There is one really important nutrient involved in hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism: selenium.
90% of hypothyroid problems are related to an autoimmune disease called Hashimotoâs. Most cases of hyperthyroidism are also related to an autoimmune condition.
An autoimmune condition is a situation where you have cells, or antibodies, made by your own body that attack your thyroid. These antibodies prevent your thyroid from functioning and also create a lot of inflammation.
You may know that iodine is really important for the thyroid, but so is selenium. Most of the selenium in your body is concentrated in your thyroid.
A selenium deficiency is very common in people with hypothyroidism. But selenium can significantly reduce the antibodies involved in these autoimmune conditions.
Selenium also supports the thyroid as a whole and helps you convert the non-active form of the thyroid hormone T4 to the active form.
Selenium has also been known to help decrease other symptoms related to thyroid problems, including:
⢠Myxedema
⢠Inflammation
⢠Bulging eyes
⢠Thyroid nodules
⢠Thyroid enlargement
⢠Excess hydrogen peroxide
Selenium can even help decrease the risk of getting an autoimmune condition and has many other health benefits.
Foods rich in selenium:
⢠Meat
⢠Fish
⢠Brazil nuts
⢠Eggs
⢠Dairy
⢠Garlic
⢠Onion
⢠Cabbage
⢠Broccoli
⢠Organ meats
You can consume foods high in selenium or take a selenium supplement (200 mcg) along with other trace minerals.
If you have Graveâs or Hashimotoâs, you may also want to consider taking a product called Thytrophin PMGÂŽ by Standard Process.

Thanks for watching! I hope this helps increase your awareness of the benefits of selenium for thyroid problems. Iâll see you in the next video.
I took myself off Synthroid slowly last year. In May 2024, I have been off one year. I was on Synthroid for just over twenty years. I felt horrible on that medication. My hair became thinner. I started gaining weight. Since being off Synthroid, I have dropped twenty two pounds, my hair looks so much better and is thicker, and I feel better!! I have been doing Intermittent Fasting since early 2019 and for the most part eating healthy keto. I also take Vitamin D3-K2, Sea Kelp, Trace Minerals, Nascent Iodine, Nutritional Yeast, eat two Brazil Nuts daily unless I'm fasting all day, and a few more. They are all organic and high quality. I believe I was misdiagnosed twenty years ago and I'm thankful for the knowledge I have now. All the symptoms of so-called hypothyroidism are gone since getting off that drug. I did this for myself. Thank you, Dr. Berg!!
That stuff made me so sick
I couldn't function. I take pig thyroid. Works great along with listening to dr. Berg
Please share the types of food in healthy Keto that you have been eating . Iâve been taking synthroid for over 17 years and would like to stop. My doctor says to increase my medication from 75mg go 100mg and I refused.
@@BLouieB at least change to armored thyroid. I was completely sick on the synthetics. Armored thyroid is natural pig thyroid and covers much more. I do natural iodine and my numbers are slowly getting better. Also taking selenium per a dr. Berg video. Good luck!
â@@twiley3530same here! Levothyroxine made me sick for 20 years, I truly believe it ruined my life, its infuriating! I'm now on Armour thyroid also with much success. Do you have Hashimoto's (autoimmune) & take Iodine or are you just considered to have Hypothyroidism?

Let me tell you an interesting story.
For the past three years, my mother has been dealing with hypothyroidism and arthritis. Her doctor prescribed her several medications, including calcium, to treat her hypothyroidism and arthritis, but unfortunately, she didn't see any noticeable improvement over the course of six months. In fact, her condition seemed to be getting worse.
That's when I decided to do some research and checked sources such as "Science Direct" and other reliable websites. After getting into the pages, I discovered that the medications she was taking were hindering her body's ability to absorb calcium, and that selenium was actually the key supplement that could help her normalize thyroid function. Now she takes only selenium for 3 months, we'll see after 3 more how are the results, but she's telling me she feels good.
It blows my mind that doctors have no idea about nutrition.
Doctors seem to be against anything and everything that can't be prescribed. I thank Big Pharma for that!
â@@Meisterling. some time most of the time patients seek help from the internet . From Johannesburg South Africa đżđŚ
It's amazing, sad & scary how our medical system is failing us.

I have had this pretty much my whole life and no one has ever brought this up. Explains so much. Thank you.
Hashimotos since 2017, symptoms really diminish if I don't eat gluten, sugar or carbs and do intermittent fasting. But, soon as I fall off the wagon the symptoms start coming back within 3 weeks. Your videos have really helped.

I have been to many doctors for.this disease for last 30 yrs. They only took fee, recommended test biannual, prescribed dosage. Nothing else, no diet nothing.
Which doctor teaches you so much. You are Godsend. Now I know so much about this.
Im so sick of going to doctor's who are viewing you merely as a paycheck. NATURE HAS EVERYTHING WE NEED.
Just want to reinstate this - Brazil nuts are VERY VERY high in selenium.
Just 1-2 nuts per day is more than enough to ensure you donât need to take any selenium supplements.
Donât overtake though, excess Brazil nuts will cause selenium toxicity.
Dr Barbara OǸeill recommends 3-4 per day. But yes, excess Brazil nuts is not good.
You are 100% correct. I would prefer to take 1 Brazil nut per day, then reduce to 1 every other day to start.
He released a video some time ago explaining that brasil nuts may not be the best source of selenium because the phytic acid within them binds to selenium and other minerals like magnesium and copper. You will need to soak brasil nuts overnight to reduce the phytic acid to really benefit.

My nutritionist told me about Selenium many years ago and I have not been taking it regularly.I certainly will be taking it daily now.
You explain this much better than my doctor
Same in my country. No endocrinologist has ever enlightened me about these important minerals. 4 years ago I've been diagnosed with Hashimoto abf since then I've been on Euthyrox. Thanks to Dr Berg I know the importance of selenium which I am taking daily it's been 2 months now. But the thing is pharmacies don't sell it in its pure form I mean it's always combined with other vitamins and minerals and unfortunately it contains titanium dioxide
Eat brazil nuts
How many microgram you taking Euthyrax?
50 micrograms
I purchase from an online place called iherb. they have everything. I did get plain selenium capsules from a company called Thorn. Manufactured by them, not someone else.
Take brazil nuts as pills. One nut (pill) per day.
So many unclear explanations from so many and no one is as clear and precise as you

Are we able to get off of thyroid meds and if so how ?
Thank you, Dr. BERG!đ
Youâre very informative and there are many people benefiting from your knowledge for FREE! Thatâs a blessing! My endocrinologists have been useless and Iâve taken it into my own hands watching you, dr. Jason Fung and Thomas Delaur. My TPO was almost 600 and one f the endocrinologists said you only check it once and will have no need to check it again!! I did some research and started keto two years ago, ate a Brazil nut a day and brought that TPO down to 120 after getting general dr to test it again. Iâve gotten off my Metformin and my TSH is much better but I think the levothyroxine being upped last year has made me lose SO much more hair. I think maybe Iâm taking too much now that Iâve brought a lot of bloodwork numbers down including my triglycerides Fromm 320 to 111! I canât get into a new we endo dr until next Feb!! Should I get my blood work done with the whole thyroid panel and if it all looks good cut my levo Fromm .88 to half?
The dose of Levothyroxin depends on TSH level and body weight both should be measured periodically. What is the last result? Both under treatment and over treatment are harmful. You need to test TSH level only - full thyroid panel is not necessary.Stay safe.
â@@mithidas4295- whole panel not necessary? Really? THS only? Hahaha you ve gonna be kidding man!
You need to check anti TPO and Anti Tg constantly. This is a must
â@@mithidas4295- you dont need levothyroxine, instead heal your gut first by L glutamine and probiotic and your TSH will get to normal range
â@@mithidas4295 absolutely not true at all, dont listen to this person OP
One thing I'd add that it should be 200mcg of l-selenomethionine (organic selenium). Not the synthetic one. l-selenomethionine is easier to absorb, which reduces the risk of toxicity. Also: high levels of selenium are toxic. 200mcg is a safe dose to be taken regularly on a daily basis. Higher doses should be taken under the supervision of knowledgeable holistic/functional doctor.
Thank you for your comment Lucy.â¤
Have you seen the improvement
You could also just eat 2 Brazilian nuts a day

Love your videos Dr Berg! I was treated with radioactive iodine twice for my Grave's Disease and now taking Armour Thyroid for life. Would selenium help my condition since my thyroid is basically dead?
Dear Dr. Berg, I recently came across your comments regarding the product called Thyropin and its ability to deplete Hashimoto's related antibodies from the blood. As I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's, I was hoping to get more information on this product and its usage. Do you have any other resources or blog posts I can refer to?

Copper also very important for thyroid, especially thyroxine production t4
I have hashimoto's. When I was finally diagnosed my TPO was over 800. I think if I had gotten diagnosed much earlier I probably would have been able to save my thyroid. The anti-bodies destroyed my thyroid. I had to have it removed 2 years ago. It was wrapped around my trachea basically grew to encompass my entire neck. It took 3 hours for the doctor to remove it.
The same thing happened to me, I was in surgery for 5 hours and huge scar to show for it.
Yes Hypo then Hashimotos. Armour 3doses. Take selenium & VitD. Love The Knowledge. Thanks.
Thanks for helping us handle the safety part of taking these supplements. It gives me confidence when I take new ones.
28 years ago, half my thyroid was surgically removed with an adenoma the size of an apple. I had no review because I still had half left. A few years later I went hypothyroid. Even though my hair was falling out in bunches; I was so cold, I used to lie in front of a roaring fire wearing my husband's warmer jumper; I was constipated and constantly tired. As I was a working mum of triplets, repeated GP visits did not help. After 6 months, a locum GP finally ordered a simple blood test! I've been on thyroxine ever since, on reduced doses with advancing age. I had an annual test in 2019. Then The Madness intervened. I am 69, unjabbed in Italy, so I had no further checks until February this year. In the meantime, hair falling out, constipation, fatigue... guess what? My dose has gone back up
Just read a comment about copper being good for your condition. Look into that
Oh WOW!!
I've said it b4 and I'll say it again you, Dr. Berg, are amazing!
I've been getting more and more tired over the last year and trying to figure out why... I have been taking kelp for iodine. It seemed to help for awhile- then I got this costochondritis. My digestion which was already bad got really horrible, painful- I can barely eat at all. With digestive enzymes and hci/betain that is getting much better, thank you for convincing me I had low stomach acid instead of high! Plus all the bloating, gas, belching for hours every time I eat have almost stopped!
I am 72 and lost all my 3 brothers in their 60's, so I've been wondering if I'm winding down-- I definitely am NOT thriving! Last week my doctor told me she was writing me a scrip for thyroid med (I am on NO meds as yet). I have always read & listened and helped myself with supplements. I got on magnesium when my bp started climbing.
(Sorry, I didn't mean to go on like this!)
The point is, my costo is better, but I'm still SO tired. My mother was on thyroid meds for years with no relief, so I really didn't want to pick up the prescription I have. And today I saw this about selenium so I'm heading to the vitamin store!! I really need to do things- not just worry about my health and age!!
You do seem to be psychic!!
Thank youâŁ

Hi there. Thank you very much. Have a nice day!
Thank you for all you do for us, Dr. Berg.
Thank you Dr. Berg! The #1 thing to think about when it comes to your thyroid is, we know that that iodine is the only halide your body can use, so why are the other 3 (fluoride, bromide, and chloride) stuffed into everything you eat and drink?
We're supposed to stay dependent on the medical system. It's not about health.
I stopped using toothpaste with fluoride and started making my own with coconut oil, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
My teeth are finally white and became less sensitive to cold. So way better.
Saw the recipe on one of Dr. Bergs videos

Perfect!
After being on levothyroxine and then switched to actual Synthroid-battling with the pharmacy to not get the generic version per dr., increasing dosages every 3-6 months; years later I still felt so bad, seemed to actually be getting worse. Diagnosed with Hashis, though the specialist didn't bother to tell me, I found out looking at my labs online. I'd complain to Dr. & specialist about feeling bad, they'd just shrug their shoulders while looking at the labwork and say ehh "you're fine".
I then realized based on my symptoms, I was flipping between hyper and hypo, and the thyroid condition was a symptom to the Hashis, and wasn't a constant hypothyroid thing going on. I weaned myself off the levo, and started taking vitamins. Magnesium, Vit D with K2, selenium, B complex, zinc, and few times a week some Irish Sea Moss capsules. Still not 100% but definitely 100% better than I was pre-levo and right after stopping it. When I start feeling bad like the hypo is kicking in which is getting rarer, I pop a lower dose levo and that usually takes care of it from turning into full blown hypo. Dr. wasn't too thrilled when I told her I stopped taking it-this was about 9 months after I had stopped. She instantly wanted lab work done-and it came back perfect. Once I explained my theory to her, she said kind of makes sense. Just come back in every 6 months or so and we'll do lab work. Haven't been back because I haven't felt bad like I did before. See so many people saying the same thing, the meds weren't helping them and they just constantly felt bad. I wonder if more people are in that same situation.
Hi Chris fantastic information. Thank you so much.
I used to take a medication called Levoxl
I took it for about seven years and then they removed removed it from the market âŚ..
It was the only thyroid medication that worked for me. Now Iâm back on levothyroxine, which is as you say, pure garbage. đŻ
Medical doctors are trained to treat symptoms with chemicals. Treating the cause is the cure, and toxic chemicals generally donât treat the cause
Levothyroxine is junk! Nothing but T4 which is the storage hormone and full of junk inactive ingredients and alot of people have conversions issues and can't take the T4 and turn it into T3 which gives you energy! Conventional Drs. either don't seem to know this or don't care as long as their pockets are being lined prescribing this DEVIL drug! I understand it may work for a small amount of people but the majority no. This drug ruined my life and kept me sick for 20 years, very very sad.
You can bet on it! That's why I didn't want to fill my prescription of levothyroxine. I have heard a lot of drs post that it may just be that you aren't converting properly!
The ones your insurance pays won't tell you about nutrients. It's sad!
I think the general public needs to get together and see if we can get naturopaths or holistic drs approved!

My gallbladder was encased in scare tissue from the issue. Second... oh my God, so I was feeling sick for a few days, trouble breathing and feeling sick but I was running a fever so he thought I was making it up. The next day (literally), green mucus was coming out of my ears, but still no fever. When I found this doc, thought he was okay. He listen to me about the pain I have daily but still thought I was over reacting to things. It wasn't until I didn't have my period for a year that he tested my thyroid but just gave me meds (that made me sick) and didn't care about anything else. I am sick of doctors

Thank you Dr Berg. I take sĂŠlĂŠnium for inside tissues reconstruction since more than 10y. Back then, it happened that I felt I could reduce my thyroid med slowly, then stop it (under medical watch) and all the âballsâ in my neck reduced and desappeared. I always thought it was because of changing my diet. Now, this video is an eye opener ;)
Are you referring to goiter? If so, that is related to an iodine deficiency. Without sufficient selenium in your diet, your iodine could become out of balance and even toxic at times. Having enough selenium intake will optimize iodine and allow it to do it functions. Also Fluorine, chlorine & bromine are similar enough to iodine that your thyroid will suck them up and store them in place of iodine. If fluorine, chlorine & bromine displace iodine, your thyroid won't have enough iodine to produce thyroid hormones. Flouride is in most toothpastes and tap water, bromine in swimming pools, chloride is founds in table salt and processed salty meats. Use sea salt instead of sodium chloride which isn't real salt.
Plese tell me your diet â¤

For the person who walks and walks w/o weight loss, that was me a few years ago. Changing my diet was what helped me most. Yo need to figure out what foods work best for you to loose weight. For me stopping all processed foods and fasting worked best. Carnivore/Keto foods are best to try. Hope this helps.
Today is 5-8-2023. I will politely face down my Endocrinologist this morning. When I first started using Emory Hospital for my health, my daughter and IâŚ..plus my sister, had it clearly documented that for all three of us, our bodies do not convert T4 into T3. That was 14 years ago that we had it documented. About 8 years ago, I started having massive issues throughout my body. Common sense told me all issues were connected, however doctors kept trying to make each symptom as completely separate from each other. When having Labs, stupidly, I did not go over my Labs. I just accepted it when the doctor told me that everything looked goodâŚâŚ.including my thyroid. Last week my daughter specifically looked at the Labs and it showed that for several years I was only given the TSHâŚâŚ.so, he was not getting a true reading. In the meantime, my sister WITH her own thyroid issues, developed Graves along with it, almost died and had to have her thyroid killed. Top this off with I have been seeing double for several years. Now, why on earth would my Opthalmologist suspect my thyroid had gone into TED ( thyroid eye disease ) sinceâŚâŚmy TSH was normal ? See how everything depends on that T3 and T4 being properly diagnosed. Oh ! And because of Graves, my sister developed heart problems. SooooooâŚâŚ.this morning my Endocrin and I will have a very very in-depth appointment, and I will firmly but respectfully be requested so many Labs, they probably will take1/2 gallon of blood from me. But, I MEAN to leave that department with some solid results. This video came at the perfect moment to coincide with my appointment day.â¤ď¸
Hope you are doing better!
@@campbellpaul LOL. Since Labs have not been done until today, it will be several days before I get the results. And prayerfully, THEN maybe I will start to feel better. Thank you, Paul !â¤ď¸
Praying you Doc will LISTEN and give you the care you need and deserve!
I applaud you standing up and taking care of your health!!!â¤
@@susanmaziarz8936 Thank you, Susan ! I feel that he pretty much HAS to listen, since we had my T converting issues documented at Emory all those years ago.â¤ď¸
Some doctors may not know any better or care to know. I have Gravesâ disease and have been treating it on my own since Iâve had side effects to the medication that my doctor doesnât seem to care about. Iâm sure your sisters heart related problems are exacerbated due to Gravesâ disease. I wish you strength and good results.
Doc i always listen to your health blog.
Thank you Doctor Eric Berg đ
You are very welcome!
This was such a helpful video. I did know what each antibody test was testing, and now I do. Thank you Dr. Berg.
Glad you find this helpful. Have a nice day!

Hi Doc. Can you do a video for people who have had their thyroid removed. Thanks
PLEASE !
Heâs made several helpful videos on how to live without a thyroid.
I had a hemithyroidectomy in 2018. Following that surgery my TSH, T4 & T3 were really low so my endocrinologist put me on high a high dose of thyroxine. 5 years later I feel terrible, my joints ache and I canât lose the excess weight Iâve gained ( and Iâm on 1200 calories a day). Iâve decided to try and wean myself off of thyroxine and use natural methods to try and stimulate what remains of my thyroid. Can you offer any advice Dr Berg?
Love this guy!!
Selenomethionine cream is better than lotion to me! đŻ Thanks Sir!!
Where do you get this cream?
Thanks for sharing what works for you.
I ordered some of the Thytrophin caps but am a little confused on the dosage. Dr Berg mentioned taking 1 of the Thytrophin capsules at bedtime but Standard process recommends 1 capsule 3 times daily on an empty stomach.
Yes, I started taking them and itâs 3 times per day.
Currently I am still suffering from hypothyroidism for more than four years and seven years ago I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and there is not a single doctor who forbids me from eating or recommends me to eat any food, thank you doc ââfor providing this very, very useful information, because hypothyroidism Recently this has really disturbed my menstrual cycle, hopefully with food recommendations from the doctor I can change my menstrual cycle to normal again
Dr Berg, if there's thyroid nodules already. How can it be reverse or shrink it? Your recommendation please.
Try eating two Brazilian nuts a day. This healed my husbandâs nodules. He continues to be monitored by an Endocrinologist, but the nodules are gone. Started the Brazilian nuts while waiting for his appointment with the doctor. The nodules and accompanying pain were gone by the time he could get in to see the doctor.
I soooo needed this! Thank you Dr. Berg! I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 6yrs oldâŚIâm 34 now. In March my levels were at 0.46 did blood work in April and my levels are now up to 12.20 đ¤ŻđąđŤŁâŚmy levels have been wayyy worse in the past. Hoping to find a good endocrinologist because Iâm tired of my body not only having to go through this but feeling like BLAH. Youâre appreciated more than you may know! đđź
Don't be surprised if you don't get much help from an electrologist.. I never met one yet who did anything for me! I learned for myself

Thank you Dr Berg your knowledge is helping me so much. Could you do a video on supplements after total thyroidectomy? There are many of us! I take thyroxine but am wondering about iodine, kelp, etc - how to boost energy, health, etc, It is hard to find info on how the lack of a thyroid gland affects other systems. Infinite gratitude and blessings to you!
Yes please. Help Dr. Berg
what about parathyroid level lowering ideas?
