I'm a 72 year old geezer with experience with this so pay attention! Every car I ever owned that had "3-on-the-tree" I ended up putting in a floor shifter for exactly that reason. At the very least disconnect all the shifter linkages and inspect for wear, excessive slop, etc. sometimes you can shim up excessive slop with washers, and make sure pivot points are greased. Or just put in an automatic like I do these days. Now, get off my lawn Hippie!
My 68 chevy pickup had the floor shift. Our lab would lay on the floor and would knock shifter into neutral. So i put it back onto the column. My wife drove the wheels off that thing.
😆 🤣 😂
Dan she's making you work for her love. She wants to see if you're going to be there for her or just pass her along, so she's making you show her that you're trying to improve her life because someone left her for 25 years.
This shifter problem goes back to the late 40's. The fix is to remove the load off the drivetrain on a level surface. With the parking brake applied you grab the shift levers; you lift one up and push the other one down. It's why I put a floor shift conversion in my parents 50 Chevy back in 1965. The linkage was worn out.
Had the same problem with a 63 pickup with 3 on the tree. Had to open the hood, then manually adjust the linkage, would work for a while....
My parents had to do that with their 55also.
Had an old Rambler American with 3 on the tree. After it got worn the levers would lock up, and I would have to get out at a stoplight, open the hood, release the lever, the maybe it would work for a while. Ended up using some rubber from a a toilet valve as a new grommet and that worked for a long time.
Had a Nova with same problem. Had to put in third on a hill and drive home 400 kms.
I had one of these three on the tree on an old van. any time going1st to 2nd gear you had to go to 3rd then to 2nd. same going back to first from 2nd. you had to go to third then first. it was complicated but i drove that thing for years like that. probably 100k.
You know the old saying, if it has tit$ or tires, it’s gonna give you problems.
U ain't wrong!
@@DDSpeedShop pointing out the flaws ....ON A NOMAD THAT HERE IN THE STATES FROM THE AUCTION IS STILL 50K EASY!!!
MUST BE NICE🙄
That's Very True...
Less trouble from the ones with tires generally.
If it float, flies or F*cks, lease it
22:35 You better hope they don't invent time travel, because future Dan is going to go back in time and kick past Dan's @ss. hahahaha
One of these days
I think it would go more like, Dan here, DDspeed shop. Today we are going to travel back to 57' in my 55 nomad. but first we gotta....lol
Welcome to three on the tree. Brings back memories
Now that you have the two Nomads, side by side, you can compare the wiring to the taillights, reverse lights, etc... ;-)
Dear Dan: I just think the black Nomad would look so much better without the cartoon lettering all over it. Love what yer doin.
Agree 100%
I’d replicate the lettering from the black widow 57 on the Nomad. That would look way better.
Why ya all so boring?
Dan please get rid of that lettering. On the nomad that trip is over
Build your own no mad
Count your blessings. It's a Nomad and it's yours.
Gotta KNOW HOW to shift that 3 on the tree !! LOL ALWAYS move that shift handle UP towards REVERSE THEN back down to neutral THEN UP to second, Those old shift linkage bushings just wear out. Love the car though !
One thing that I appreciate about a good channel like this is the amount of content that he uploads, i always have something new here to watch and to me that makes an excellent channel like this one 😊
Can you film the inspection process
It isn't the shifter linkage it is the person shifting the shifter. What happens is when going from 1st to 2nd you are not fully disengaging the 1st gear before heading for 2nd and the shifter becomes disengaged from the 1st/rev shifter arm before aligning with the 2nd/3rd shifter arm hence stuck in 1st! I like this car and your build content.
yep i agree locked up a few 3 on the trees myself open the hood should be able to unlock without crawling under
My mom is 96 she would absolutely 💕 a ride in that ride. The stories . Love vids✌️👍
At 37:20 I know it appears everything went just DANdy lol. The BrightWork on that car is outstanding, both yours and it's. When I was 19 I had a 66 Chevelle with 283 3 spd my shifter linkage would do the same thing every now and then. I mastered how to crawl under and fix it.
yup its the shift linkage is in neutral and the transmission is in first the shift linkage has dropped into neutral all you have to do is pull the linkage to first and reverse up to neutral and your back in business the shift linage is worn out
cheers
I’ve been driving 3 on colum for many years. When shifting u have to go trough the gears or it will get stuck. When you went from 3rd to 1st is the problem. The bushings are wore. Run it trough the gears 123-321. Try it slow and smooth. Good luck. Love the show.
I will have to remember that with my 3 on the tree Fairlane Wagon
Had the same issue with a Chevy pickup that I drove for work. The owner said to shift up and down through all of the gears just like you said.
Add a floor shift or maybe a four speed auto ; then you both can drive it !!! As for the electrical problems; as my next door Cadillac Mechanic neighbor used to tell me - search and find, search and find !!! That Nomad is So Fine !!! Rave-On Danni & Dan !!!
Bobs1345 has it right. Had a 65 Elcamino did the same thing. The shift linkage on the firewall is worn out. I can’t remember how to push or pull on the linkages but just work on it and you’ll figure it out. Easy on the shifts.
With regard to chasing wiring oddities: I highly recommend the Power Probe IV. It saves a bunch of nonsense and is absolutely worth the money.
Nice car 🚗 👌 👍 👏 😎 😀 🚗
My Dad Bought a 55 chevy (new) and it was the same color as your Nomad! Well, When he got it home, he painted the house to match the car!
I never noticed the rattle til y'all mentioned it, NOW I hear it all the time.
Not a Macaro person, to be sure. Just, ALL THAT TLC & NO BURNOUT! This makes up for that. It's not 2laneblacktop nut DAMN. (had a 3tree & it was sooo finicky) it was mostly a worn column, but with some TLC & bushing & the proper cuss words I drove my prize for about 8 years... Outstanding guys!
Dan I hope you don’t need to Sell the Nomad she’s a Gem 👍👍 !! If you need more money sell the Cobra Kit car you can’t fit in it to drive and enjoy it. You won’t find many Nomads with all the extra’s she has 🤟✌️✌️
Awesome car
Good luck with getting some land, then you can build a nice big shop. I hope you don’t have to sell that car it is close to being a real gem.
lot of great work mate
always something... good job!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this video with us
Good morning from Cape Cod 🌞 I know future Dan already figured out how to fix the problem. I'm laid at looking at this video and I see you the next one's already up 😂 being 60 I've driven many free on the trees and each one was quirky in it's own way 😉 glad to see the two nomads have met 😂
I think I probably speak for a lot of us, this is once in a lifetime car for most of us. Please don’t sell it! Just keep on with her and enjoy! Love all your content and I hope to see much more on this one in the future! Greetings from Oklahoma!
I like the three on the tree.
Owned several when I was young, all we had.
So awesome! Two nomads! I’m so friggen jealous!
Thanks for the giggles, my 56 used to do the same thing with the shifting. ended up getting my first ticket thanks to the linkage locking up. when i let the clutch out they thought i was trying to drag race it. all i was trying to do is get out of traffic. most of the time i could get it pretty easily but had to stop to do it.
"two mad Nomads together, we got to let them get acquainted it's been a while they've never really met"... if they mate...you'll get an HHR
The nomad is looking great Dan and the paint color is one of my favorite colors 😊👍
Such a Beauty....with lots of very small problems.(no zip disc's and mig reqd.)
Dan and Dani I hope you can find away to keep both of your nomads their like money in the bank not going anywhere but up ether way enjoy them while you can Mike
I'm working at it
I'd love to see you buy an old warehouse somewhere. Get something that has cool character just like you Dannie and your builds.
Dan I thought when the column shifters car jammed up enough times a person just would naturally install a floor shifter but you could put a new column shifter in this is a nice car
Hey Dan&Dannie
I am sure you have figured it all out by now. Thanks for sharing.
Take care 😊
Thanks for the video.
shift levers are spread open on the column. line everything back up and bend the levers together with a pair of pliers.
Yes Sir!!!
Those three speed on the tree are disasters There is a way to adjust , Watched a you. Tube video on. Adjusting.
I have one in a 1970. GMC 1/2 ton.
I had a C20 shorty that was a real pain in the ass. Had a 327 in it, took about a year to figure out. New bushings, rods, whole 27 feet. Worked like butter after a while, just can't rush them.
Love you guys!
I hope you can get it up that you can shift gears with it. Keep up the great work.
but a car that nice buy the proper parts and repair it the right way not knobbled
This is one classy car you have there Dan. It has a headliner !
Keep The Nomad!!
Keep both!!
Yeah im thinking so
Yay @@DDSpeedShop
@DDSpeedShop this one is a keeper!! Unless someone comes with a wheelbarrow full of cash
My dad taught me to unlock the shifter for my mom on our 55 Chevy. I was 7. True story. And I had to do it quite a number of times. He traded it away when I was 8.
Pizza & beer yes😊 I have a old nova with three on the tree and it did the same thing, mine had bad plastic bushings. Don't know about nomads though, beautiful car.
It is, a once in a life time car Dan.
Those old cars do ride really good I remember driving my grandma's 54 6 cylinder 3 on the tree if was freaking awesome 100% all original it was on its 2nd set of tires the first set was starting to crack she won the car in 1954 my dad had to drive it home for her she was so excited she sold the car in 1985 or 86 with only 38000 miles on it it slept in the garage every night never was outside for more then 10 or 12 hours at a time ì loved the dash in that car the chrome went all the way across the ashtray was pretty slick you couldn't see it with the chrome trim it was hidden
Back when I was a young fella column shifters were very common. This was a common problem. We used to fix it with a worm drive hose clamp around the base of the steering column where the shift levers are. The column would stretch slightly and make those levers sloppy. The clamp would tighten it up again. Cheaper than a floor shifter conversion.
I can tell you really love this car. You should keep her.
In the eighties, high school, my buddy drove his grampa's 64 C10 and I never could get the jiggle wiggle flip to second. He tried to show me but to no avail.
Love the videos mate !! Hi from the UK. 🇬🇧
I own a 55 Poncho 261 inch 6, 3 on the tree and overdrive. Like a previous guy said easy to unlock from under the hood. It likely needs all new bushings in the linkage arms to trans. You can get these parts very inexpensive from Bay Ridge Chevy in Little Britain, Ontario. I have been dealing with John there for years, he is very knowledgeable on all old chevys and has tons of used and new parts in stock. Been a.viewer for 3 or 4 yrs now. Keep up the chevy.builds.
You guys should head to the Moncton nationals this summer if at all possible!
The centering part of the linkage gets worn and will allow it to not quite come from one gear to the next because its still in first gear, meaning if you forced it into another gear as well as first being stuck.... real problems then. With tires blocked and someone holding the clutch pedal in, move the linkage in the transmission to neutral. You probably will find it easier to take one of the shift rods off of either the top or bottom, your choice but I did it from the top to line up the two linkages where they belong. There is where you will find that slack is causing this issue. You will find the selector on the shifter is usually worn and allowing it to not shift right so it stays in first and you have already moved the selector into the place that makes it hung up at. I have been lucky and held it up on the shifter will rolling and try and find where it will go back all the way to first again and retry shifting. If your not going to fix it right, you have to shift it like your headed for reverse instead of second so it comes completely out of first and then it will drop down on the linkage right and allow you to find second easy enough
Had me a 55 with a 6 cylinder and a 3 speed on the floor.
That probably is a once in a live time car! I think it has everything you could order on it, it’s really nice!
Yeah. Its a special car that's for sure
The NewMadd BlueMadd is worth whatever problems you have to fix. Nothin' good comes easy 💙
The Nomad would be really sweet with your Super T-10 4 speed trans in it. You could use the tri-five shifter from the Nova.
The blue 55 Nomad is really a nice ride, for sure. Definitely worth some Canadian cash. Hopefully, future Dan will make whatever decision makes the most sense for you both. Cheers!! 😎
Lol To new adventures.🍕 You guys make a nice couple. Dig the show👍
Dan maybe some por-15 on the rear frame to make it look as nice as the car looks 👍🏻
You'll regret selling this gem...keep it, your Nova, a car for Danni and slash the rest...or...talk Mur into buying it, then borrow it like tools.
Dan I hope you can keep this one it’s such a nice car. Only way I would sell it if someone offered me a ridiculous amount of money for it were you made a fortune off it. Keep up the great work. 👍😎✌️
That is one nice looking Nomad.
Disaster-ish haha I felt that one. Had a few disaster-ish days lately as well.
Hmmm, parking brake I hope is on when you are under the car monkeying with the gear shift....
You must live in a safe neighborhood. Taking off for a cruise and not closing the garage door. Guess things in Canadia are different than here in the states. Sweet car. Electrical stuff is frustrating!
I really like the colour combination on the car. It's a keeper along with the Chevy II, the Nova, the tow truck and the square body Ford.
I'd like to keep em all haha
I had the same gear shift linkage problem and had to rebuild it with new bushings.
The sasquatch built No Mad runs better than the creampuff No Mad. Now I'm starting to see the sasquatch's point of view on why nightmares are better than dreampuffs.
Keep the Nomads they are rare as hens teeth and worth a small oil field. The wires are nearly 70 years old. Replace them! This is a beautiful car even if it needs some TLC. It's worth fixing
Loving the nomad videos and seeing both of them together! Might be time for a 4 speed conversion or 350 turbo. Later Buddy 👍
I love that Soomad sooomuch👍
I still love the new-madd.
Tough day, but its hard to feel too bad for you when you have two nomads sitting next to each other in your driveway…lol.
Keep em both…they look cool together.
I feel your pain! I once drove my old 67 F100 27 miles stuck in 1st gear. You definitely get strange looks cruising the shoulder of the road 😂😂
replace all the shifter linkage bushings and spend some time adjusting the linkages and it should work very good. i just sold mty59 el Camino with a three on the tree. i had it for 20 years and i replaced all the linkage bushings and i had to make the one for the linkage attached to the frame from copper tubing. i adjusted the shifter linkages so you could push it from first towards the windshield into second every time without ever getting stuck in first. it had the original style 3 spd trans in it .
I put new control arm bushings upper and lower 2 years ago in my 57 handymay wagon ,they went totally bad in 15,500 miles.
My old 55,the column bushings got so worn and it would get stuck in one gear.I found out it happened on the 1-2 shift, but if I went from 1st and buzzed reverse, then stuck it 2nd,it worked fine!...lol 😂
Haha yikes!
Always carry a tire iron with you to un jam the linkage on the Column
I like the original hubcaps
My first 57 2 door post was the same colors. Wish I had kept it. I had a 390 horse 427 Rat and Muncie 4 speed and 3:55 posi rear.
Don't forget the front bumper bolt, I want it all good when it's sitting in its new driveway in New York!!!!
One side of gen light wire goes to ign...other goes to output of alt...when running it's 12v on both sides so light goes out.
The shift levers need adjusting and maybe new bushings.
We had a gmc pickup work truck with 3on the tree. That ole beast got driven hard by a different guy every day. We kept a weld slag chipping hammer under the hood to whack the 3onthetree linkage daily. We hated that truck with a passion.
LOL as someone who has been driving a unrestored 55 chevy hard top with 3 on the tree for the last 30 years... I can tell when the linkage has stuck... had that exact issue before.. LOL luckily I can fix it in a hurry at a stop light but have to pop the hood... ie FUN...
Haha just gotta b quick
@@DDSpeedShop and have hood springs
I remember my mom having to get out of the 70 Nova to unstick the shift rods under the hood. It was a common problem with 3 on the tree chevys.
You rely on future dan HEAVILY! LOL i think he needs a raise!
Love the whine in those old transmissions,
Needs baby moon caps and put that front hood chrome on its golden
LOL, flash back to my '68 C10, 3 on tree issues...
That thing is cool I hope you take cruise or hit power tour with it if your going, but now Puddin says that's his color lol. Where's the 55 Gasser gray one I hope u bring back out show more of it down and dirty Hot Rod!
