Balloon with GoPro to Near Space

High altitude unmanned balloon launch that goes up to near space and back.
HOW I GOT THE FOOTAGE BACK:
I used a SPOT GPS tracker in the payload to track where the payload fell after the balloon burst. Then I retrieved it with the GoPro and its recorded footage inside. See links below for much more details.
Yes, it’s a GoPro, yes they have a built in semi fish eye lens. Think what you want, I did this for my own enjoyment, not to prove any point.

All designed and launched by myself. All FAA regulations were followed, the FSDO was notified and given all the details, and a NOTAM was even filed with Ft Worth center for balloon activity.
A lot of people asked me why I was doing this. Mostly, I had free time and needed a project/hobby to keep me engaged and secondly, space is neat. Check out the video and see for yourself.
The Coin in the video is from my AFROTC detachment at Purdue University. Go Boilers! Shout out to Purdue Engineering for teaching me how to tackle a project like this.

Well, the Go-Pro camera makes sure you will see it that way. Why they don't just use a regular camera lens beats me! I don't care to see the horizon wobble back and forth like that. I just want to see what it REALLY looks like!

That's incredible. Send a balloon with a Go-Pro strapped to it. It goes as far as near space and drops back down to earth again. Recording the entire time. What a camera!!

crazy how the atmosphere appears as a light blue haze around the planet...glad it's there but this makes you realize just how fragile it is.
It won't be too long before we lose our magnetic shield and the solar winds that bombard our Earth every second start to ravage - around 500mill years from now which is "soon" since the Earth still technically can be here for a few billion more.

That is the effect of the false curvature; yes, it shows that the earth is quite small. And the curvature keeps changing direction, I am sure you have noticed that too.
@Jasmin For Christ - the camera didn't get quite high enough to see stars, other planets, or satellites. At night, you can see all that stuff, but during the day, no such luck.

As I watched this, I thought of people in the past. They never got to see this. How would they have reacted to seeing this? And because I watched a reimagination of the Pompeii disaster right before this video, I thought of them seeing this and how they would've felt (off tangent but the Pompeii natives probably thought the gods were angry at them🙁). Technology is amazing!
And the last shot, with you standing in front of the camera, against the backdrop of pink-blue clouds, I thought of children in centuries past, and the fact that they never got to see this, just as I'd never get to see things that happen after my death, even though they lived under the same sky as you do

I don't think I've seen anything quite like the shot when the balloon burst... something about the way it quickly goes from the view of the Earth we all know to the sun, not in a blue sky but in the blackness of space, and the balloon pieces scattering into the void as the camera falls, is just very unique and amazing.
Yet they said the sun is millions of miles away.
And when the balloon stopped ascending, it had reached the firmament (sky)
Hence the saying " the sky is the limit"
