  • Over the past year, the United States government has sent more than 25,000 asylum seekers back to Haiti while the country is in the throes of chaos. A full-scale war is under way in the capital, Port-Au-Prince, between rival gangs that are fighting for territory and influence.
Homicides and kidnappings have soared since Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise was killed in 2021.
The Biden administration has used a controversial tool known as Title 42 to deport the majority of the Haitian asylum seekers, essentially using the COVID-19 health crisis as a pretext to avoid hearing asylum claims.
The programme was first implemented by the Trump administration and international human rights groups have widely criticised the practice as discriminatory against Black asylum seekers.
On this episode of Fault Lines, we travel to Haiti during this tumultuous time to see how deportees are coping with this crisis.

We're so inhumane and unjust!! Funny that in spite of all your "horror stories" about our "inhumane immigration system," millions of people are still trying to get here. 5.5 million since Biden took office, 2020-2022. Over 1000 deaths. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT. *Seems like your narrative doesn't fit the facts.* And, as you can see, some of us aren't stupid.

I AGREE, EVEN IF MY OWN PEOPLE DO SOMETHING ILLEGAL, THE US HAS THE RIGHT TO DEPORT,
I don't see how DR who has provided the most help for haitians is always blamed for the haitians own doings, the DR is just trying to protect its people from Colera etc. And don't forget the gangs and criminals that smuggle in, the DR is only doing what any country that cares for its own population would do, and although they continue to help haitians most haitians never talk about the good things the DR continues to do for them, so ungrateful all the time, no matter how much help DR has and continues to provide, from free education, medical attention and jobs. All while haitians torture, rape and mutilate DR citizens, all you got to do to confirm is research the documented cases, it would be nice if for once instead of throwing dirt on the pople willing to help, you would at least be grateful, because with most haitian is danmed if you and danmed if you don't, never see the good in others, I know the situation is critical, but don't blame the only nation which has always been there to support somehow one way or another, and do understand that every country has the right to filter the migrants which come in to their country, specially if there is real threat and turmoil in the country that borders yours, that way you keep everyone, your own citizens, as well as the migrants safe, otherwise , both countries would wind up in the same sitiation which haiti is currently in.
Think about it, The boats transporting slaves in great part were French, France is greatly responsible for the poverty in Haiti, just like US and Canadian NGOs and lets not forget the Haitian elites themselves, who allow this suffering upon their people, I pray for peaceful restauration of Haitians without them having to flee and invade other territories, I hope they find the courage to fight to regain the stability of Haiti, may God bless you all!

I like the way the media cover this issue, based on their opinion, countries should just delete their laws, bring down their borders and accept every immigrant that wants to go in, but when asked, whats the solution to the homelessness and sanitary issues in California, where Americans are currently struggling their only solution is to raise the taxes. If a Country cant deal successfully with the problems of their own population how can that country be expected to take care of a few hundreds of thousands of immigrants coming through daily?

The Hattians fought back and freed themselves in what is called the largest slave revolt in the Americas and killed the French and anyone working with the French going on to fight off the Portuguese and the Spanish and colonial US. For them daring to free themselves the Hattians were ordered under threat of massive invasion to pay back France billions in lost revenue. We were ridiculed, got self-hate ingrained in us, our civilizations were stripped for their resources and stolen from us, our ancient practices ceased to exist cause of the white man and we forgot who we were, it is really sad. But I do believe it is a spiritual lesson because we are the real Jews and was promised the promise land. We are the true children of God. God wants us to go through all of this so that we can spiritually evolve and connect back to source.

All of a sudden, every country in the world is struggling and they're all ending up here in the USA. Where does it say we're responsible for all these countries? What, all Americans suddenly have to support thousands of people from all over the world? Do not tell me there aren't any criminals in the bunch, and coming from all that poverty, diseases are coming in as well, so stop thinking we owe everybody on this planet free entry into the USA. So what, we have to double up on our taxes so we can support thousands and thousands of people coming here, with no trade, no way of even finding employment so will most likely be living on taxpayer dollars forever. Border patrol agents wouldn't be acting like they did if the people did what they were supposed to do and stop antagonizing the agents by ignoring their commands. Already by doing that, they're showing their character and we don't need that here. I'm tired of seeing these migrants coming over the border with attitudes that we owe them. We owe them nothing. We worked hard all our lives to support our families, our country and they should do the same. And stop playing the race card, that's getting really tired at this point.

Although I feel compassion for the Haitian people, we cannot take in every single person from these foreign countries. It's not just the Haitians, it's all these countries. EVERYONE CANNOT COME HERE. We can't afford it! And for all the woke people who say, "no person is legal," you are the very ones complaining about how "horrible and racist" America is. If it's so bad here, you should not be screaming about the UN and "immigration/asylum rights" for these people to come to this awful "racist" country.

@@rowyourboat5361 I know what woke means. It's an urban slang that we've been using for years in the Black community! It means we are intellectually aware from a political perspective. Unfortunately, the "wokest" people are some of the truly least informed. Democrats ran on an open borders policy in 2020. They all went to the Southern border during that year; and they all were speaking Spanish during their opening statements of the Democratic debate. Democrats want open borders because their goal to legalize these people to get more votes. Now they won't even respond to questions about the border, the human trafficking and the drugs pouring into the country. So don't come under my comment telling me what I don't know! Democrats are the cause of this mess. They ruin EVERYTHING they touch and then turn around and get mad when illegals are bussed into "sanctuary cities." They are the reason why crime is up. They are the reason for inflation. Democrats love spending other people's money on people who don't belong here and people who are lazy and don't want to work.

I AGREE, @YUSUF DIALLO I agree, @MrRhomas913 I don't see how DR who has provided the most help for haitians is always blamed for the haitians own doings, the DR is just trying to protect its people from Colera etc.

You can't just let people destroy their country themselves and start seeking asylum in other peoples countries. The difference between Ukraine and Haiti is not because of the color of their skin, Haiti is a case of self inflicted Harm, but for Ukraine is an war brought on them by another country.

What makes Haitians any different from the Cubans who can just hop on a boat and automatically be welcomed in the US? What about the other migrants from Mexico or South American countries who also come in large numbers? Some are welcomed others are not, but they all have their hands open when they come to the US. America should treat all migrants fairly. This is just a matter of biased.

These poor people are also at a border. Obviously, people have to follow rules to cross.
But the situation also needs massively rebooting on the border.
