0:00 - The most beautiful thing in football
0:16 - Playing style at Al Sadd SC
2:59 - In possession against a high press
    6:04 - Creating numerical superiorities
9:51 - Pressing without the ball and the importance of the second ball
12:39 - Changing mentality to treasure the ball
In the first of two exclusive Masterclass features with The Coaches’ Voice, Barcelona and Spain legend Xavi gives a fascinating insight into the style of play he has looked to instil in his first job as a head coach with Al Sadd SC in Qatar.
The former midfielder, one of the greatest passers in the history of the game, explains his commitment to the possession game and discusses the strategies he has employed against both a high press and, as is more often the case in his current role, a deep-lying low block. He talks about the necessity of numerical superiority, both in possession and out of possession, and the importance of winning the second ball.
He also reflects on the change in mentality he has looked to develop in his players - one where they treasure the ball rather than play in fear of it.

Yea - all so simple. Yet 99% of coaches in the US are doing their own systems:) Many would say that this style of play can only be achieved with the special players. Yet, if we continue playing kick and run, we will never develop these players. Small guys like Xavi and Iniesta would be cut from MLS academies of today:)

Quite evident that he follows Pep's playing style so much, i remember Busqi, Iniesta, Pique and all the Barca veterans saying that Xavi's mind is made to read and understand games, which is what makes him such an amazing midfielder, and that back in 14-15, his teammates were pretty sure of him managing Barca someday.

This is why midfielders are genius managers. They know how to dominate and control the midfield, they know how to keep the ball, they know how to regain the ball, they know how to pass the ball, the know how to build an attack sequence or a defensive sequence. If you look closely, all the great managers are midfielders: Cruyff, Zidane, Xavi, Pep, all midfielders.

the thing about his tactic is that, the players, especially the goalkeeper and the backs, must have a very good vision and composure to break through the high press and find the free man from the build-up in the back. so, his gameplan will require if not world class players, a superior squad in that one particular competition. the only teams that i think xavi can implement this type of tactic to are Man City, Liverpool, PSG, possibly Juventus, Milan and Inter. no doubt its a good tactic, but if you have a shit squad, this tactic will most likely fail against any team.
