- Stowaway in the Sky (Voyage En Ballon - 1960) was once hailed as a sequel to Albert Lamorisse's classic short The Red Balloon, but it's English dub was lost when American actor Jack Lemmon bought the rights to it and destroyed the soundtrack. So...I decided to restore it! CZcams blocked it from being shown...but not for the reason you think!

This is amazing! We enjoyed watching it so much. We are so curious - what's your background in film? Love your talking head set-up, it's so crisp and it's just such a pleasure to listen to you! :)
Wow, thanks for that. I've loved film since I was a kid, and worked in VFX (at Tippett) for about 20 years. When the pandemic hit they did away with my group and that all ended. But I met so many wonderful creative folks over the years, we all worked on each others personal projects, etc, so it was an incredible experience. I'm always struggling here with the lighting setup (I have one decent light) so I appreciate your feedback a lot on that. I'll have to check out your channel, too, it looks very cool!
Wow, Tom just watching this March 12 2024. Love what you did to restore Stowaway in the Sky. I didn't see the film back then, but would want to now. The Jack Lemmon thing is super pokey, disrespectful at the very least. I'm happy to learn of your passion for film, and thank you so much for the feeling and intelligence you bring to each review.
Thanks, that makes me happy! This film was recently re-released on video, but they kept Jack Lemmon's voice in it. Sad, but the visuals were improved at least.
I love your reviews! You’re so well-spoken. I just discovered your channel via some pre-purchase research I’m doing on Criterion’s new collection of Lamorisse films, The Red Balloon and Other Stories. I’ve actually never seen Stowaway but your other Wrapup review sold me. Hopefully it’s not sullied by the English dub!
Thank you for that! I hadn't heard about the Criterion release until folks started posting about it here. I'm hoping the release has lots of good stuff on it!
And now Criterion are releasing a Blu-ray in December, because of course they are.
Of course! Well, I'll probably buy it anyway, depending what's on it and especially if you can skip the Lemmon track.
Thank you for trying, it’s such a wonderful film. In the UK the BBC showed in for many mornings when they were introducing colour.
I'm glad it got some airplay. Thank you!
I saw the Red Balloon in 1969 in 2nd grade. I loved the movie except the ending, which is a tearjerker ending. It still is for me to this day. I really want to see this 1960 film, I'm sure I can find it somewhere.
Hello, yes, The Red Balloon is great. This one can be found on DVD in French and Spanish. In English sometimes the Jack Lemmon version comes up on Ebay on VHS.
Could you upload the whole film but without the audio? Then we could watch it while playing the (legally purchased) soundtrack so as not to incur Sony’s corporate wrath. Not perfect but it would be wonderful to see your brilliantly restored version and not see all your great work go to waste.
Thanks for that idea! Unfortunately there is music mixed throughout with dialogue and any version without audio would be missing story. However, there is still hope...Criterion is releasing a box set of all Lamorisse's movies this month. Much better video quality than what I was able to achieve, I'm sure, and there's hope that a version without the narration will be included. Just a few days from now and we'll see...I'll be sure to post about it. Thanks again.
That’s good news about Criterion. And the pre-release info has the language down as French so hopefully it will be Lemon-free…..
Thank you for a genuine effort.
My pleasure, thank you for the feedback.
I would love to see this movie! Perhaps you could try creating a google drive link for people to use. It would be much easier to bypass copyright holders by distributing the film that way.
Thanks, I'll see what we can figure out and post it here when we do.
Thanks for at least trying,,,I agree jack lemon gets in the way,,he does not fit,,hes too enthusiastic,, hes out of snyc.
Having the option to see it both ways on the recent dvd collection would have been nice.
