I've got so much respect for Paul Shaffer. Here's why. As a leader of my own house bands for 25+ years, I always came home to my VCR to watch the master at work. Learning new material every week and playing the same room is much harder than going on tour and playing the same set in a different place every night. If you learn 3 songs a week do the math on that. That's an insane workload. The stress of remembering that much yet playing it perfect right away isn't all bad for musicians. It sure is a teacher. So, there are hand signals as to which chord, which key, and when to start and stop on a dime. I'm from Augusta home of James Brown. You'd better be tight doing that plus Elvis shows which are ALL about watching the hips, hands and generally having ESP so you can read "Elvis's" mind (since that seems to be a requirement!) Will and Anton prove your only as good as your rhythm section. So many lessons. Anyway I hope Paul understands that his contribution to American culture is as great as any artist with radio play. All this to say, someone, PLEASE show this to PAUL! :)

You know where Paul got his start, right? The famous Toronto production of Godspell that had so many of the later SNL cast members. Gilda Radner, Andrea Martin, Martin Short. Paul was the music director. All the good ones come from Toronto! I hope he comes to Halifax for the jazz festival. Bring Jon and Stephen and Michael Buble along too. So they can do a version of Barrett's Privateers IN Halifax! ON the pier!

That's why they're at the top - freak talent, can do anything, learn it fast and execute at a polished level. Paul to me on TV was always so incredibly relaxed and low key - really suited the timeslot with viewers going to bed.

It's OK. Some of us don't like Paul's lame version/singing of Marvin Gaye's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough." It was painful to hear.

Think about the massive overhead costs involved with the Late Show. Then compare the Late Show's ratings with many of the popular CZcamsrs who have virtually zero overhad costs. At some point, advertisers will realize just how shitty and obsolete this show has become. Stop glorifying these late night tv shows. They arent even relevant anymore.
