Final Fantasy IX - Zidane's Depression (Scenes & Battles)

  • After having learned who he really is (the previous video), Zidane falls into a major depression which is shown in this video. It is actually an incredibly amazing part of the game, if not only for the music alone, which is generally considered one of the best songs of the entire series.
9:15 for Bahamut summon, if you're curious. I used it since I figured it's the perfect time to showcase a summon.
    Plot
Make sure you watch the last video if you want to know why Zidane is like this, or it will make less sense.
    spoilers for video
So anyway, Eiko and Vivi try to help Zidane, but Zidane refuses their help and stumbles on into a bunch of fights in which all the party members help him with. They're not really hard fights unless you do them stupidly wrong.
The very end of the video shows Zidane realizing he's an idiot and them all grouping back together to go take out Garland.
    Strategy
The fights could use some strategy, but really just keep Zidane alive until the members join the fight and then you can go to town on them. Just be careful of the last enemy, it has a Smash move which reduces your HP to 1.

Zidane was the one who always helped his friends in need
He helped Vivi find a purpose and meaning in life
He helped Garnet by protecting her and helping her resolve the conflict between the nations and helped her see the outside world
He helped Freya protecting the kingdom of Burmecia
He helped Steiner to see the reality of queen Brahne and question his royalty, and it’s the same with Beatrix
He helped Quina travel the world and see different foods
He helped Eiko by protecting and saved her from her eildons being extracted from her and he helped her see the outside world
He helped Amarant in ipsel castle and made him understand what it is to be a friend
But now Zidane is the one who is in depression and needs help and his friend’s stood by his side and helped him pull out of his depression
That’s what you call true friendship

It's like since she knows how painful it is to be forgotten, when she sees that Zidane's forgotten himself she understands more than anyone else and jumps into action. She starts ribbing/goading on Zidane like they did to each other as old friends to let him know she remembers exactly who he is and will not let him fade away, and to remind him that remembering and cherishing your friends is mutual. The thing is that in the real world especially sunny positive Zidane-like people quite often become such to combat and hide some secret pain. In fact they would not become what they are without this pain. They are always strong, because weak people just succumb. Zidane, for example, probably became such positive person, because he had no family and no knowledge about his birthplace. He always wanted to have someone dear to care about and home to live in and this was his hidden tormenting pain that he had to overcome. And so he did. And because of it, sudden shocking break of the last person you would expect like in this scene makes much sense - since he actually already had that pain spot hidden inside through the entire game... and he was hit exactly into this spot.

It was such an incredible moment, both heartbreaking and beautiful to see Zidane try to forsake his friends and handle the burden himself. I get chills everytime one of Zidane's friends appear in battle to help him, that's not what you see in the recent ff games. This scene was excellent and emotional. Best part is that every character gets their own development (even Amarant) and managed to discover their own motivation especially Vivi thanks to Zidane. This scene taught me that as much as I dislike it, people can't live alone. Sometimes you feel like you can or should do things your own way, because you don't want to be a burden to others, or you think they won't understand what you feel, and maybe you can be right, but there are things you can only do with the support of others. There are good and understanding people out there still. And if you were blessed with a loving family and friends, never ever let them go.

This whole part was among one of the greatest moments that I have ever seen in gaming, period. But for the whole game Steiner has often been outright hostile, at best highly suspicious, of Zidane. It's not easy for one so loyal to his post and his duty to openly accept someone with Zidane's lifestyle. He's a thief. A vagabond. But....
Steiner has slowly opened up to him. He can't ever say directly that Zidane is his friend, but his statement above speaks volumes. He DOES see Zidane that way, even if he can't easily admit it.
I never understood as a kid but playing it again a few years ago I was moved by that admittance. Steiner became my favorite, and to this day remains so, among an entire game full of amazingly written characters.

I prefer when a company makes an entirely new game that simply shares a lot of the game mechanics.
A few examples of games like this are "Space Megaforce" for the SNES and "Perfect Dark" for the N64, which were very similar to "Gun Nac" for the NES and "GoldenEye 007" for the N64.
Another maybe slightly less familiar example is "Star Ocean" for the SFC/SNES, which was very similar to "Tales Of Phantasia" for the same console.

I thought unlocking the Hildagarde with the freedom the flying ost expressed combined with Garnet smiling in her new portrait was the highest point in this game.
Then this part happened and Zidane finally got his arc moment. All of the emotion released surpassed what I thought possible in an already emotional game

I can understand Zidane. Sometimes you just want to be alone and you hurt people who love you trying to do that. They don't deserve it from you, but you do it anyway. You think that by not troubling them or being in their life because you feel terrible you're doing them a favor, but really, you're just indulging your own fears. But you always know who the worst bastard is. Final Fantasy writing used to be so human.

God the music for this moment has stuck with me for years. one of the top 10 Final Fantasy moments ever!

  • @blacktigershearthstoneadve6905

For me it is the best Final Fantasy game EVER. Everything about it is great. Story, characters, mechanics… everyhing.
I want specifically mention the main character - Zidane. It is SO RARE for a Final Fantasy game to have a mature charismatic easy-going main character without psychological problems, who is also a natural leader. SO SO good guy. The only other similar person I can recall is Balthier, although he is not exactly the main character (and Tidus is not mature enough).
I also like Garnet/Dagger as a main female character, although sometimes she is too reserved, but at least it looks natural for her age and position and doesn't prevent her from being attractive. And she really went through A LOT - lost her real parents and people, her adopted kingdom, her voice, betrayed and almost killed by her own "mother", lost her love in the end (or at least she thought so) and she still managed to endure through everything to the happy end. I wonder if there is another FF female character who went through so much pain.
And there are so many other great characters - Beatrix (WOW!!!), Garland, Kuja, Eiko (another WOW!!!), Vivi, Tantalus guys... thinking about it, I can't even name an FF9 character I don't like. I like how Kuja's story ends. Zidane's despair scene (and music) is one of the best in the gaming history. There is so much depth and character development in plot lines for Vivi, Garnet, Amarant, Eiko, Steiner, Freya. Every character was changed by the end of the story. EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER in the game.
There is a minor issue with the final boss, who is kind of appears from nowhere not driven by a plot, but this is so minor compared to all the great stuff this game has to offer. This is one of the best games ever created.
