  • 2 Kings 17-18 - The Fall of the Northern Kingdom
Watershed Sunday School - Pastor Matt Pierson
Chapter 17 of 2 Kings introduces us to Hoshea, who presides over the fall of Israel in the year 722 B.C. Verse 7 tells us exactly why Israel was carried off into exile: “And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharoah king of Egypt, and had feared other gods.”
Chapter 18 introduces us to Hezekiah, king of Judah, who “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that David his father had done.”
In these two chapters, we see contrasts between these two kings: Hoshea, who was less evil than some of his predecessors, nevertheless saw Israel fall. And Hezekiah, who was strong and righteous like King David, nevertheless saw circumstances move against him. These chapters continue to point us to the need for a savior, and to the covenantal faithfulness of a good God who keeps his promises.
