It’s time for a three-way Audi showdown!
The Audi S8 D2 was one of the fastest performance cars around back in 2001, but can it still hold its own against the newer S3 and A8 50 TDI?! It's powered by a 4.2-litre V8 that puts down 340hp, so it's apparently the most powerful here, given the S3 and A8 put down 310hp & 286hp respectively... But will it be enough?!

13.9 seconds at the 1/4 mile for a 20 year old car is by no means slow, extra points for the amazing sound and ronin movie.
@oahgfojsdljknsdlfw S8 has very slow gearbox compared to new A8. If S8 was manual + with good driver should won easily.

@The Legend of Texas I prefer an E38 over the W140. It looks waaay more modern inside and out. It was also the first European car with a sat nav and side airbags. W140 is probably more comfortable. Both are built like tanks, though.

The s8 was also abailable with a 6 speed manual transmission, the w140 and the e38 no, so they will never feel half as sporty as the s8 does. And who cares about not having a v12? The W12 was made out of two 3.0 vr6 and delivered more power than the BMW or Mercedes v12. Anyway I think that the 4.2 v8 is better, sounds better and weights way less and even being a v8 is more powerful than bmw v12. So again, you have no idea. But just by what you said at the end is obvious that arguing with you is a waste of time. And by the way, the audi s8 d2 is a masterpiece in design, that's why so many people love it. You should keep with your nazi stupid shit and avoid cars if you have no fucking idea about what you r talking

My mom had a 540i M Sport when I was growing up and it was the first car I drove when I was 15...it was such a well built car. It felt so solid and heavy in a good way, glued to the ground.

I think it’s because of insurance, or finance So if the owner of the S3 was ever questioned from his insurer/ finance company he would most likely say that was his car revving but not his car doing the drag race.

Automatic S8 was much slower than manual, as with all cars at that time. It's a shame you didn't have the latter for the test.

Manual was available only with pre-facelift models and 340hp. This is facelifted and 360hp. I guess on the paper they are about the same from 0 to 100kmh.

The gearbox shifting time play a big part in this
I think IT was Wright, that S8 os 1700kg+ but I agree S3 witch manuał woluld be a lot slower, turbo engineer are so hard to shift perfectly
Kévin Leroy the S8 gearbox shifts very very slow (I got the same in my S6 with the same engine btw. It’s faster from 100-200 than the Diesel but 0-100 it’s very slow)
@@davidhenneberg6772 Exactly. The A8 D5 comes equipped with the ZP 8HP55 which is arguably the best AT on the market today. It shifts almost as fast as a DCT... The S8 D2 5HP24 shifts very slow in comparison. Considering the power to weight ratios, it should have beaten the A8 50 TDI easily.
If they had the manual S8 it would easily win from the diesel.

black pilled yes cheap fast cars are usually cheap for a reason.. this one is absolutely no exception, but they are by far the easiest v10 cars (still pretty rare thou) to find and also the cheapest, so they certainly are quite awesome nonetheless

Our S6 Avant from 2000 which we sold after 19 years & 310.000 km (about 200.000 miles) had only 275 hp from the once 340 hp (we tested this shortly before). Age & usage is a drag on every one!

Nice race as always! But is it just me who thought the times where closer then the race showed me. I thought there was more then a second between number 1 s3 and the diesel a8.
It may look like the old audi lost in all tests but a sure thing is that car still look magnificent!
13.9 sec quarter mile from the S8 is very good. The factory claimed 14.4 sec when it was new. How do you measure the quarter time? ( GPS Race logic etc..) BTW very good video as always :)
Results are strange, actually. S3 seems to finish a lot more faster. Margins between all three are almost equal in numbers, but not in the video

S8 should be faster than 14.4 because my A8 runs in 15.0 with regular petrol

It's the post-facelift S8 with 360 hp. Tell by the thicker armrests and xenon plus.
Yes, you can tell by the "5V" badge on the engine... Armrests and xenon-plus headlights can be retrofitted :)

It should perform like the A8 diesel. It's just the petrol 50tfsi version, bit more power, less torque. Wouldn't be much different.

It wasn’t modded it has a decat which is a cheap exhaust mod that gets 0 power gains
It’s not a decat it has a resonator delete which adds 10-15bhp

Great video, love these comparisons. Give you a nice insight of whats been considered fast and how its changed. Thought the S8 would be faster, especially in the rolling race. I would bet that if dynoed, between the drivetrain loses, mechanical wear/tear, thisandthat and audi's underestimated declared horsepower, the s8 and 50tdi would be neck and neck in power.
