Leaving The Dock in My 30 ft Sailboat!

  • My journey finally begins! After a long day of getting the boat ready to go I am finally able to shove off and begin my trip! It was super windy though! 14-15 knots of wind so backing out was not as smooth as I wanted it to be. The gust of wind right as I was backing out caused my boat to turn to the opposite way I was driving so instead of doing a power struggle with the wind I work with the wind. Once I saw the gust hit the boat I switches my plan and turned the wheel the other way. Turning with the wind allowed me to straighten out the boat and then reverse out of the finger. Not my best time leaving the dock but we did okay and didn't hit any other boats so thats a success! Before I start on my journey I also needed to do the dirty job, have you ever seen the movie RV? thats what I think of every time I pump out. hilarious! but its a dirty job and its got to be done. Its adorable to look back at the footage and watch how much maui follows me around the boat. I love that pup so much. After pumping out I head out of the harbor and its quite choppy and bouncy as you can see by the footage it looks like my boat is on a trampoline at times. I tried something new so you guys would be able to hear the sound of the boat hitting the waves and didn't put music over those clips, let me know if you like those clips! I think they add to the experience and it feels like you're actually on the boat! getting around the bend I have a long sunset sail into Newport. In the next video we will be finishing the sunset sail and heading into newport and anchoring. I am really glad I got my dinghy together, on the bridle tow lines, and was able to go, so far it works great! If you made it to the bottom of the description, please leave me a comment and let me know because I will respond to you!

You're brave. Solo is no small deal. I just moved aboard and scared as hell to take it out alone. Just figuring out how to live on it is a challenge. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It's a love hate relationship. Becoming more love. But for sure there's a learning curve. I really am impressed with how you're dealing with it. Happy and alive.

Well done tieing up to the pump out dock and masterful job getting off it. 10-12 knots makes it much tougher than you made it look. Why not go to the 3 mile mark and use your macerator instead of going to the pump out station? Stay safe my friend.

I put wheels on the back of my dink and what a difference it makes. I got the smaller plastic kind so it does not go through sand very well. If you go through a lot of sand get the larger rubber wheels.

Here is how I feel when I sail. When I initially go out, I have the biggest butterflies in my stomach and I get really nervous. Then when I am out, I get super nervous when I start heeling. About 30 minutes in, the nerves go away, but there are some moments of nerves. When I am on my way back, I start feeling like I want to keep going. When I get on land, I wish I were back sailing and think back, why was I nervous!

As someone who used to live in So. Cal. I can't help but think of how nice it would be to be able to just get in a boat and sail up and down the coast. With such a great view and even if you are moving at a slow and steady pace, at least you are moving. It's been a while since I drove in that traffic, but I can imagine it would be bumper-to-bumper and take several hours just to go 30 miles. Not to mention the toll it takes on your nerves, probably shortening your life. Whereas a nice ride on a boat would probably add to your peace of mind, thus making the extra time it takes all the much better. Safe travels and may the wind be in your favor.

It is a great feeling being out on water without a motor. Not easy to sail. First time I sailed was in NY by statute of liberty. Then sailed on Chesapeake Bay, and now on Lake Michigan in Chicago. Have great sunsets over the city. Lights of city are great too. Would love to try sailing in Bahamas or Greece someday
