- Here it is, my honest review of the new Moza Slypod Pro slider jib monopod. It is an amazing piece of hardware but with one massive flaw... the software. Check out how I set it up and run through the options to use this.

I realise the verdict was focused a bit too much on the linkage control and not enough on the slypod alone, but I do think a majority of users will want to pair this with a gimbal and not just use it as a standalone slider. Tell me if I'm wrong! ⬇⬇⬇
That's the 'nirvana' position certainly... however, the new Slypod Pro being so quiet at the sort of speed I'd want for an interview setup (back and forth looping) is very good news. A great tool for B-roll where the volume makes no difference means, on it's own, it's seems a good buy. BUT, being ransomed on waiting for an app to drop is a tough gamble though... do i, don't i.
@@timrober75 True! And also bear in mind the noise you could hear.. was about 1 foot away from a shotgun mic pointing down lol
We are optimizing the multi-axis linkage control, will improve it thru future firmware upgrade.
Yes, I think the increased length and the quiet (whilst going slow) operation is what a lot of folk are looking for. The the linking with air cross 2 is a ‘fabled’ and hoped for myth still at present. But I wouldn’t be in the market for a gimbal fir any reason other than the programmable / repeatable / robotic combination moves. Thanks for what you do sir :)
@@GudsenMOZA Thank you for your reply. It’s important that you make this a priority before your current Kickstarter closes. Many of us have been waiting for more than a year for the app to deliver the functionality MOZA promised. I’ve exchanged many emails about getting even basic linkage functions to be reliable enough to use professionally, and this is the first I’ve heard of app development being done. It’s difficult for me to invest further in MOZA when my original gear still doesn’t do as you promised. Thank you for making this a priority.
Thanks for those upclose macro shots at the 12 minute spot. Buying this now because of your review as I work mainly creating corporate product videos. Much appreciated.
Great to hear! Personally I think it's a brilliant product concept with a flawed control system but if you're able to do most of your movements using the onboard buttons it's brilliant
Finally a person who does an honest review
That's a brilliant honest review!!
Great review, indeed. Shows in a very impressive way that SW is everything for that kind of devices, especially when connecting functionalities across devices.
David, monstrous thanks for excellence and extremely helpful and informative vid for this kid! Happy subscriber here. 💛🙏🏼
Awesome! Thank you!
Super helpful review before clicking checkout button!!! Thx!!!
Thanks for the informative review. Curious about the quiet mode...
Got it, it's not connecting to the app with any phone I have android and ios ...
when i charge the slypod, it's supposed to turn blue after 4 hours ... it's still red after 11 hrs ...
the unit i received was missing the thread to attach the camera to the monopod head...
WTF ..???
What do you think about this mess ?
Sounds like you were sent a bad pre-production unit. With a channel your size I'm surprised they didn't send another out immediately. Did you tell them about these issues? Mine worked fine before even doing any firmware updates.
@@dodmedia Not only I told them but since that they don't answer back ... So I have a nice lamp stand for now.
@@MathieuStern haha
Great video. Thanks
ps: By the way, I don't think you focused too much on Linkage Control in your conclusion. That was a point (to be exact: the only point) that you rightly criticized. Otherwise, the slider is fantastic and Moza would do well to fix this one flaw quickly - because this slider is just awesome!
Hello David.
This video about the Moza Slypod Pro here and today was my first visit to your channel. But I'll be sure to check back often because I like the way you presented this slider. Good information. Unagitated (I mean that positively of course!) and factual - that's how I like it. I feel well informed and gladly leave a subscription. See you again soon...
Best regards from Germany.
Michael
Thanks Micheal!
oh man... i'm new to video, shot stills casually w a DSLR for years, now trying to learn how to implement vid into my biz, and this seems like it'd be a cheap way to give me some motion ability, allow me to learn and gimme some added functionality as a 99% solo shooter, bc it seems like it's $250 now. I pulled the trigger, can return it if I don't like it, I actually have yet to buy a gimbal and think i'd prob go w the RS3 from what I've seen but I'm hoping I'll be happy, and the greatly reduced price isn't an omen.
great vids, so often it's so difficult to discern ppl's integrity w/r/t product reviews, really appreciate it!
Great review did that app get sorted
Great review mate. May I ask what brand and model the pair of small tripods are that you're using?
Yup. Ive had the original Slypod for a while and have used it on "pro" shoots. Many times the App will not work and found rebooting the app will fix the issue but simply not reliable enough. Also a couple of other points i find while using on shoots - The +- control button is not ideal for those use quick under pressure action shots, as many times its guess work - A actual turnable dial would be better and easier to set for repeat precise shots where prefer not to use the app. Also the on off light is very hard to see outside in sunlight.
Other thing with all these app controlled devices is when you're on a "pro" shoot there are plenty of other pieces of kit that also require control via an App - when I'm shooting i can count at least 4. So the more control I can have without the App the better.
But this thing has so much potential if they can just get the interface to work better.
Thanks for the review. This is an intriguing product that would be easy to haul, and serve some useful functions. Glad to see the Pro version improvements over the original.
Q: Do you know if there is a shutter release cable that connects the Slypod with Panasonic GH5 and/or S1H cameras for time lapse work? I see cables for other cameras at retailer sites, but none for Panasonic cameras.
A couple issues I have with this product are the manual speed control and the inadequate 1/4"-20 threaded hole at the end:
The speed control range would work better for me starting slow, with faster increments as I continue to press the button. Like you, I tend to prefer slider moves at slow speeds. I do not being reliant on apps to work, as they can be cumbersome, fail, or conflict with other apps already in use.
Why companies still use a 1/4"-20 threaded hole at the end of a product like this amazes me. It is simply too small a point of contact to trust this product, especially when fully extended. Why not use a 3/8"-16 threaded screw and adapt it if necessary. I have seen a couple videos of gimbals falling off extension poles where the 1/4"-20 screw broke. It's just a disaster waiting to happen.
COMPLETELY agree! 3/8 makes me far more comfortable for anything rig related to be honest lol
David, thanks for the video - just a great one. I was wondering - after a year gone since the video was published - do you have any updates on the bad app situation? I was searching for Moza on your channel but didn't see any newer Videos - having an update would be great. The Slypod is exactly what I wanna use and already ordered but it would be a ton better if I could comfortably use it with a gimbal. Having an at least mostly reliable software for that would be something I'd expect.
Yes I have! I've been using it around the studio with the Moza Aircross 3 and they work well together. The app is unfortunately still a pain in the ass to use in terms of having to dive in and out of different menus to get everything working together, however I've not had any crashes like I had in this video, so far!
@@dodmedia
For me it's the constant disconnects that require a restart of the app and every disconnect stops the pod movement when doing my time lapse.
is the app fixed? thanks
What kind of little tripods are those at the begging of the video?? I can’t find them anywhere
i like this product but I'm not sure if it will handle blackmagic 6k with sigma 18-35 mm and Ronin rs2 , total setup 3.2 Kg without shaking especial when it extends when it reach its maximum horizontal length
so, same old same old. They make good kit but can't quite get over the line with the software. I have three pieces of Gudsen kit and it is pretty much the same all around. Thier customer service is shocking too. Shame really, wouldn't it be lovely if it all just worked !!! Thank David for your tenacity and getting this very helpful review out into the world.
@dodmedia Thanks for this review! Since you released the video,do you know if Moza did any imprevement on the software? Can I use a DJI gimbal with it, or then it needs 2 software?
I've no clue to be honest! I've not seen anything that suggests there's cross platform linkage since DJI is one of Mozas biggest competition.
If you have the Rhino II Arc would there be any good reason to get this (already having the Aircross II Gimble) ?
Also, I bought into the Nikon Z6 and no one (other than Atomos Ninja) has bought into that “game changing” (😅) alternative (if Apple FCPX ever comes up with a profile for that ProRes RAW instead of having to use Sony’s CIN to match the Z6’s video chip) 🧐
Hi mate! Are you using an iPhone for this app? With my Samsung Note I can't use it for full vertical hight.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Question: For speed, is there an option for it to start at the slowest settings instead of starting off fast then slowing down?
In the app you can start it at whatever speed you want, with far more flexibility and control.
Great stuff, if you do not have a table to place this on, can you use a tripod in combination with a light stand or another tripod?
oh of course. I'd suggest a tripod over the table to be honest, I was just using the review bench here as it's already set up
Thank you, you lifesaver. I am about to buy this combination. But that is a little too unreliable for me with the many attempts.
maybe a solution would be to use the slypod with a ronin rsc2 and configure both in their respective applications.
For assistance in
if it has problems or defects? maybe it would be better to wait for it to come out on amazon!
According to the photo of the Slypod pro on your Moza app you have the panhead and camera mounted on the wrong end of the Slypod pro. I know this sounds incorrect but the photos from Moza show the camera mounted on the end of the Slypod pro where the power button is. Also your Slypod pro seems to have some kind of seal where the smaller extension tube comes out, mine does not have that seal and there is a large amount of wobble on mine when doing verticle movements. I now see the issue with mine, there is a seal and it is popping out of the small extension tube. It slipped through the quality control check at the Moza plant.
They publish products on their website and never update it. I bought the ifocus with the remote control and the rendered image still appears on your website. It doesn't look like the final product.
I like this device, but it is still not available in my country.
And those apps of consumer motion control systems are a pain to me. At least my Weebill S is not usable with the app.
So I'm working on a solution building my own slider with integrated UI and bluetooth control for any gimbal.
I try to make the interface as easy as possible and useful without an app. Any advices what would be nice for such a system is appreciated.
I'm curious what you disliked so much about the original. I really wanted to pick this up to use with my Aircross 2 and BMPCC4K, but the reduced payload limit kills that idea. I was thinking about settling for either the original or the E, but it seems you had a bad experience with the original.
The payload on this hasn't been an issue so I'd not worry too much about that. The thing I found disappointing with the original was just the maximum extension distance.
Any use if i using zhiyun gimbal?
Is the app working properly now?
is the app fixed now?
The slower speed setting seems pretty quiet. Would it be quiet enough to use during interviews? Will the app allow the Sly Pod to loop between two points?
I'd say it would be quiet enough. The issue now is that the app crashes every time I try to connect the Slypod :-|
Has the app been improved since this video was posted?
Thank you for the through review. It's now six months later. Any updates on the progress of app development?
Bump!
As of right now the Android version of the app crashes the moment I try to connect to the slypod. I'll try the iOS app tomorrow. Honestly it's exactly what I talked about in the review, the apps just not solid, and I don't get why it isn't. It's not rocket science. They're dealing with a very small number of variables here.
I would be very interested to know if the newer aircross 3 has better integration / linkage control with the slypod.
Was the iOS app any better?
Whalen can you purchase this I want it
Has the app been fixed by now?
What make are the tabletop tripods you have? Thanks!
Thanks so much for this video!
What are the short tripods that you have under the Sly Pod?
One is from the iFootage monopod, and one is from a cheap monopod I picked up specifically because of the foot, but they're discontinued now
Mine just arrived. Did you ever get Moza to work with you on the software? I've been trying to figure ways around it.....You're right. Hardware awesome. Software. Lame.
did they updated the app?
will be great to know :)
lv it . which slider will u suggest me for beginner subscribed m guna be ur fan
The cheapest motorized slider I'd recommend is the 80QD by GVM. I reviewed it a few years ago. It's fantastic for the price.
Can you put the dji rs2 on it
Absolutely! You won't be able to link the two though so you'll need to set any automated moves in their respective apps
Why don't they just design a dedicate button for speed, and other 2 buttons just for up and down. I can't understand why they design the operation in such a complicated way.
I wish this could be center mounted on a sturdy tripod instead of having to use two
Not sure how that would work, since it extends.
I thought the major flaw you were going to point out was that it has a lighter max payload than the Slypod and Slypod E. When Moza is calling this the "Pro," shouldn't it have a higher max payload?
Not necessarily. I had a smallish cinema rig on this and it managed just fine. If a slightly lower max payload gives me twice the travel distance I'm all for it.
i'm surprised you're playing with this - that thing is so noisy. i've had so many issues with gudsen's stuff i don't think i can ever in good faith use any more of their gear.
honestly debating the organ donating price tag of the jib one.
Not so noisy. Bear in mind it's sat right underneath a shotgun mic ;-) I've had mixed results with some Moza gear, but overall it's been a positive experience.
@@dodmedia yeah my mic kept picking it up when with the zoom recorder positioned elsewhere
Lots of people are asking but I don't see any replies, so I'll try: has the app been fixed since you did this review?
The app is stable now, but the process is still the same painful exercise to get things working in the right order
Commenting before watching... but is the one flaw how freakin loud it is? Cuz it is freakin loud!!
Hi there, do you know if MOZA updated the App in 2023 ?
It's stable but its no less convoluted
@@dodmedia Yes and I've seen there's no way to change the battery so the monopod becomes a useless monopod 😅
Mine still works fine 🤷
@@dodmediaThanks for your feedback 👌 Is your one 2 years old? Still under warranty? I don't remember if Moza sent you this unit for this video 😅
What will you do if your battery is dead ? Is there a way to replace the battery?
Glad you got your slypod pro because all the backers from kickstarter are completely in the dark. No news from Moza its been more than a month now
not one got deliverd by now?
@@lonesmithfilms934 backers are losing their patience very littel response back from Moza as well we only see cookie cutters awnsers to reply. The closest thing to automat3d replies. Quite frustrating
How loud is the motor in db?
At what speed?
@@dodmedia High speed.
@@dodmedia At high speed. Have you tried it on any telephoto lens? Do you get a smooth footage?

wow.

Moza is pushing a $535 special on this “today” anyone know if they fixed the software issues?
I made the purchase yesterday with that promotion. I still haven't received my Aircross 3 bought in January. The product looks incredible to use it in a macro, I hope the app does not fail. $535 - $10 for the first purchase coupon.
Silent, manually operated version with a flywheel would be nicer.
Zeapon PT + Zeapon Micro 2 E800 $1,168 USD... I have seen many videos of these products and it seems to me that MOZA has better control stabilization. I hope my Slypod Pro and Aircross 3 are the best. $1,021 USD
Are you happy?
Gudsen MOZA - comment (9 month ago, march 2021):
"We are optimizing the multi-axis linkage control, will improve it thru future firmware upgrade."
Hello Gudsen MOZA, what about Your promisses?
This with the gimbal is $1000 to $1100.
Most people will only want a follow mode and to have to spend $399 minimum for the lowest cost gimbal is more than a normal silent track slider with follow focus.
Moza please offer a normal motorized slider that is silent, has follow focus, and utilizes your app which is the best slider app I've come across. Want to differentiate? Have it be mountable upside down and have it "upgradable" to longer lengths via a carbon fiber speed rail kit with a longer belt. This should cost $399 to be competitive with neewer and GVM. The more expensive sliders don't offer enough to cost $1400.
C'mon Moza - your hardware people are great. Your software people need some help.
It seems it makes a lot of noise...
(Dec. 2021) I ran into the trap and bought both devices. And I aggree: Both devices are awesome. BUT: If anybody plans to use both devices as a Robot, HANDS OFF!!! The software (APP) is -simply said- crap .-)
I have the MOZA Slypod and after a year of using it on a ton of projects, it’s been more of a pain than a pleasure. The App is atrocious and honestly the amount of time you’re taking to set up the slider then setting up the shots should be a deal breaker to all of you watching.
Thanks for this comment. It helps alot, regarding this product long term use and this company. I thought i was put of with that horrible sound of the motors only but appears thats just the start of the problems hehe
it seems to me is not very stable system..so for portability what you suggest,
@@jonathaborzicchi6212 it’s stable. It’s not weak by any means, just loud and limited by software
@@BrandonTalbot sounds interesting, it's so important the noise porbblem..most of time the shot you take with this are broll i thing or product shots, food video..etc

Of your battery die (and It will die) you can trash the thing
Yeah that's the issue with any inbuilt battery device. I have a project to modify my Rhino ARC II to add an NP F adapter to it. With the help of an electrical engineer of course!
It's so fu**Ing loud like my slypod e
