Barrett .50 Caliber Overview (M107 and M82 A1)

  • The Barrett .50 caliber anti-material rifles (NOT sniper rifles) are truly icons in the firearm world. These man portable cannon allow an individual to have 10 rounds of earth-shattering .50 BMG ammunition on tap to destroy enemy equipment, vehicles, and so on. With too many movie and video game appearances to count, the Barrett .50s certainly get lots of due attention from the public. But what are these rifles really used for? How do they work? What's in the box? Well, let's have a look!

      Wrong, it was not developed as a long range rifle, it was developed as an anti personal rifle shooting targets like cars, airplanes, helicopters, communication equipment and so forth. There are better more accurate tools to snipe at long distance.

      You can get cheap ammo, but whats the point in that. It just hurts the gun. I use a good round at $89 for 10 rounds, yes pricey, but accuracy is important when you can really place a round with ridiculous impact. Im getting the 107 and would have complimented my M99-a1 from Barrett, if it had not been taken from me along with many other guns from a stupid wife with a 911 trigger happy finger calls the popo and says your crazy. I lost $125k in guns and initially a very serious charge later on that was very expensive to get aquitted. Now gunless, headed back to Arizona for good, and picking up my 107 shortly there after. The guy is right about the gun. Its a must have for any one who appreciates firepower. Its so much fun to pull out at a range, and squeeze a round out to have everyone stop and look. Thats worth the price of admission all damn day long!

    The M107a1 is capable of MOA accuracy with match grade ammo. Improvements include: match barrel and chamber, barrel bushing, straighter and lighter aluminum upper, better trigger, better muzzle brake. I have have a lot of time with the m82, m82 cq and the M107a1. The M107a1 is a sniper level weapon with good ammo.

    If I had the money, I honestly don't know which I'd get: one of these, an Accuracy International AS50, or a CheyTac M200 (in obligitory .408 CT, of course). I love the .50s for obvious reasons, but the CheyTac is such an amazing weapon that defines the word "precision;" more impact force at 1000 yards than a .50 BMG, supersonic at 2000 yards, and if I recall correctly, sub MOA accuracy at 2000 yards as well (where the hell they tested that, I don't know).

    Couldn't agree with you more! I rented an M82A1 with a friend on the first day of the year and found it to be just like a 12 ga magnum shell with a very long push. Definite one of the guns to shoot before you die but definitely one of the guns that are not as awesome as you think. Still badass though!

    I saw a recent interview with Mr. Barrett where he stated he didn't make the rifle for military use but for recreational civilian use. He didn't know of anyone making something in 50 BMG for that purpose so he made his own. The fact that the military thought they were useful and bought a bunch he took as a happy coincidence that ensured his gun would make him rich.

    • @TheBamidd
      @TheBamidd Před 8 lety

      So was an M2 heavy machine gun, that doesn't make it a sniper rifle, that just means that the end user decided to use it for that purpose, it does not change the intended use of the firearm.

    • @Cornerala
      @Cornerala Před 8 lety

      its just that he didnt mention it. all he said was is that what videogames and movies have us believe

    • @TheBamidd
      @TheBamidd Před 8 lety +1

      +Ala-eddine el ouazzani He did mention it. Mentioned using the anti-material capabilities to shoot a canteen or a zipper off a combatant, ergo shooting a soft target. However, a Barrett semi-automatic rifle is not a sniper rifle or precision rifle at all, it wasn't designed with that accuracy potential in mind. Look at a Barrett M95 or M99 for accuracy potential, with their fixed barrel design and tighter bolt lockup. I believe an M95 still holds the record for tightest group at 1000yds in .50BMG

    • @Cornerala
      @Cornerala Před 8 lety

      but what i mean was mentioning it as an actual sniper rifle to kill infantry at long distances which it was used for allot of times. the .50 was favoured over a standard 308 because of its longer range capabilities

    • @TheBamidd
      @TheBamidd Před 8 lety

      +Ala-eddine el ouazzani Maybe in a few rare instances though I would never say it was "favored" over the 308. A precision rifle in 308 would be capable of better hit probability out to distances of 1100-1200yds while maintaining a lighter weight and recoil impulse and a much quieter report. Heck the US military even has several precision rifles adopted in .300 WM for the times when 308 isn't enough, and in more modern times .338 Lapua Magnum is the more or less go to for extreme range precision rifles. The only time anyone "favors" a semi-automatic Barrett, or really any .50 BMG or other large caliber anti-material rifle, is in use against hardened targets or material destruction. Now, again, have shots been made at extreme ranges with the semi-automatic Barrett rifles? Absolutely. But much more commonly if a shot is made at that type of extreme distance it's of bolt action design, such as the Accuracy International .50 BMG rifles, Barrett M95/99 series, Steyr HS50, and many others.

  • @jamal69jackson77
    @jamal69jackson77 Před 5 lety

    I love the introduction you gave on this video about the Barrett 50 Cal rifle. It is so true... There is nothing practical about owning of one these rifles outside of the military. They are far more costly than just about any other high power rifle on the market... In fact, you could buy about 6 to 8 top notch rifles of one variety or another for the cost of just one Barrett M82A1 or M107A1, Barrets cost about the same as the price of a new motorcycle, they are a burden to carry around, shooting ammunition out of them can be like trying to warm your house in winter by burning dollar bills in the chimney, they require equally expensive optics if you plan to tap on the into their intended potential and you need a BIG plot of land to shoot on if you actually intend to reach that potential. So all in all, Barrett 50 Cal rifles are almost absurd to own, but boy are they fun to shoot and boy do they get all your other shooting buddies jealous. Lastly, nothing else commonly acquired makes a hole on a target like a 50 Cal... Not 408 CheyTac, not 338 Lapua, not 300 RUM, not 300 WSM and certainly not anything less than these last few.

    The M107A1s I work on have carrying handles paired with arrow head compensators. They work better by expelling gases out to the rear towards the operator thus going against the recoil produced by the rifle. I have never worked with the other compensator. Also the arrow heads just screw off the barrel like any other compensator. I’d double check the source this guy uses. 2111 ground ordnance small arms repair USMC
