The BMW 850CSi Is Still The Ultimate Dream Car

  • Join us this week as we venture into the ultimate retro techno-toy: BMW’s 8-Series. In order to pay proper tribute to the king of rapid luxury, we’ve tracked down Taylor Patterson’s pristine example of the line-topping, limited-production 850CSi.
    While BMW was revealed to have been making a bonafide go at an M8 variant of the big grand touring coupe back in the early ‘90s-and in fact the company’s sole box-flared beast of a prototype still exists, complete with carbon-fiber wheel covers-that car never made it to the masses, or at least to that portion with the taste and means to acquire such a car that would have likely carried an MSRP somewhere in the Ferrari territory it was aimed at.
    Luckily for those people though, M still left some incriminating fingerprints on the 8-Series. The result was an unmatched vessel of prowess that they simply called the 850CSi.
    At the time of its reveal in 1992, the peer group for this car was almost nonexistent, and on a more abstract scale, there have been very few in its wake to attempt a similar blend of substance and poise. It never claimed to be a sporty coupe, yet it could outperform many of them. The car’s true domain however was a lengthy trip with the room to show off how comfortable 100+MPH can be; this was the kind of car whose essence was understated, yet its presence never went unnoticed.
    Though any form of the E31 chassis was and is a genuine rarity, the CSi stood even further apart. At the time, this was the end-all, be-all, the award-winning stew of a high-tech ecosystem paired to a taut motor that could push the impressive package well past the imposed safety speed threshold of 155 MPH. Further boosting the desirability of the CSi model was the inclusion of special staggered forged M-System wheels with the distinctive “throwing star” bladed covers, a more robust and direct suspension, extra interior options, and a host of upgrades to the exterior paneling, as is the fashion for cars with the M treatment.
    It was a truly special car, and its production run reflected that. Exorbitantly expensive, and unable to continue production in line with updated emissions standards, only 1,510 units of the model were produced the world over. And to add enthusiast clout to such rarity, each of these cars came fitted with a six-speed transmission bolted to the back of a 5.6-liter V12 stamped with the fastest letter in the alphabet.
    The 380-horsepower heart that resides under the hood of every CSi has an interesting family history, and can claim to this day its title as the rarest production engine in a BMW road car. In a reversal of the typical German logic, BMW’s M-tuned and -built motors will often trade their “M” designation for that of an “S.” Such is the case with the S70B56 found in the CSi. Variations of this motor-which was essentially a pair of straight-sixes fused together-would go on to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans outright, in both the McLaren F1 GTR, and in BMW’s own V12 LMR.
    Too often the 8-Series is categorized in that group consisting of once-expensive luxury cars that are now prohibitively costly to maintain, and so are left to wallow, undriven. Sure, it checks a lot of those boxes (the V12 E31s have an ECU per half-dozen pistons, which is just a piece of the massive amount of interconnected systems in this car that required the creation of a bespoke network to operate), but somehow it just doesn’t belong in the dealer lots full of S-Classes with all their trick bits already broken. Perhaps the 840Ci automatic that’s been given a hard life is beyond the rational point of saving, but cars like Taylor’s immaculately displayed CSi prove that the time when these cars become “dated” is still a long ways off yet.
    It’s understandable that one can look at something like the 850CSi and mistakenly view it as a compromise between two worlds, as an object somewhere on the muddled boundary between the disciplines of Motorsport and luxuriant indulgence. Of course it lives at such a meeting point, but the very fact that it does bring together these disparate worlds into a coherent package is the evidence that the last thing at play in a car like this is compromise.
    Revisiting what made the first E31 a high watermark for the burgeoning world of luxury GTs in the 1990s makes us supremely excited for the modern interpretation of the flagship Ultimate Driving Machine, but no matter what comes next, the 850CSi will always be significant for what it stands for, and how good it looks doing so.

      I once drove a Lotus Super Seven...a dream I'll tell you.
      Hmm it's not an easy question for me too but I'm going with two cars.
      1. 1969 Charger 440 rt
      2. 1st gen Viper RT GTS in silver with blue stripes.
      As soon as my brother stormed into our sleeping room when I was young I immediately got hooked by the Charger from Fast and Furious. I know sounds stupid but I saw one on a car meet and I swear my heart stopped in that moment:) Didn't have the balls to go up to it though:(
      And the Viper because of a poster on the wall from my brother in our room again.
      When I got to sleep and when I woked up I saw that car:)
      Hmm...I mean I was always into Corvettes too...
      But affordable wise I'll go with a BMW E34 M5. first car was an E34.

The E34 is just a staple and a future classic. You should get one and keep it! They'll retail for a lot in a near future.

      A shame they did a new 8-series...
      THE 8-series, like seen in the video, was a one of a kind BMW model, there was only one generation of it! It made it such a special model!
      A now... It's the "old one"...
      Fucked up!

      Imagine my excitement when hearing about the neo 8 series dropping. Aaaaaaand then the utter disappointment when it was unveiled. They completely missed or yet had forgotten the one thing that set this car apart from the rest. It's uniqueness. The neo 8 series has not even the slightest bit of resemblance to it predecessor. Just another BMW mold with an 8 badge.

    • @maritimemisfits3360
      @maritimemisfits3360 Před 6 lety

      The Supra is not that fast stock, less than 300HP and a boat. However, if you have driven a 90's Toyota sports coupe, you would know they may not be quick, but you will never need to touch the brakes. The way they handle right to the limit is so predictable yet wild. Even a FWD 6th gen Celica will out corner cars way out of it's league.

    Back in 1997 i was born, and first car toy i got in the same year was a white BMW 850CSi, i was way to young to know anything, i played a lot with it. Couple of years later as i started getting more and more toy cars i kind of forgot on my 850CSi and it was just one of hundred cars i had until i was about old enough to get more in dept about cars. My dad opened a Honda dealership and i was all into JDM culture back in the days, and just who wasn't. And one day i open my box with car collection and i find my very first car, the white BMW 850CSi, a bit rusty and old but still realy cool looking car. I started remembering it and got even mad at myself for forgeting such a magnificent car. I fell in love with that car just by looking at the toy. I ask my dad about the car, he tells me about it but not that much. My dad loved the cars but not as much as i did, and still do, so he did not give me any important info on the car. I sit down on my computer and do a research about the car. I fell in love with it but even then i couldn't find much on it becouse of it's rarity, but i knew in depth of my heart that this is the car i want one day. Lot of years passed i started studying and moved to capital, and then one day when i was going back home from my university i see nothing less but dark green Alpine B12. I stoped breathing and started enjoying the moment, felt like i'm having a very short conversation with the machine. It went by me and i was speachless. Just that one moment, those few seconds felt so mesmerizing, never felt such joy and happiness in my life. 2 years after that i was going back to my birthplace town, and as i was driving back took the rout behind the BMW dealership, becouse of the roadworks, and as i was passing by i drive by nothing less but white BMW 850Ci. I stoped my Dodge Caliber behind it. I was just sitting there looking at it and promising myself that one day she will be mine, one day i will drive the BMW 850 from 90's. After about 2 minutes i start the engine on my car and leave with tears of joy and sadness in my eyes. To this day i still have my toy BMW 850CSi, and hopefully in near future both the toy and i will be sitting in a real thing.

      Your story really shows the difference between a normal person and a petrolhead. A normal person is willing to work hard to get that dream car he wants because he wants to go really fast, have quad zone climate control, sit in heated leather seats and so on. For a petrolhead, the car he wants from the bottom of his heart may not be the fastest, the most modern and high-tech and the most luxurious. A dream car for a petrolhead is pieces metal, rubber and glass put together in a marvelous way. A car that will make his stomach and heart do acrobatics inside his body when he sees it in the real world. My journey to that one car has recently begun, I hope yours ends soon!

      This was a huge deal but got panned in the press at the time. It was only when the 840 came out that I started to see a lot more of them. Never saw an 850 CSI in the flesh, but did see Alpina derivatives. It is the only car that elicits a positive response from the most anti car people I know. The shape is truly something special, something that makes people think outside their norm. In time, I think it will be celebrated as much as an F40 or Miura.

      All E31 are basically the same cars except for the engine, suspension, spoilers, RW mirrors and the rear wheel steering. The 6-speed manual was available on all models, although rare. I've driven my 850CSi since 1996 for 160000 kms/100000 mls, often in ridiculous speeds for long periods, and it has never let me down while driving. I doubt that any Italian sports car would have been that reliable.
      Granted, some small things are quirky, they all eat batteries, the seat handles break, the manifold intake gasket will fail (on all V12:s of that period - S70/M73) and the BMW computer in the shop won't see it so they change four lambda sensors before they figure it out, and the clutch is model specific for the CSi. And the headlight assembly, well, you might want to install separate DRL:s. But it's a heavily overengineered car made in small numbers, so some glitches are to be expected. All in all a CSi won't give you a lot of trouble for such a competent car. YMMV.

      Josh Kaemmerer Ehhhh, not really feeling that front end. I saw the 8 series concept a few days ago, and what immediately stuck out to me was how much it resembled an Aston Martin. The old 8 series was distinct. I still think the new 8 series looks amazing, but something about the old one was just so distinctly BMW. Its very much a subjective thing, so I won't say that one looks better than the other. Just the new one hasn't struck out to me and many others as the older one did, but again, thats not to say that this new car won't be great too.

    I love the fact that the 850 CSi was totally unrestricted and could do 189 MPH. That is a super car today, let alone when it was first launched. In a word fantastic. I think you should have the minor paint work done, it will make you enjoy it even more.

    • @moviebod
      @moviebod Před 7 lety

      Covert yes quite possibly, but I am sure they could solve a simple overheating problem. My 1991 M5 can do 160 and I think the only problem was the back windows could not open at high speed so they beefed up the window motors.

      Lincoln Mark 8 w/Ford 32v DOHC V8 with a small mod could do almost that speed. It is in the same generation as this car. It had a land speed record. That engine has a few land speed records. That engine can also easily see 250k with basic maintenance. I have one with over 200K and it just has a bit of oil sweating.

When we first started it a couple months ago, I nearly cried of happines. We still have a lot of work to go, but this thing is absolutely insane. Hopefully next year, I can drive it like new. So was the 2008 Ford GT when it was new, but as production went on things improved. Huge example the 84 Pontiac Fiero 4 cylinder engine. Not the best design for GM at the time however when they inset the 2.8 liter v6 things improved drastically over time. And yes I still own and 88 GT it's one of those experiences you either get and understand or look at it and and ask WHY?.

    • @aserta
      @aserta Před 7 lety +4

      As far as i'm concerned, a small portion at the tail end of the 80s and a slim two years on the 2000s yielded some of the most iconic, some of the most loved, some of the most amazing cars in car history. IF not, then at the very least, it is the most homogeneous and most complex car era. And it's clear why. We, were still dreamers, we still thought we'd jump in a ready made space ship and go travel the solar system. Everything was just that brighter, and in that light, we made these amazing cars, which, until history shows us otherwise, we won't have the same feeling for other cars, ever again.
