  • Nestled in a remote Karoo valley along the Biedouw River is Uitspankraal, near the Cederberg mountains in South Africa. Right at the end, when you don't think you can go any further is Jai Yen Yen, at the confluence of the Doring and Biedouw rivers. This place is a little oasis in the dryness of the surrounding area, although how the Namaqua daisies manage to grow wild around here, remains one of Mother Nature's secrets.
This beautifully remote region comes to life during the flower season. Hillsides of wild Namaqualand daisies line the single dirt road leading to the confluence of the Biedouw and Doring rivers. Here you will find Jai Yen Yen bush pub and wild camping, a place where you can 'uitspan' (literally meaning to unharness the yokes of the oxen pulling your ox wagon).
Jai Yen Yen is a little oasis for the weary traveller in this dry and unforgiving landscape. The bush pub and wild camping offer somewhere to chill and take in the quiet surroundings. Stargaze, bird watch, hike or grab your bike and explore the trails. There is even a 'beach' along the Doring River, the result of the seasonal flooding and recent (2023) super flood. This also makes the river crossing undriveable, so you will be forced to turn around and hang out at Kyle's place. No hardship with wild camping and the bush pub!
This old abandoned farm is being brought back to life as a low-impact, eco-minded destination. A place to which to escape from the city for a couple of days. Highly recommended for the overlander, dirt biker and wandering (flower) tourists.
Come here for some peace and quiet, explore the rocky hillsides or even take to the trail on your bike or overland vehicle. Access can be a little tricky, pay attention to the possibility of punctures and slashed tyres on the rocky dirt road.

Here * • Madwaleni - More Than ... * Kyle explains the deeper meaning of Madwaleni. In the local Xhosa language it literally means 'Place of Rocks'. A good description for the mountainous and rocky region of the Biedouw River Valley. It also means: 'you are on your journey, you have not yet reached your destination, but for now you are in the right place'.
