My typical daily commutes are in the 10-20 mile range and almost entirely highway driving at 60-75mph.
I had problem with spark plug socket because it came off my 3" extension and was stuck down in spark plug hole when I tried to remove.
Yes can get positive locking extensions and socket combo, but not common in my tool box.
In general I agree with your question, but hard on this application. Must be very careful to keep socket in-line with plug to avoid cracking/damaging plug.
Cheers,
P
Spark-plug socket great for extraction.
N.G. for install
こんにちは♪・Spark plug fishing
I haven't watched the video get but the plugs come pre gapped and they're platinum DONT use a gap tool, you'll destroy the platinum tip cause they're very very lightly coated the bare minimum metal!
It’s called spark plug socket
A piece of fuel rubber hose
you don't see the used spark plug
The spark plug goes down in the hole? Good grief!
I used a magnet
Husk, der er 6 stk og ikke kun 3
Jimmy koch :No , smart 451 has 3 spark plug , 450 has 6
Quoted $170 to do this by the dealership.
honestly, that's worth it. I would probably screw something up with my odd working fingers.
