You can if you want. But an airbag is not going to deploy randomly. There are sensors that have to trigger it for deployment to occur. I have dealt with numerous steering wheels on modern cars. They don't burst at random. Anyone who thinks they do is paranoid.
Did your airbag light come on after removing the airbag? I replaced my steering wheel with an aftermarket steering wheel and mine came. I left the battery unhooked for 2 hours and triple checked the connector. I'm still trying to figure out how to reset the light.
