    This is great video! Very helpful! We are remodeling right now. This video gave me a lot of ideas. Our living room will be in front of our eat at island, how far apart should our island be front our furniture? It will be a main walk through in between.

      Hi Amanda and thanks for your comment!! If you have the space, I'd go with 48" from your countertop to the furniture. This way you have some room for seating and people can get buy. I always suggest tapping it off with blue tape and give it a try in your space. But it really all depends on how much room you have to work with. Hope this helps and good luck on your remodel!

    Hello! At 4:30 you mentioned that you were building a 13' island for a client that would use a giant slab - may I ask which company offers a slab that large? I have been searching and can't find anything larger than Cambria's 136"x 80" - love your videos, thank you!

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před rokem +1

      You know what I may have said that out of context. So I always have the conversations about how big to make the island for single slabs and Cambria has the biggest slabs. But I do end up designing several projects with larger islands like 13' per customer requests that will have a countertop seam. I'm sorry if that was confusing. So if you stick to the Cambria slab deduct about 2" for waste so your top max length should be 134". Thank you for watching 🙂 I'll be making new videos soon!!

    Kerstin, what is your opinion on having no seating at the island? Ive seen this more in European modern kitchens and it definitely looks less cluttered. I have an island now (admittedly no kids) and I never use it for seating. Thanks!

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před rokem +1

      Hi Tony, thanks for asking! In general for resale value most people like to have seating. In general though I always encourage to design a space that caters to you. Yes, in Europe we tend to stick with more traditional dining / breakfast tables and keep islands as work spaces. A lot of the islands don't have seating. This way you can get way more cabinet storage in your island as well, so if this is what's preferred I think you should go for it!!

      Hey Bella, thanks for tuning in! It's difficult to get a feel for the island size on a picture. I would just make sure it's proportionate right for the rest of the kitchen. Also make sure you're island is substantial in width, otherwise it starts looking weird :-) Hope this helps!

    Hi I am Remodeling my kitchen and my a question for you is how do you feel about two island kitchen versus one island and maybe you You could do a video on that thank you

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před 3 lety

      Hi Jamal, great question. I think if your space truly allows for enough walk ways you can think about a 2 island kitchen. In most cases your middle island is a prep kitchen without seating so there is nobody in your way. Usually the second island is the one with seating. It's also important your work triangle is not split up by one of the islands. So even though you end up with lots of cabinets and very large space, your work triangle will still be condensed so it makes sense. I hope this helps and I've saved this topic for another video. Thanks for watching!

  • @jrsands
    @jrsands Před 2 lety +1

    I have an angled stand alone kitchen island but love the waterfall idea. Do you think it would work on my insland and how would it look?

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před 3 lety

      Not too sure how it would work with an angled island. This is something best to discuss with your local countertop fabricator to see if they can angle the waterfall miter cuts to be honest. It would probably look good but it's more of a question if it's feasible. Thanks for watching!!

  • @lindazjunk

    Can a Prefab 4x8 island slab, be cut down to 4x7? Can the bullnose on the 4th side be put back if the prefab piece is cut down to 7ft?

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Linda, thanks for tuning in! If it's a natural stone or quartz it can be cut down. Most likely the fabricator will edge polish in a new bullnose edge detail instead of seaming on the old edge. It's quite risky for a fabricator to cut material supplied by a customer. Especially granite as you never know if there is a fissure that may open up and cause the piece to break. You might have to call several fabricators until you find one who will take on this modification. Good luck though on your kitchen and thanks for commenting! :-)

    Great video! What are your thoughts about double islands??

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Julie! Well if you have the space go for it! Usually in this scenario people use the middle island without seating just for prep space and keep the walkways clear of people. The second outer island becomes the island for seating. Thanks for watching lady!

  • @lindazjunk
    @lindazjunk Před 3 lety +1

    The island with the 3 inch filler, what size is that island do you think??
    I'm installing a 4x7 island and I'm having trouble designing it, and finding samples online. Most look only 42" deep.

    • @thematerialbar
      @thematerialbar  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Linda! If you are going for a 48" deep island, I suggest a standard depth front cabinet run (24" deep) + a 12" deep full height door run facing the back of the island plus a 12" overhang. This will get you to a 48" depth. I do this combo quite a lot. I hope this helps! :-)

    • @thematerialbar

      I highly recommend you work with someone who understands the install process. Not every designer is the same, but having someone on your side that actually has seen certain colors, textures and materials installed will be super beneficial to you. So yes, I recommend having a designer but making sure it's someone that has install and on site experience. Congrats on your new home!!
