Elephant Sands Lodge & Hunter's Road | Episode 15 BOTSWANA SELF-DRIVE 4x4 #botswana
asimplyfab.life/ One of the required stops when travelling through Botswana is arguably Elephant Sands. If you love elephants and want to spend some time studying their behavior and group dynamic then this is a good place for that. Add in the swimming pool, bar and buffet, and good campsites and it is a very good experience! Enjoy the blog post at asimplyfab.life/elephant-sands-lodge/
We've slept with the elephants, been serenaded by hippos, found the middle of nowhere and it is in the Kalahari and it is called Xaxa, discovered the rich and complex culture of this land, floated on the mighty Chobe river. Drove the smoothest road/track and it is on the salt flats, battled the fierce heat for three weeks 🥵, made fire, kept ourselves fed and watered, camped wild, spade and toilet paper. Enjoyed some Safari lodge comfort, found a waterfall in Zimbabwe, become elephant whisperers as they walked right through camp, fantastic sunsets, got stuck (only once), drove some challenging tracks. Discovered the joys of a good G&T and the simply perfect local beer, become experts at making camp, campfire musings and early mornings, spectacular sunrises, amazing, smiling, friendly people. We now know how many cows to get married, there is only one camp with grass in the whole country, a fridge only stays cold for two nights. Cows and goats in the road, lions roaring at night, the Milky Way, loud birds in the morning. Lucky, lucky game sightings, absolute silence, cheeky baboons, thunderstorms that rattle the windows and so much more that will come as we remember. But most of all camaraderie, laughs and an openness and willingness to explore the unknown.
Join us on our mission to discover the best of what Botswana has to offer. We spent three weeks in Botswana to try and uncover the diverse natural environments and the wealth of wildlife. Botswana has a huge amount to offer the self-drive enthousiast, from the dry heat of the Kalahari, through the Okavango Delta to the Salt Pans of Makgadigadi.
So much out there - too much for one video, so here's the playlist as we explore the Kalahari, Maun, Moremi, Khwai, Chobe, Kasane, Vic Falls, Elephant Sands, Nxai Pans, Makgadigadi and Khama Rhino Sanctuary.
We spent a couple of days in Maun doing a cultural tour and a scenic helicopter flight, as well as a Mokoro trip in the Khwai concession. Vic Falls was an amazing bucket list visit as well as the obligatory sunset cruise from Chobe Safari Lodge. We slept with the elephants at Elephant Sands, but even more so at Nxai Pan. And Kubu Island really is as cool as everyone says it is!
We drove about 3400 kms, had an extremely hot time during the heatwave, bailed out of the Kalahari, learned about the local customs and culture and found a couple of cheetahs! The other Big Five were also ticked off with a lucky lion sighting and a leopard crossed our path. Khama Rhino Sanctuary is just off the charts with the lengths they (have to) go to to protect the rhinos.
The diversity is surprising and unexpected, from the dry and dusty CKGR to the wetlands of Khwai and the tranquility of the Chobe river.
We hope this will inspire and excite you to visit this fascinating, beautiful country!

Great general synopsis 👏
What people do not understand about these old busses is that they are extremely reliable..easy to maintain and unlike most modern camper vans will not cost a fortune if they need replacement parts..
Great idea to put the griddle plate on the hob to diffuse the heat for cooking food that needs to simmer on a low heat for a longer period of time. Thank you for sharing your experience. 😊
Great info - what is your take on the best time of the year to visit Botswana for a self drive? I'm thinking mid/late October - nice and warm, but before the rains start
End of October is a pretty good shout. As a comparison, we went in March which was extremely hot with the heat wave, but low season, super dry, and the campsites were quite empty. We also did a solo week at end of November/December as the rains were starting to pull in - with a number of camps where we were the only ones😊🤘, and we got through Makgadigadi okay at the time (about two inches of mud). When ae were there a few months ago Botswana was still experiencing a heavy drough, so depending on the region you're looking at and if you have a group or solo I would look at October / November timeline👍 Check the booking availability though🤔. Also if it is low- or mid-season, prices can change a lot!
Very interesting video. Thank you. One question: I’d like to know your opinion: if you were a tourist from abroad on a first trip to Botswana would you go to Maun and the Moremi area or would you go to Kasane and the Chobe area? Greetings from Brazil
Thanks for your comment. I enjoyed making this one, Botswana is just such a great place! This is the impossible question! Opinions and preferences are all over the place. I asked Victoria and she answered with Kasane/Chobe, for me it is probably Maun area, but we have different tastes. Some points to think about and what you prefer: Kasane (as mentioned in the video) is a mini version of Maun, but the Chobe river makes for awesome game viewing (on a guided tour or yourself). Victoria Falls is just a short drive away (as a day tour), helicopter flights (like Maun), river cruises, guided town tours, great lodges and a very chilled vibe at the river. Namibia border is just there, and there are various excursions to Zambia and Zimbabwe. However, Okavango (where Maun is the gateway) is considered to be the epicentre of Botswana. For me, the appeal is abundant waterways, animals, diverse areas like savanna, forest, and wetland to discover. It has a bit more 'safari' feel to me, and you can go on a mokoro (which you can't in Kasane), or head to Makgadigadi just a few hours away (a totally different vibe). You also have Khwai area nearby, which is fantastic. Depending on your timeline I would recommend half/half: if you have a week, maybe three or four days in each region, and drive through Chobe from Maun to Kasane. I am not sure this helps you a lot, but I enjoy both areas. An idea is to go onto facebook and ask this question on: Drivebots group. You will get some good, varying opinions and it can help to give you an idea on your route. The best is that is doesn't really matter which area you choose. Both are an amazing snapshot of Botswana and you will experience all the game viewing, safari tours, and local vibe you are looking for. Get out there and discover! Thanks for watching, great to hear some feedback🙏😊

Can we change rubber bushes to steel bushes (fabricàte) to get rid of death wobbles
Imho, no. Just like the transmission, everything is in balance and related to the next part. If you put steel then you transfer the forces to the next part, and then if you stiffen that you transfer to the next (e.g. steel panhard bushes put pressure on the hockey sticks, then the steering damper, then the track rod ends and you move further up the line until something breaks). If you fit OEM bushes they last for a long time anyway. We've had death shake twice in over ten years (two different Defenders) so not a big deal in the big picture. Both times replacing the panhard bushes sorted it, so keep the 'weakest link' right there as it's an easy fix. I think LR got it quite right overall, but that's just my opinion.
I just bought one! Amazon AU!
I keep my in my vehicle when I'm early for a job or having a break I break out the book love it❤

So amazing to experience this wonder of the world 🌍🥰
Great place. The cost for camping Pula at the lodge?
Yep, loved it! I don't have an answer for you for this time (we booked as a group through Ultimate Uoutes) All I have is we paid €27 for a campsite in 2019 (2pax, 1 vehicle), so that's about bwp400. Hope that helps a bit 🤷?
Always great place to visit..what is the cost( Pula for SADC) for camping?
Hi Elsabe, thanks for the comment. I don't have an answer for you because we paid international rates for a group, so I have no idea on SADC rates. Maybe have a look at 'Drivebots' on Facebook they should be able to help. And don't forget conservation fees, vehicle fees, park fees, visitor fees, bed levies etc🤷♂️😅
Was in campsite 5 last week.
fantastic 😊
Surprisingly it also detects r134a refrigerant.
I had to look that up 😅. Pretty good little thing actually 👍
If you think a river cruise doesn't sound very exciting, then this unique experience watching elephants cross the Chobe River from Sedudu Island to the mainland certainly changed all that for us. Read the blog for more inspiration: asimplyfab.life/chobe-safari-lodge/
How many nights was it up? do you have it out camping in it every night or just a few?
We had it up for one year constant (travelling through Europe - as in the other video), then sporadic use for another year. I understand what UV can do, and the elements - I get all that. My disappointment is paying 10x the price of a Quechua, where the Quechua performs the same (and I have had a Quechua out for a whole year as well)...
td5 all the way!

Cheers 🤘😎 (awesome trip, but if we could have done this with Defender, even better)
Hey! What an amazing trip! Thanks for sharing, I’ve been following all the episodes! So cool! My wife and I are heading to Johannesburg at the end of August. We'll spend 5 days in Kruger National Park and then visit the Maun area. Since we decided on this trip a bit last minute, we're going to Botswana without any park reservations. I was thinking of camping near Maun and doing single-day self-drive safaris in the parks. Do you think that’s possible? Or do you need to make reservations well in advance to get into the parks? If you could shed some light on this, I’d be super grateful!
Thanks for your comment ☺️ Sounds great (although I am biased because - Africa!😎🤘). No reservations is risky. It is always busy in Bots and I am not sure if you will get in to Moremi without a campsite booking in advance (although there are stories out there, of course). If you can get accommodation in Maun, an idea is to get a 'day' game drive into Moremi and use Main as your base. I think this question is better answered (and more opinions) on Facebook: DriveBots. On the logistics side I guess you'll be flying from Kruger to Maun? Once again, sounds like a great trip #jealousnotjealous😃😅👍
Hi guys, thanks for naming all the animals most of them I didn't know, also thanks for showing Botswana, it now has become more than a name. I find it ever so cool to see Victoria drive without her hands on the wheel, she's a brave girl. I doubt you could let a Defender steer itself like that, at least in my exoeriance it does'nt work. Take care and have it good friends. Chris.
We were at Savuti in 2013 and had water in the channel
Ah magic. That must have been amazing!😊👌 Both times we were there it was super dry, and sooo hot🥵😅!

Yes! Total lack of respect from these guys... (I won't say where they came from but it is from Europe, and somewhere to the eastern part)
Most cars have fake synthetic learher nowadays. And personally I do not find it particularly appealing... beauty is something more about the lines, the space, the order, the simplicty... and not so much about having leather, gold and diamonds on it. A 2006 Grand Vitara is an example of a good design. Most leather SUVs today are not, including newer versions of the same Vitara. I hate these ridiculous screens... less is more.
The rear seats suggest to be for the leggless among us, although they will have a hard time finding the doorhandles way up there. 🍹🤢 😉

My sister and I made it through IKEA in twenty minutes. We realized it was not really for us, so we just kept following the arrows from beginning to end. We ended up purchasing a cuter outdoor furniture set at Home Goods.
You showed magnificent restraint! I see self drive foreign tourists going off road and I'll stop them and KAK them out from a dizzy height and then report them. That's a good demonstration of the water-tightness of the awning, but of course you never want that much water to build up, there. Why do I never see the awning set up at 3/4 or 2/3 or 1/2 height? Seems to me you'd want that option for heavy rain, to keep from creating a lake up there. The only concession to that I've seen in all the photos and videos is running an anchor line from the middle of the far edge of the awning down to the ground, to create a spillway. But the poles at the corners are always at full extension. I would think that a cowboy in foul weather would want his brim pulled low. I wonder if the tight zipper is a result of pulling something too tight, somewhere else on the tent. Like maybe you should zip that door closed before anchoring one or more of the corners... Just a thought. I'm not even sure he had any stakes in the ground when he was showing the tight zipper. But thinking about the mechanics of setup, you kind of can't zip it closed until the tent's stood up and the hinges in the walls are locked in place. It may just be a design flaw that doesn't cause a problem, because they make a good zipper! Just in my experience, whenever I had something like that crop up, it was a user error on my part. But maybe it's just a smidge off in the cutting or stitching of the fabric that got past quality control. LOL! I'll see myself out!
Cheers for the comment(s) Yes, the zipper is only tight right at that spot, so I suspect a stitching error. But it held up fine all year long. The front awning section (with the modular panels) has no option except to set it up with the corner poles at max to get the side panels taut. So there's no real way to get a water runoff🤷♂️ Bit of a shame because the basic overall quality is there
I NEED ONE OF THOSE, HOW DO I ORDER TO GET ONE TO CAPE TOWN SOUTH AFRICA ?
