Quansheng UV-K5 firmware "how to" to add USB and expand frequency range 18MHz to 1300MHz

This is not a definitive how to, but how it worked for me.
Included is where to get a programming cable, where to get the firmware files and how to upload to your Quansheng UV-K5
This should also work for K5(8) & K6
I got the cable (that works for me) from Ebay seller g0oyq-steve. I am not affiliated in any way with this seller. But his cable works for me.
For the firmware files, I use the files section of the Facebook Group "Quansheng UV-K5 UK Users"
The interface I use is the Web based UVMOD site.
You will need Chrome browser. I couldn't get it to work with Edge or Firefox.

I recomment the egzumer mod. Way more options, like frequency and channel name together in the display and the spectrum Analyser. Great video, thank you.

I'm having difficulty identifying which group you are in Facebook. I searched for "Quansheng UV-K5 UK Users". I suspect its this private one since you are a member "Quansheng Radio UK Users Group"

Thank you for your excellent video, yes the UVMOD is the only programming software which works easily on a MacBook. I was changing the mods looking at what they do with my radio and managed to stop it from working. Fortunately the stock firmware unbricked it. It is a shame but I cannot make it transmit on the legal 27/81 band despite its limitations but I have a CB radio for that anyway.
But if you have the latest mod (which it seems) you could go to the hidden menu of the radio, then goto "F-Unlock" and set the all transmit, but it is as you say, that the radio emits a lot of harmonics, so just better to keep transmit on the "legal" frequencies, - thanks for the group info! 73, Levi in Sweden

yeah it's a great scanner! The spectrum analyser mod is great! If you dabble in the CB band... a President Lincoln II+ is the way to go, it's meant for those bands, gives you 35+ watts and gives you some noise blanking options.
I've had plenty of the Lincoln Mk1 rigs. I like them.
But I don't do CB or 11m any more.
Why's that is ssb with 27 MHz in better condition

The NOAA WX Freq mod is for those outside the USA actually. It allows you to change what freq it monitors.
Good call. I assumed NOAA was USA only.
Apparently there is a mod that changes noaa mode to a frequency equaliser, I am waiting for a reply but will keep you updated..

No reason. Other than I was happy with the result.
The bin files aren't intuitive to me. I just trawl through them until I find one I like.
Hi, hope you can help me. I bought a Quansheng UV K5 from Ali Express. Device works good, but in the Frequency Range from 350-399.975Mhz it is not possible to send. When i push the Send Button in this range, the Display shows "TX-Disable".
I thought a firmware update on egzumer would solve the problem, but I still can't transmit in this frequency band. What could I do to fix this?

i like the mod yuve done,however im not really bother about useing the expansion freq as a scanner.is it possible to turn them off on the radio,are chirp soft ware,just want 2mtrs 7o cm,.im a radio am dont want truble,thanks foir replying.i want to use ssb on 2 and 70cm.will tx there

Great tutorial.... but...is the egzumer firmware also available elsewhere? (I do not have Facebook)
If you Google Egzumer 0.17 you should get multiple hits for the bin file.
I've not actually used one from elsewhere specifically myself, sorry.
Do you know the radio firmware file size as sold? My point is, will the update overwrite an existing applet and cause losing a function that is standard on the radio. Thank you. I was wondering what to do with my new K6.
You can always roll back to an earlier firmware if you don't like the new setup.
But I don't think you lose anything each upgrade.
Thanks so much for instructions! In my case my radio appears as COM4 or COM5 usually, I select this on the Updater tool and when I click “connect” it says “Error Info: A device which doesn’t exist was specified.”

Hi Mark great tutorial but I'm falling at the first hurdle. Can't get the windows driver for the cable. The small disc comes with beofeng etc. but no quansheng. Hope you can help.
The driver will be for the cable chipset not the radio brand.
Which cable do you have? You need to get the driver for that.
Have you tried adding any of the preset options in addition to the bin file?
Not yet. I'm just at the curiosity stage. I found the spectrum scope using F & 5 though.

Got my radio patched via chrome. Making sure the patch cable was firmly connected on the radio was key. Then was able to use my Baofeng UV5R prepper csv file into CHIRP to get that uploaded into the UV K5(8). Now I have all the channels I need, weather frs etc. THANK YOU. Had to remove some offset settings on my csv file.
after reading your comment I pushed my cable in harder and it flashed. Thanks!
Side note, if you're having trouble with offsets, I've come to the conclusion that I had some flakey firmware. All good now. Remember if you brick it, you can usually still do the power button thingy to get the radio flashed again.
This radio is also the ra 79, correct? Will this firmware work with that radio as well
I have no idea about the RA79. Sorry.
I had something weird happen doing this. During the flash, the computer went blue screen and crashed, and the radio appeared bricked, as turning it off and on did not turn on the screen or radio and it appeared dead. But, I unplugged data cable, and re-started everything, and loaded the patch back up, plugged in the cable, turned it on with the ptt button in, and I got the flashlight/prgramming mode back. I Flashed it again, and this time it "took", and works fine. Hope this helps if this happens to you.
Sounds like an OS or computer HW crash that corrupted the radio software rather than the radio causing it.

Radio is set up correctly, & I'm using a Baofeng UV-5R cable so it should work. Any suggestions/info appreciated! Thanks....
Hi, does this f"ware upgrade work via Ubuntu with say Chromium ( chrome based ) Browser do you know ?
It should work with Chrome on Linux platforms.

After updating unlock 18-1300, from stock firmware 31, and using RSSI bar 78, why does the LCD sometimes give an error when we PTT (freq 142) and also sometimes go blank, finally I restarted it back to normal. I tried again on uvmod with firmware 26, unlock 18-1300 and rssi bar 78, still the same symptoms as above. Does anyone experience something like me?
Followed all the steps and althought the uvmod reports the patch was successful, nothing changes on the handset, any ideas?
There should be changes in the menu such as one called Demod. You can switch to USB there. Can you do that?

Great video, followed all instructions carefully, but after pressed menu button and the menu wasn't there. Also a icon showing DWR. Don't know what that is.
DWR is dual watch receive
Two options:
- DW receive both, but TX on active VFO
- DWR receive both, TX temporarely on receiving VFO
Does it badly affect the recieve sensortivity on recieve by getting wide fregency capacities
The same on 2m/70cm.
But due to a lack of BPF out of band you will get splatter and breakthrough.
For some reason I cannot find that Facebook group, I’ve typed it exactly but nothing!

Is there a firmware that allows you to talk in QSO on 27 MHz?
There is, but it is not recommendable as TX Power is very less and harmonics are inadmissible. SSB is not possible. TX power on 27 MHZ is 228 Microwatts only and this is more ore less nothing.
I've tried this over and over again for 2 days and no luck. It just says "No data received, is the radio connected and in flash mode? Please try again."
Make sure it's in data mode before connecting the cable. Push PTT while turning it on. The light should come on. Then connect cable ensuring it's really firmly pushed in.
