It's because the Mood Compass around Mikey's neck attracted to the clips/wires that Gretchen put on his face; the magnet of the compass attracted to the metal clips, adding more weight into the wires which increased the calculations, falsely determining that he'd grow to be 50 ft. Obviously Gretchen would probably know that it's almost impossible to grow to be that tall but due to the weight added from the compass through the clips attached to his face, (which Gretchen didn't know he was wearing at first) the calculations included that additional weight and therefore, the calculations were correct but if Mikey wasent wearing the compass, the calculations would show a more accurate, real height (although he is pretty tall already)

Mikey Blumberg is the largest and tallest member of the Recess Gang, having a large and chubby appearance. He is big, tall and muscular, like Gelman and Eric Foster. Even the sixth graders are tall as well.
But if Mikey was really gonna be 50 feet tall, he would definitely be the next Hulk with Cornchip Girl as Betty Ross. And also, Clarisse Henderson would definitely be the next She-Hulk as well.
