  • Marc Lamont Hill sits down with Dr. Greg Carr, Department of Afro -American Studies at Howard University, to talk about Nikole Hannah-Jones joining the iconic HBCU after turning down a tenured position at UNC.
Carr and Hill applaud the move and the challenges that Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
“Some of the most brilliant scholars, teachers and thinkers are at historically Black colleges and universities,” Carr says. “The challenges we face are, there’s a disrespect of faculty by administrators that’s not just [at] white schools, we see it at Black schools.”

Now yes I know that some are just as are even more and they are there for reasons other than being accepted. I also purposely didn't use and compare any HBCUs. I also know that there are some if not many exceptions but let's not pretend that a school I'm not gonna name that's a HBCU in N.C student body are as "able minded" as the student body in V.A and that's okay. Thanks to racism our schools in neighborhoods where black and brown live hasn't taught prepared cared or educated us so you will have numbers of kids that just weren't taught so they never learned so they cant possibly be as "sharp" as black and brown kids who went to better h.s middle class and upper class education systems. You are one of those brown and black commenters that think Black Americans should be grouped in. We built this country. Not the yellow, not the brown,, not the POC. Black Americans. Naming others that haven’t experienced what we have takes away from our focus. Stray away from that rhetoric.

@@busterdouglasiii3838 The United States of America was built off of the backs, from the blood, and from the lives lost of those who were kidnapped by the same evil who today is still standing on backs to get higher. None of any of the generations of rascits can claim that they built this thing. To even try to build on their own is ridiculous because the foundation is millions of black and brown bodies all over the planet.

Howard University has a new professor, with a shelf life. Ms Jones deals in fiction and fiction themed literature, falls out of favor.

Sounds like a bit of envy and jealousy…crabs in a barrel discussion. Don’t hate on Tanehisi and Nikole because their names WILL bring attention to HBCUs that have struggled tremendously in recent years as more students of color flock to PWI (predominately white institutions)!! I hope Ms. Hannah-Jones doesn’t go from contending with racism at UNC to jealousy at Howard!!!

Dr. Carr has been vocal about issues with HBCUs becoming more classist and the focus being more capitalistic. What he is saying has nothing to do with Jones and Coates. He is speaking about changes at Howard.

It is not jealousy but educating people about how academia works and managing expectations of students who will come to schools because of popular professors as Dr. Carr said very clearly. Please do not try to instigate. Signed, H.U. grad
