Love when the island is a different color than the cabinets!
Me too!! Thanks for watching Ann!
Thank you 😊 Great video. Love it 😍
Thanks so much for watching :-)
This is great video! Very helpful! We are remodeling right now. This video gave me a lot of ideas. Our living room will be in front of our eat at island, how far apart should our island be front our furniture? It will be a main walk through in between.
Hi Amanda and thanks for your comment!! If you have the space, I'd go with 48" from your countertop to the furniture. This way you have some room for seating and people can get buy. I always suggest tapping it off with blue tape and give it a try in your space. But it really all depends on how much room you have to work with. Hope this helps and good luck on your remodel!
@@thematerialbar, thank you so much! Very helpful. Love the blue tape idea!
I'm so excited that I found your channel! And the fact that you are just 20 minutes south of us!!!! Ahhh!!! Will for sure come see you once I figure out what I want for our kitchen and once we're ready to proceed with it! Love all your informative videos!!!
Hey thanks so much for tuning in! I'm happy this info is all helping you!
I love kitchen islands and enjoy checking out new designs! So much inspiration here!
Hey thanks so much for watching!!
Hello! At 4:30 you mentioned that you were building a 13' island for a client that would use a giant slab - may I ask which company offers a slab that large? I have been searching and can't find anything larger than Cambria's 136"x 80" - love your videos, thank you!
You know what I may have said that out of context. So I always have the conversations about how big to make the island for single slabs and Cambria has the biggest slabs. But I do end up designing several projects with larger islands like 13' per customer requests that will have a countertop seam. I'm sorry if that was confusing. So if you stick to the Cambria slab deduct about 2" for waste so your top max length should be 134". Thank you for watching 🙂 I'll be making new videos soon!!
I miss having a kitchen island! 😭. Love these design ideas!
Hey Trent thanks so much for watching though!!
Wonderful information Kerstin, thanks for sharing with us. I’m loving your channel 😁
Thanks so much for watching !! Your feedback is much appreciated lady :-)
I love these ideas!! Amazing!
Hey thanks so much for watching!
One idea I really like is having bookshelves on the ends of a kitchen island to hold cookbooks.
I love it! Thanks for tuning in!!
I dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know of a method to get back into an instagram account?
I stupidly forgot my account password. I love any tips you can give me.
@Nickolas Bowen Instablaster =)
Kerstin, what is your opinion on having no seating at the island? Ive seen this more in European modern kitchens and it definitely looks less cluttered. I have an island now (admittedly no kids) and I never use it for seating. Thanks!
Hi Tony, thanks for asking! In general for resale value most people like to have seating. In general though I always encourage to design a space that caters to you. Yes, in Europe we tend to stick with more traditional dining / breakfast tables and keep islands as work spaces. A lot of the islands don't have seating. This way you can get way more cabinet storage in your island as well, so if this is what's preferred I think you should go for it!!
formidable 😜
great picture samples!
Thanks for watching friend!!
I wished you would have covered a long island made as a table
Also, islands with ends that are different. Shelves on one side and closed cabinets in the other. Thanks and great job.
Hey thanks for watching! I'll take notes to touch base on those styled islands in another video. Thanks!
@@thematerialbar Awesome! Can't wait!! Thank you!
My kitchen island is located far away from my kitchen stove and sink. i use my kitchen island as my dining table too.
Hey thanks for watching!! Yes, sometimes the perfect triangle doesn't work in every space. I bet you enjoy having an island!
Great video I would love to see a photo of one of those 13 feet islands I’m considering putting one in now but I’m really afraid if it’s just too big
Hey Bella, thanks for tuning in! It's difficult to get a feel for the island size on a picture. I would just make sure it's proportionate right for the rest of the kitchen. Also make sure you're island is substantial in width, otherwise it starts looking weird :-) Hope this helps!
Thank you, Kerstin. Your videos are great! Do you have a favorite light blue or french blue paint color for the kitchen island that goes with white cabinets on the perimeter?
Hey thanks so much for watching!! I don't have a particular favorite blue but I am a fan of rich darker blues with green hues. Some fun color ideas are SW Naval, SW Charcoal Blue (nice and masculin!!), and Benjamin Moore Charlotte Slate. I hope this helps and have fun remodeling!
@@thematerialbar Thank you!
Super content I love kitchen islands - New sub here :D
Awesome thanks for watching!!
Hey fellow Kitchen Lovers! I hope you enjoy this video and make sure to leave any questions below!!
what about a T shape island. What are your thoughts? thanks.
I usually prefer a rectangular island but if it fit's the space, I wouldn't discount it. You could do a very cool integrated island with a T-shaped island. Thanks for tuning in!
Hi I am Remodeling my kitchen and my a question for you is how do you feel about two island kitchen versus one island and maybe you You could do a video on that thank you
Hi Jamal, great question. I think if your space truly allows for enough walk ways you can think about a 2 island kitchen. In most cases your middle island is a prep kitchen without seating so there is nobody in your way. Usually the second island is the one with seating. It's also important your work triangle is not split up by one of the islands. So even though you end up with lots of cabinets and very large space, your work triangle will still be condensed so it makes sense. I hope this helps and I've saved this topic for another video. Thanks for watching!
So many gorgeous cabinets & kitchen islands! Love your ideas! I wish I had a bigger kitchen:)
Awww hey thanks so much for watching lady!!
In my opinion the “basics” would be the required space. For instance the minimum width of the walk by space, etc. You didn’t discuss any space requirements, etc.
Hi and thanks for tuning in! I have another video talking about the planning basics of building an island and I go over all those details in that video. Talk soon!
I have an angled stand alone kitchen island but love the waterfall idea. Do you think it would work on my insland and how would it look?
Not too sure how it would work with an angled island. This is something best to discuss with your local countertop fabricator to see if they can angle the waterfall miter cuts to be honest. It would probably look good but it's more of a question if it's feasible. Thanks for watching!!
Can a Prefab 4x8 island slab, be cut down to 4x7? Can the bullnose on the 4th side be put back if the prefab piece is cut down to 7ft?
Hey Linda, thanks for tuning in! If it's a natural stone or quartz it can be cut down. Most likely the fabricator will edge polish in a new bullnose edge detail instead of seaming on the old edge. It's quite risky for a fabricator to cut material supplied by a customer. Especially granite as you never know if there is a fissure that may open up and cause the piece to break. You might have to call several fabricators until you find one who will take on this modification. Good luck though on your kitchen and thanks for commenting! :-)
I have a half wall in the middle of my main area (kitchen /living room) would love to find a way to incorporate this into a new design.
For an experienced designer it shouldn't be a problem. We do it all the time :-)
Great video! What are your thoughts about double islands??
Hey Julie! Well if you have the space go for it! Usually in this scenario people use the middle island without seating just for prep space and keep the walkways clear of people. The second outer island becomes the island for seating. Thanks for watching lady!
The island with the 3 inch filler, what size is that island do you think??
I'm installing a 4x7 island and I'm having trouble designing it, and finding samples online. Most look only 42" deep.
Hey Linda! If you are going for a 48" deep island, I suggest a standard depth front cabinet run (24" deep) + a 12" deep full height door run facing the back of the island plus a 12" overhang. This will get you to a 48" depth. I do this combo quite a lot. I hope this helps! :-)
Would like to know ideas for handles and pulls on cabinets.
Hi Connie! That's a great idea for another upcoming video. I've reached out to some of my hardware suppliers and hopefully we could shoot in one of their showrooms to show you all the new cabinet hardware options. Thanks for watching!
I’m wanting to redo our kitchen. Just moved into a home on the lake and needs lots of updating. I need some ideas what to do. Do you recommend me use a designer ?
I highly recommend you work with someone who understands the install process. Not every designer is the same, but having someone on your side that actually has seen certain colors, textures and materials installed will be super beneficial to you. So yes, I recommend having a designer but making sure it's someone that has install and on site experience. Congrats on your new home!!
Oops sorry for the false start, my wife and I need help with design for our 43x48 island. We have a support column that’s kind of in the way. The old island was 2 base cabinets and a top, but since it’s such a prominent focal point we want something more thought out. Can I send you a sketch and do you do consulting?
Hi Dana, thanks for tuning in! I believe we just spoke on the phone to work out an idea :-)
I'm researching kitchen remodeling and feel so lost... :( what do you think should be the best way to find a good company with fair prices?
Hi Andrea, don't give up :-) It all depends on what all you need for them to accomplish! Why don't you email me your contact and I'm happy to give you some pointers.
were is a cursor or measuring tool? cabinet vision is a lot easier
How many ft should an island be
Smaller Islands I've done are usually 3' deep by 4' long. Otherwise it starts getting really small. Thanks for tuning in Cata!!
how do you design island on 2020? how to place it?
Hey DM, thanks for watching, you just place it in the space and you can drag and drop it around as you like. You can also select items and then enter dimensions to move it exactly throughout the space. I hope this helps!!
It would be nice if you include a credit for the designs you pull from Pinterest, like a watermark or user name of some sort. That gives the original designer credit and allows your viewers to source materials.
Hey Erin, thanks for tuning in! I'll try....it's hard on Pinterest trying to find the original publicists in some cases but I'll try adding some more sources in the future. thanks!
@@thematerialbar thanks! The examples you share are gorgeous!
This is why it’s hard! Too many choices!!!
You didn’t include the most popular island sink vs no sink...
Hi Idol, thanks for tuning in! This video is more dedicated to the design style of an island rather if you want any appliances / plumbing in it. That might be a whole video in itself!! :-) Talk soon!!
