Have you tried crossing potatoes with tomatoes and tomatoes with potatoes ? It would be interesting to see if the seeds of the tomatoes crossed with potatoes actually would give tubers with edible fruit.

@@somethingboutgardening9532 You can graft a tomato onto a potato though, and it will grow both spuds in the ground and tomatoes above ground!
I just planted potatoes for the first time this year in my 10x20 city yard. I used seed potatoes. Then! Gasp! What is this thing growing? A tomatoes? Enter: your video! OMG I got seeds! Woot! Can't wait. LOVE your enthusiasm. Lol I could watch you do just about anything. Thanks for sharing!

Nature is so amazing. The amount of food you get for a tiny grain sized seed. And you get a new variety of potato. Brilliant stuff. I am going to try this next year after I get my berries this year. I missed it last year as I had no idea what the hell they were lol.

I have 3 but to much heat it rejected them soo im waiting for the next set of flowers.

I ❤ this!!! For almost 3 years now I've been experimenting with growing food from store bought produce. I planted some sprouted store bought potatoes, grew them on, harvested them. Yield was not impressive. I selected the best potatoes from those to be used as seed potatoes for the next round and they have absolutely taken off! I now have TSP berries forming (didn't get any with the first crop) which I'm going to grow on to see what I get😁 I've also been experimenting with scooping the eyes out of potatoes I eat and growing those on. Just started that experiment at Christmas and so far 100% of the scooped potato eyes I popped into the dirt and put on the windowsill have grown on and are beginning to leaf out. I've been gardening for decades but never grown potatoes from TPS mostly because the 'establishment' discourages it but I'm super excited to try😁

Of course I'm watching my favourite Canadian gardener ;) I was looking forward to your TPS video all summer long! What a great harvest!
First quick advice on storage is to eat all the small marble sized ones. Now. The gardener deserves a little meal for all the work and they would not keep anyways.
There also is a small chance that tps grown potatoes might contain levels of solanine that are no good - those taste bitter and should not be eaten. So far I only had 1 bitter one ever, the risk is small, but better check now before keeping them and growing X plants of it next year.
The seed potatoes for the storage I pack into paper bags as they are (unwashed), label the bag and place them in a cool dark area. Garage, cellar, shed - anywhere where mice can't reach them and where temperatures stay between 5-10C. The air humidity should not be bone dry (they dry out) and not too wet (they rot). You could even put them into the fridge, but then I recommend sealing the bag and putting a big sign on them 'do not eat or you become compost fodder' lol so no one will make quick lunch from your seed potatoes.
A monthly check of the bags during the winter is a good thing, to pick out rotten ones so they can't spoil the others.
That's all I can think of right now :) but a storage video is still on top of my to do list.

This is literally the only video i have found that actually starts from seed and not from seed potatoes somemore info on why my potatoes produce seed pods and how/when to plant actual potatoe seeds rather than sets or seed potatoes would be great and im sure it would pick up some traction on the youtube algorithm

Now that is fantastic my friend, superb results probably beyond your wildest expectations. The storing part is one of interest to me, fortunately I see that Torp has replied so that will be the next thing I read. Thumbs up buddy. I haven't dumped the Sarpo's I received from Adam yet but I'll be over the moon if I get half as many as you did :-)
Way beyond my expectations buddy!! Man I so want these to make it to even close to Spring and I'll put them in containers and then in the greenhouse under poly if I have to. Torp rocks...that is all. I can't wait to see how they do for you, hope it's a bumper crop. Either way, you should have more to plant next year than at the start of this year:))

A very nice result there. The Sarpo Mira I know are the Red ones. They have a good reputation for blight resistance, so grown as long as the plants stay alive here. Enjoyed the follow-through from seed to harvest. Nick's plants look very strong still. If they flower you might get your own seed apples on them.
I am more than tickled! That's what I thought regarding the sarpos. Nick's shall stay in the ground for hopefully a month yet. Only 2 weeks to first frost pal!!

That is fantastic, Ryan. So great to see your seed potatoes succeed!! Looked pretty good to me. I shall now be looking to you for more "expert" advice on potatoes!! We applied the information you passed on in your videos about potting on tomato seedlings to speed up root formation (ie when you put them in even deeper than usual) for our woodland strawberries (yeah I know they're not tomatoes or potatoes - but thought why not try it with strawberries too?!) and it seems to have worked! So if that worked - I might give potato seeds a go to - since I don't have much success with normal seed potatoes! You have done well - it's great to see such enthusiasm and excitement!

Finally got me some TPS from my own berries last year. I’m guessing salad blue babies, as I hear they’re a super fertile variety, but they were growing right next to Yukon gold and highland red, so you never know, could be my very own mongrel variety. Just sowed them yesterday and super excited to see them start to sprout 😁

Hello, well today I got excited ! not pee in my pants excited but excited :) In all my time I have never seen anyone grow Potatoes from seeds and I was impressed. so do you have a video of collecting the seeds ? I know my Potatoes produce a flower and seed pods but I have never collected them. This is why I like CZcams sometimes I learn something new :)

This is the first year I've noticed my potatoes producing fruit after flowering, so I saved some to grow new varieties with! It's so difficult to find reliable information about this process, thank you for your timeline of events and the enthusiasm with which you present your results.

I just planted some TPS and I was wondering how often do you water them and how much water? Also, how about once you pot the sprouts? For now, I left the planted seeds outside but I noticed you had them indoors.. any advice? I live in California. Big thanks!
Hey friend! I would just make sure the soil is moist, and they should be fine. No plants like being really dry, and spuds especially. I am in Canada so I needed to have them indoors, but in Cali they should be fine outside if there is no frost. Best of luck, keep me posted;))
I have a sand botton part of my basement. I place the potatoes in the sand where it stays cool and dark (above freezing). The o es I want to plant are placed in a brown paper bag sometime in late Feb. I plant mine the beginning of April outside directly. Best wishes, Jeff

Interesting video, thank you! Can you explain - how does cross-polination affect the tubers?
Basically, with cross pollination you are getting some of the genes of both the mother and father plants. From there, the tubers will be a mix of both parents, and a new variety.
@@Mrsnufleupagus After I poster this comment, it came to me that you meant the crossing of the parental plants of these seeds, but initially I thought you meant that the tuber-producing plants cross pollinating each other gave different shapes of tubers and that initial misunderstanding is what made me confused :D

From what Ive seen of UK gardens Sarpos are small, but that was a rather good harvest! Have you grown other potatoes in that box to compare yields with?
Never grown TPS let alone seed spuds in those boxes. Don't know buddy but I'm thrilled with the results:)

A little dirt never hurt it has been cold and rainy here for days. I am happy for the 1/2” of rain, but not ready for the October temps. Hopefully we all get a nice long, warm autumn after this cold snap.
I use a mix of water peroxide,and em 1 in my spray bottle and it's like magic nice job

6 months give or take. They are slow growing so starting early is recommended:)
I've been growing a lot of the ones from the grocery store that we kept too long for the last several years. This year, I'm going to save the seeds to see what I can pull out of the genetics gacha. That is, if my chickens don't eat the berries (they have before, and scared the living hell out of me)

I think potatoes were the first thing I ever tried growing. After the first success, I couldn’t believe I had been throwing those sprouting potatoes in the garbage for years… it’s literally free food and easy. So easy that a funny thing happened this past year… I had one that looked so rotted that I just threw it in the yard… guess what? I went to mow the lawn and discovered it growing potatoes in my lawn! Never even buried it!!!
Anyway, I got some TPS seeds this past year also and have been interested in possibly planting them. I already have red, blue and yellow potatoes growing in my basement while it’s still snowing here in Buffalo lmfao.

What did you do with the seed POD? Did you dry it out to get the seeds? Did you cut it open when it was green and dry the seeds out?

Well done Ryan #SarpoMiraSeedPotatoes my experiment is in its second year and the potatoes that I stored were left covered in dry, slightly damp compost, but with the amount you have then try different methods to edge you bets on them getting to your second year. You definitely got more than me in the first year and what a good size, looking forward to my reveal.

Sorry for the late reply, markets have been busy. I would only start them if you had some great lights to move them to come fall. They are slow growing and need all the time they can to get some first seed spuds. It's a two year project to really let it play out:))

I noticed that the first year the growth was very slow. Please keep me posted aas now you have my curiosity up!! Don't forget some simple cover can extend you through aa few light frosts:))

I waited until the TPS berry had dried up a bit. Why don't you try both ways, fresh and aged a bit? No it doesn't need a year, that's for sure:))

No, it takes months
From what I heard it’s an extra 2-4 weeks compared to planting from tubers. potatoes are from the Andes so they need to form tubers quick!
I work on a sees potato farm in Australia
If u want to store them keep them below 16° should stop them from sprouting but u should try to store them at 8°-12°c
The potatoes will get bigger and better shaped with each seed potato generation it takes 4 or 5 generation or clone potatoes to get the shape n size
5 years n u should have a nice bid round high yielding potato

Whazzup Nate? Those little bringers of joy were started on Jan 09/18, so 7.5 months, and with water and no freeze probably almost 9 months. All depends what your soil is like. The raised bed is made by me and my compost, so perhaps it's looser and more nutrient rich than the ground, which around here is so much hard clay. Have a good one bro:))

Can i do this in June? Impossible to buy a main crop in France! We grew earlies.
They do grow slowly, but I'd think you could give it a try as It is FAR warmer there than in Canada!!

Unless you have wild potatoes growing in your woods, you'd have to buy them:)
I'd want to try one of each to make sure they're even worth growing before growing a whole crop of them.

They can be started in Jan as they take a long time to grow. Just be sure to pot them up and give them room!

Depends on the climate pal. If you live in a warm area you could just seed them outdoors. The way I did it, they were inside for 5 months.

I have had a computer crash or two since then. I grew them on the next year and got a bit bigger spuds and more of them. Moved farms and they got lost in the mix. I have a fresh batch of seeds and will start over again:))

How long from start to potatoes? I’m in NW Florida and have seeds to start
It's kind of a 2 year deal. The first year will make tiny potatoes, then the next year you plant those for a main crop.

Potatoes and tomatoes belong to the same Solanaceae family. Their stems will grow roots once they touch the soil. While we should hill our potatoes when they are growing up, we need to let our tomatoes fall to the ground so that their stems can touch the ground and start to root. Potatoes and tomatoes are both perennials in their own zones. Potatoes can be overwintered in the ground in as cold as zone 3 or even lower depending on your variety. If you simply put some back into your raised beds, they will come back next year at about the right time. If they come up too early, some of the leaves will be frost killed and turn black. But they will always come back in a week or so. You can also store your potatoes in some moist peat moss in the garage. They will start to root fairly quickly. But they will only sprout when the temperature gets above about 40F. So, if you don't want your garage potatoes to sprout too early, keep them dry in some dry peat moss. Then start to give them some water a couple of weeks before you want to plant them out. But keeping your potatoes in the ground to overwinter is the best choice.

Hello my Northern Neighbour!! You know, last year I keep all the tiddlers in the crisper in the garage, and I had 75% make it, and I planted them at the farm. Got a half bucket in return from rock ground, so I was surprised. I will split them between the crisper and the in laws cold room and see what I can do, lol. I am seeing me planting in buckets way too early:)))

I just got potatoe seeds from Amazon. I thought they would be tubers but they were actual seeds like yours. Am I to late in the game now? It’s may 22 here in Ontario Canada the day to start planting
You can start them now, and still get a harvest by the end of Fall.

I wonder why it is so hard to get potato seeds and when then they are really expensiv (but cheap when compared to certain hemp seeds) but I guess they are far less fertile.
I have only saved the berries, so no clue on price.
