Alvarez is wrong about Storm. She was doing her gimmick during the match. Her dramatic facial expressions and chatter to her opponent. Thunder Rosa isn’t over and thinks she’s better than what she is. Storm is their best in ring worker. Mercedes will be good for putting a match together. Storm and Mercedes at Wembley for the title should be the match to watch.
I remember when I heard Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat was the best match ever I felt like I had to see it... Now there are so many 5, 6, 7 star matches I'm not in any rush to watch it...
This reputation of this website is on life support because of the lack of breath due to sucking the “Richard” of AEW so long and hard.
I think some people aren't realizing how big having matches like this in a person's library will be for a wrestler's career. As the industry evolves and the level of accessibility grows, I can see the culture of people watching individual matches becoming much more mainstream as a match that lasts 15, 20, 30 minutes can be one of the most entertaining things to consume within that time frame.
People thinking that a lack of story for this match will affect how its perceive, aren't taking into account, that years from now, I can tell people to look up this match and most people will find it to be an exciting and engaging 30 minutes that will make you ser more of their work.
Plus there was story within and coming after the match with the kayfabe neck injury, and Callis' commentary during the match about Ospreay that teases a potential break up from the Callis family to complete the heel turn

It was the best wrestling match I've ever seen
I also like Macho vs Jake Roberts house show match I watch in person at the Tacoma Dome - Seattle, WA area. Macho took off his wrist tape to choke Roberts and Roberts took it and tied him to the bottom rope and smashed with a chair when Liz was distracting the referee saying Jake’s cheating. One of the only times I got lower seats in the chairs close to the ring. Such a great memory as a kid. I was probably 8-10 years old, now 48.
I think promos, the story leading up to the match, the crowd, the commentary, and then the in ring and result all lead to whats considered a "5 star match" HBK/Taker 1 had all that. Ospreay/Danielson IMO was perfection in ring, amazing crowd but lacked the promos and long term build to be considered a historically significant match like HBK/Taker 1 did
According to the wiki Dave has given AEW matches 5*'s or more 29 times in the last five years.
Anyone find it odd that we're comparing this AEW match against decades old WWE matches that couldn't even reach 5*'s? Then again this is Dave...its possible Bryan feels those two WWE matches are superior to everything AEW has done up till now.

AEW produces matches that appeal to Meltzer's tastes. Tastes which have been informed from watching much more pro wrestling over the years than most of the people complaining about his match ratings. As with any critics, a lot of people with different tastes (INCLUDING other critics) may disagree.
Again, a critic who favors old school shoot style (Maeda's UWF) will likely hate this match. Guys running the ropes, jumping and putting on holds that should end any fight yet get sold for more than 10 seconds. No, matches should be like MMA or else.
And one who prefers 80's style plodding clubbing blows and pantomimes will also hate it. The guys look too chiseled, too polished. Might remind them of how the Road Warriors ushered the end of the "bar brawler" style. And there wasn't enough jawing with the old ladies in the front row and guys running in and out and around the ring to avoid contact. And where's the blood? No crimson mask? The Bruiser wouldn't approve.

There are people out there performing music or producing movies that won't make money. Should we go to them and say "Look, Taylor Swift makes money. Beyoncé makes money. Be like them instead of trying to be all alternative and artsy. And Marvel movies are big. Try doing something like that you art school dork!"
@@horgh_japan I think just having unpredictable results regardless the style is what most people want. It doesn't mean it has to always be a back and forth slobber knocker... Even Ali was KOed early in fights and Tyson lost to Buster Douglas.
Maybe book a television match like Ramon vs 123 kid just 5% more often... Or CM Punk losing to Moxley real fast... Just more variety and outcomes to keep people guessing

I have seen Ospreay's big matches from the past couple years and he gets better with every one, and him paired with who many call the best of all time Danielson elevated this to something I have never seen before. Must watch
This match to me is the indie, iwc, japan strong style version of the The Rock vs Hogan. Or maybe Michael’s vs Jericho would be a better comparison but non the less,Osprey grew up watching/idolizing Bryan like Rock with Hogan. Osprey is the new more updated version like Rock was to Hogan. Now best match in American soil? If you mean just pure bell to bell, this is awesome, fight forever, technical wrestling match, probably yes. It would be hard to
find one better. A few come to mind that could MAYBE compete. If you’re talking story, significance, star power and money making then no it’s not. NOW that’s not down playing technical wrestling because that’s a very important part of wrestling BUT so is story, drawing power and making money. Which is probably the most important, because it’s what keeps people invested and the business going. But in the end it’s all subjective and we can all like what we like.

Which we all agree is ridiculous. However from Dave Meltzers point of view he watches so many different styles of wrestling. I can see why WWE matches seem less than now days. WWE has never produced a match anywhere near the level that Bryan Danielson and Will Ospreay presented last night. Its just not the way that WWE does things and that is ok. Its not to say WWE produced matches cant be great. We all know they can. But bell to bell move to move AEW presents way more advanced techniques in its matches.

One slept on match that should be considered is the Punk vs Hero Ladder Match in IWA Mid South in 2001. Those two went all out in front of 250 people in a condemned building in the middle of Kentucky. Absolute magic.
I don't wanna say the best ever, 'cuz that covers a lot of ground. However, as far as a match on PPV as a first time encounter between two of the best in the business on US soil, I would be very hard-pressed to name a better one than Ospreay/Danielson.

It's the most subjective argument in a sport that's scripted, and being that it is, what exactly was the buildup but being "this match is going to be the greatest"? I'm sure it would actually matter if they promoted the match for longer and for an end payoff that meant something.
If you ask me, Joe and Todd could have a banger at a gymnasium, and I'd watch, and say, "Wow, those two really went all out and put on a great match"; or, Joe and Todd could put on the exact same match, in front of 50,000, to crown the next World Champion, and I'd say "Wow, that was one of the greatest matches ever".
It's scripted, and the overall presentation, from build-up, hype, rivalry, to the match itself and the payoff when it's all over, it all matters and when it all comes together not only will it not be an argument, but it will draw thousands of fans, millions watching across screens, and draw millions of dollars.
The build-up is seeing two of the greatest wrestlers of our generation face-off. It's similar to the selling point of the 1995 film Heat. The appeal of Heat was seeing Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, two of the greatest actors of their time, finally share the screen with one another (they were both in The Godfather 2, but had no scenes with one another.) Sometimes you don't need more than that.

Instead it's just, "here you go, best wrestler vs best wrestler in the 3rd to last match in front of 7000 people" ... And to promote we'll show CM Punk brawl 8 months ago and have Osprey create headlines talking about HHH weeks prior.
A lot of people don't seem to clock that professional pride is a real stake. For a lot of people, it's the HIGHEST stake.

I enjoyed the match, but i think it's being blown wayyyy out of proportion of just how good it was. This is angle vs mysterio in SS 02 with more time which isnt a bad thing or jericho vs michaels at any time. Again not a bad thing. Steller match, but i dont see this match doing anything to change the industry, which for me personally is a requirement for it being a contender to be the greatest of all time.
Totally fine if people have other opinions on it, just personally dont think its quite what its hyped to be.

Best match ever for the month of April 2024, sure. I could list off dozens of matches over the last few decades that I liked better, though. I'm not even sure that this will be MOTY for 2024 because we still have lots of them coming up.

IMO, Danielson WANTS this to be his retirement. what better way to "go out." it only makes it that much better when he comes back "out of retirement" for the rematch.
- Ospreay cut a promo about a month ago telling Danielson about how dangerous the tiger driver / storm driver is and that he was going to end him.
- Hits him with tiger driver and is celebrating facing the crowd, not seeing the ref call for the doctor spot, lines up and hits hidden blade, 1,2,3.
- Ospreay is clearly concerned and upset for what he's done shown post match in-ring hovering over Danielson.
- Ospreay in media scrum claims he is retiring tiger driver/ storm driver as it is too dangerous.
-This leaves you in a place where years down the road when Ospreay goes heel and has to bust out the tiger driver to put someone away it will be an ultra devastating moment.
opinions are opinions, this injury angle was two-fold, about Danielson's "retirement" and Ospreays dangerous weapon stormdriver being "locked away"
- Where it leaves us next, imo clearly Mox takes offense to what Ospreay did to his bestie, leading to Mox vs Ospreay at Double or Nothing. IWGP title on the line maybe im not sure, Mox fancies himself the ace of AEW, Ospreay just called himself the new ace last week, ace vs ace.
- Ospreay vs Mox has been teased rather recently in their 3-way match up this year at Wrestle Kingdom with David Finley.

Some people will just never accept that Japanese born style wrestling is a part of American wrestling culture now and has been for years since AEW really has come into existence. AEW was the first product that airs regularly that has featured match styles that were born in Japan. If you think about it it is no different than when Eric Bischoff was the first to feature Lucha Libre to the American audience. Yes I know ECW and Paul Heyman were technically first but they didnt have a budget. I didnt see the same hesitation to accept that. I dont understand why you so called fans of pro wrestling just cant accept that Japanese styles of wrestling is awesome.

@@gohan7389 I absolutely agree that AEW needs to do a million times better when it comes to building to matches. Storylines are their biggest weakness as a promotion. Most of them are absolutely god awful. I concede that. But in the meantime I know bell to bell whether a match is random or not. Most matches are going to be good to great. You cant say they just have nothing but random matches. That is absolutely false. The storylines however have been very miss for a while now. Not every match needs a story. Does every match in WWE have a story. No they dont. Being able to put forth good to great matches is a more than acceptable failsafe to fall back on. You could be WCW have terrible storylines and absolute drizzling sh*t matches on top of it. That is why even though overall interest has been down. This is not a case that the shows are bad. Its just they dont do a very good job drawing fans in with their storylines. If you do tune in though and want to see good wrestling matches AEW at the very least is guaranteed to have it.

Michaels/Taker wasn’t perfect either, Taker almost fucking died. Ironically, Ospreay/Danielson is the safer match out of the two.

It's apparent that you don't understand this, but normal people don't listen to podcasts to figure out how to feel about wrestling. It was a great match but jeez, take these guys meats out your mouths. It wasn’t the greatest wrestling match ever in America like the marks would have you believe, and it wasn’t even close. It was a spot fest of really hard elbows, and ended with a botch that caused an injury. I can list a TON of matches that were unbiasedly better in both AEW and WWE from the last 25 years. Shit, Swerve vs Nick Wayne 1 at Defy was better than this and that was aired on CZcams. The allure of Will being the 5 star wrestler who never has a bad match needs to wear off so he can actually learn how to professionally work a match and become a real top star instead of this backyard wrestling shit that constantly gets people hurt and ceases to live on in our minds for more than 2 weeks. This match was just two guys that wanted to wrestle each other, getting to wrestle each other. Nothing historic happened here and our lives would’ve been the same with or without this match.

I liked the match but BEST EVER ON US SOIL???? Rey vs eddie 97, Joe vs daniels vs styles? Joe vs kobashi? Angle Vs Lesnar? Bret vs owen? Like come on this mad had no stakes and was a great exhibition but it was not a top 5 for me.
Angle vs Benoit Best of 3. An hr of two of the best technical wrestlers beating the crap out of each other. And the first 2 matches didn't even make it to ten mins total.

I'll take Taker vs Mankind or Brett vs HBK because of the build, and the aftermath, over an indie dream match. I'm 49 years old, i've seen all high spots 1000's of times. Come Monday, no one is talking about it around the water cooler at work.

1. Unintentionally hilarious comparison because the Bret-Shawn Iron Man match at Wrestlemania had no build-up other than, "Come see two great wrestlers square off", which is pretty much the same build-up as Danielson-Ospreay.
2. No one cares about where you work or what your boring co-workers talk about at the watercooler.
Nobody was talking about Bret and HBK either! There were people walking out of the building with 10 minutes left in the match!

Not even close. Pretty sure Philadelphia is in US soil. WrestleMania 40 Roman vs. Cody was a way better match. WM25 was in the US. WM21 was in Los Angeles which I am pretty sure is also located in the US.
Back in the heydays of television-based movie reviewers, Siskel & Ebert were kings. Their opinions on movies were taken as the definitive take on a movie's value... or they were just pompous buffoons who never "made it" and so just rag on whatever's hot. Or so did a lot of comedy shows seem to tell us.
Slamming Siskel & Ebert was a common thing at the height of their popularity, but thing is by art cinema enthusiast standards they were pretty much populists. They regularly enjoyed movies that would have cinema professors and art magazine critics rolling their eyes. They enjoyed more "accessible" art cinema and didn't like anything too subtle or out of their comfort zones, hence why they had a TV show.
But at the end of the day, both men watched more cinema than the people who mocked them for not liking the latest slasher movie, muscle guy action flick, or being annoyed at some "lazy, low brow" comedy. They watched a LOT of "popular" cinema aimed for mass consumption and formed an opinion based on what they had witnessed through the years along with preferences and values shaped by their upbringing and ideas on good taste passed down to them by their mentors. Sometimes, their criticism contradicted previous criticism or they gave a movie a pass when a similar work did not just a scant few years ago. Some people got very heated over those two.
Meltzer is the Siskel & Ebert of pro wrestling. A person whose opinion is based on having watched a considerable amount of content and then further shaped by a host of personal preferences that may change with time and lead to contradictions.
Can’t call a match with a dangerous botch the greatest match in US history . The point of wrestling is to make it look legit without injury .

Bryan knows his opinion is subjective right? He just says things and acts like they’re fact because he’s saying it. This is why people get annoyed at this coverage. It was awesome but not every awesome match needs some hyperbolic declaration that you insist everyone else prescribe to.

So many are calling this AEW payroll nonsense but the fact is that Bryan himself has said that a good competition between 2 wrestling companies is good for his own business. He is just doing an impersonation of an ESPN talking head these days, saying dumb things to provoke emotional responses and generate views. There is no reason for them not to do it as long as people line up and eat the slop. I'm not going to even name specifics but if I'm sure everyone can look at the great matches (even with an only-in-the-U.S.A. geography restriction) of Wrestlers like Shawn Michaels, Okada, Jay White, Johnny Gargano, Adam Cole, CM Punk. Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Kurt Angle, Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles, Moxley, Rollins, Reigns, Anyone from Damage CTRL, etc. and know he is just baiting. Some of those wrestlers I just listed I actually hate, but I know lots of others praise their matches highly. But yeah a title-less match that is maybe not either man's best match in even the last 12 months is the best wrestling match since 1776. Smh my head at this Abraham Lincoln erasure.

Hey, i think Danielson/Ospreay is NOT the best match. Not enough Rest Holds. To many gymnastics. Match should've finished with a Snapmare, drop toehold or a Drop Kick. Just finished the match and it was amazing. I’d say Oz could’ve sold more…? Maybe that’s just his character? It was kind of annoying though. I don’t watch AEW enough but it was a great match.
