Matt is like your best friend who’s always encouraging you to do drugs except it’s buying more synths.
😂
Both can be bad if you don't have much money
Lol,! or "Just a few shots of absynth, don't be a killjoy" Bad friends!
When your Jupiter 8 becomes your stand for your Elektron, while playing your Prophet 10, You know you've made it...
Yeah, it's a gen1 Octatrack. I don't picture Matt being an Octatrack type of guy. He's more of a player. Love to hear his thoughts one day on the OT. Here it's just a drum machine.
I believe he said once that the Jup was actually borrowed.
@@adnana7918 In the synth world, "borrow" basically means... "It's mine now" 😂
He is in Jamiroquai. Cut him some slack for being talented and chummy enough to get into a band that pays as well as they do 😉
@@station2station544 I just wondered it that's an Electron he is making use of like an older beatbox.
First of all: thank you Mr. Johnson for the cool video. I just checked the manual: in stacked/layered mode you can actually edit and save the "layer B" patch as a NORMAL patch, so while creating a stacked patch you can edit both layer A and layer B as you go. When saving "the whole thing" you have to save layer A as a stacked patch (which will save the reference to the patch that is selected on layer B). You have to save layer B as a normal patch.... Happy it works that way or else it would be really hard to create perfect multi-layered patches.
OMG your last lead patch are unbelievable! Thank’s for this beautiful « show/tutorial ».
Very Japan style intro there. They were heavy into the prophets back in the day so it makes sense.
check Richard Barbieri's channel. He got one of the new prophet 5s and made some of his old sounds with it
We love you Matt! We're lucky to have a top-level professional making helpful vids. Can't wait till Jamiroquai is back on tour and you guys come to Los Angeles 🤗
And then there's the money issue. Which means I'll just watch you.
yeah we are lucky to ear it like this in some good hands :) :)
Yes…I could probably afford one of these like I could probably afford a sports car. For different reasons both would be wasted on me. As you said though, great to hear it is good hands😁
Well hi there Bear! Fancy seeing you here, didn’t know you were a synth head as well as a phenomenal pianist!
@@ElazulVGM Well, thank you! I have been using my Roland Jupiter 6 in my most recent videos. And a melodica :)
@@BearKeys oh wow I didn’t actually recognise the Jupiter 6 from that angle, that’s absolutely classy!
Ah… Canton… that gave me shivers.
Absolutely magic, sounds & playing.
And a great OS update for my favourite synth 👍
So smooth, buttery & organic sounding !
Wow, Matt! Another brilliant demo. Super inspiring playing and sounds. If I didn’t already own one, I would have ordered a P-10 right now. Sequential are the best. P-10 and P-3 blow my mind every day.
Great video and loved that you included some Level 42 “Living It Up” as part of the demo! Bravo.
It was a cool update - but it left me a bit bummed about the OS update for a few reasons:
1) They added complicated concepts (routing two patches that are only saved with layer A, changes in layer B will affect your 'stack'), but refused to add an octave transpose. When I had written to them in December about an octave transpose, their response was: "Sequential products are meant as stand-alone instruments, not as controllers." which kinda sucked to hear.
2) I had requested that they update the synth to NOT send PC messages when you change patches (if I use it as a master controller, which they tell me I shouldn't, it tells my sequencer to change patches). Despite having a Transmit parameters off setting - it still transmits PC messages. They said "oh, all our devices do it this way." Gee, great...
I'm expecting an updated P5/10 in a year or two with L/R outputs though...
Know you can also get a voice expansion board so if you can only afford the prophet 5 or you've already bought the prophet 5 you can still upgrade it to a 10 voice synthesizer. My dream synth! I've promised myself I'll get one of these if I can stay sober for at least a year. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
Hope you are doing well Séamus and keeping the prophet as your destination for a better life 👍
I’m looking around the house to see what I can sell.. I’d love a 10!
You can do it, it gets easier with time
Trust me, you don't need stereo outs on this beast. It sounds larger then life even in mono. You gotta hear it to believe it. Great video Matt always great stuff. 💯
Amen man, nothing a nice stereo chorus or delay can't sort out
It's more about tracking the new multi-timbrality live, and laziness :)
That’s the primary reason why I’m waiting. Once you play an OB-6, and stereo/pan-spread the voices, it’s the ultimate game-changer (IMHO), and makes all mono-out synths just sound average by comparison.
@@PacificIslandDrive other sound average is exaggerated :) it's can be a very useful feature, i love it too but don't over use it, you will loos some of the mono focus in a mix. if you like that you may want to also check fully stereo synths. like the udo6 or polyevovler
@@untml Yes, of course. Synth bass, leads, etc, are typically fine recording mono-out, and or with no spread. But when you’re playing pads, or primary keyboard hooks, etc, having that stereo-pan spread, is what makes the difference between ‘AM Radio’ hits, and ‘FM Radio’ hits :-)
really love your demos - your playing takes it to another level
I had to sell my Prophet 10 due to financial reasons a few months back but really wanted to get that sound again. 4k is too much to spend right now, but a Black Friday sale for a Take 5 for a good price? I could not resist. The Take 5 definitely is not a Prophet 10, but it's about as close as it gets. Not a perfect synth, but it works and feels like a complete instrument. Thanks to your reviews I bought both of these synths and if I had the money I would have kept both of them. To me the Prophet 10 is one of the best sounding if not the best sounding synth of all time. Sure, it's not perfect, but that sound is just inherently pleasing to my ears. Combined with your excellent playing skills, your knowledge and experience and your calm, collected, reasonable, entertaining and educational approach all I can say is thank you for your excellent work. I keep coming back to this particular video mainly for that riff at 09:33. It's simple, but the sound, the groove and the feeling it evokes are all brilliant. Upon returning here I thought I might let you know about some thoughts from one more pleased and frequent viewer of your videos. Keep up the excellent work! :)
Unbelievable great playing an even just better gotten synth. Thanks for the Stevie song at the end.🥰
You are a man of great musical wisdom and execution performing, thanks for taking the time to teach and inspire as well, top shelf mate !!!
Wonderful demonstration of an outstanding synth. Thank you so much Matt for this beautiful moment of music !
I loved hearing the Japan quote. Tin Drum is basically a P5 demo record.
And the Japan flag :)
Love watching the amazing demos. Especially listening to the super cool grooves my man. Thanks!
I may be able to buy a P10 tomorrow, wish me luck, everyone!
6:46 I immediately flashed back to Japan- Tin Drum vibes. Love it! Your content is always so inspirational, Matt!
Thank you so much for your sharing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just so appreciative and inspired by your work of the vibrations you make/allow to happen on this unlimitedly magical spaceship home (EARTH!). Just got my prophet 10, what a heady romantic experience same feeling as driving a Ferrari on track, falling in love, singing on stage. This is a thing that is so unspeakably good, so musical. I'm amazed at how this synth seems to continue right where the best music of our modern times left off and be a tool to take us into the sexy utopian funky musical future we all deserve!!
you are (by far) my favorite channel on youtube.
Great synthesizer for people who can play keyboard. Very nice video and playing!
Dang Matt you are showing me I have a lot more to explore with my prophet.
Kay this one might be one to get and keep sounds and looks totally solid.
Used to have the lot Minimoog, Korg Mono-Poly, Polysix, Roland VP-330, RS-505, SH-5 (oh I'd love to see a reissue of that one) Linndrums, TR's, Filterbanks, Arp Omni, Juno's.. bought them cheap but also sold them cheap if I see what they are going for now oh my... although lack of midi, and clocksyncing and triggering everything was often a nightmare solving slight delays and lags which often meant putting stuff physical closer together and using shorter cables even. Let alone maintenance on decades old electronic instruments no thanks..
But a new analog synth for the rest of my life, I'm getting attracted again, Prophet 10 with a Moog Grandmother on top and the new to be released Erica Synth Pèrkons drum machine.
Would be enough to create limitless amount of soundscapes and songs.
Sounds incredible
Sounds like Japan at the beginning and a lot at the end. i'm going to have to see if i can afford one now. Lot of those sounds takes me back to the 80's when music was brilliant.
Awesome update! Hopefully this opens up further future updates of assigning midi channel to split A/B and hopefully repurposing the headphone output to stereo or dual assigned mono for fx routing. 🤞
Hi Matt..... I think your channel is Fantastic.... Love the way you play Synths and have the knowledge to figure out all the Synths creating fantastic Funk... Someone mentioned on Dr Mix channel that you and Dr Mix should get together and jam... I would add one more person to the mix Alex Ball.....You three are the best on CZcams... I think it would interesting if you three could make an album together.... Keep up the great work.....
Would pay to see this gig
@@kray9438 absolutely. Claudio, Alex and Matt. can't be topped.
I literally came to the comments to see if someone had said anything about a Dr. Mix collab. It needs to happen!
Oh yeah fantastic idea and fully agree with that line up!!!
You can also get the voice expansion board for the P5 now to make it a P10
You had me at The sun goes down / Living it up! The P10 sounds really good under your care.
7:40 JMJ Oxygene 6 synth drums but with a Prophet-10 accompaniment! Great video.
My old prophet 10 had 2 keyboards and a funny little digital tape thingy for storage.
ribbon in the sky on synth
That sounds unbelievable
Great demo. Always a pleasure to watch your vids, Matt.
@4:50 It seems that it would be more logical if Sequential would have assigned the OSC A and OSC B knobs in the "Mixer'" section to adjust the volume-mix between Layer A and Layer B. You could have just simply Pressed/Held the PRESET button and then turned the OSC A and OSC B knobs rather than wearing-out the 'Group Select' and 'Bank Select' buttons to adjust the volumes.
I couldn’t agree more!!
Why didn’t they think ahead and put in a more informative display or an encoder etc. Something subtle to keep the look. Money problems?
this is a brilliant idea! i hope at sequential take in consideration very good user advices ( i think so ) :)
I have to get this synth, some way some how! Awesome stuff, best synthesizer videos on CZcams
@8:35 Level 42 - the Sun goes down!
Cripes. If only there were two outputs (I think this about my Prologue too)...
So much wished it had pan spread (and/or separate outs for each part)
The only way to stereo-pan/spread the voices, is to do it the old-school way, by recording different parts over multiple tracks, and then mix each track down, with panning. It’s a pain, but that’s how we did it back in the day. Otherwise, I’m waiting for Sequential/Focusrite to release a ‘Prophet 5/10’ with pan/spread voices and stereo-outputs (like they did with the P6 and OB-6). The original Prophet is such a great synth, there is no reason not to improve upon it for us ‘futurist’ types.
@@PacificIslandDrive god forbid someone would actually have to do something like that
Fantastic! The 10 is now The One!
I Love this Sounds! They never get old
Timeless really
Nice! These are good updates for people who want to gig and play live. In the studio I can manage these features in different ways using a P5. Might buy the second board for polyphony in the far future.
Thanks for playing some Japan! That's definitely in the forefront of my mind when I hear the Prophet 5 (or 10 as it may be!)
Normally you demo the poly synth with a Rhodes or a Montage alongside ,to provide the second accompanying sound…… but for the first time this prophet is absolutely complete on its own .
Is this now a contender for the greatest analogue poly synth of all time??

At 8:34 you're just gonna casually drop some Level 42 on us and not even wink at the camera? Love that band. The Sun Goes Down is a great song nobody knows.
it's a great song! the video is nice too
the ignorants don't knows
Song is fire 🔥
Nice haircut, Matt
Does anyone else here wish that these recent Pro-5 and Pro-10 re-releases had more more modern functions like stereo output, delay/reverb, an arpeggiator or an onboard sequencer?
Admittedly those types of onboard functions were not around at the time of the Prophet-5's original release date back in the 1970s, but they are commonly wanted functions these days.
The original Prophet-5 did not even have a headphone jack, and maybe these re-releases are really trying to 'stay true' to their original era, but some new/modern/extra functions would turn the Pro-5 and Pro-10 into powerhouse modern synths.
That low passed pad @ 8:45 is really great.
Thanks for giving us an inspiring overview, cant wait to update my 10..😊😊
Amazing playing and sound design as always Matt! It's a real treat to hear these awesome synths played by a proper musician. PS I'll have to go for the Take 5 myself due to budget constraints!
Love the 42 riff...top video dude...its a belter of a synth.
Thanks for sharing Matt
Great demo and knowledge
Fantastic demo - thanks for the tasty sounds!
Hope you take a look at the prophet take 5 when it comes out! Lovely video as always! The poly unions sounds amazing!
The Take 5 is a Sequential product but it’s definitely not a Prophet. I know what you mean though.....
Daaaangit that fade out! Satisfying stuff, abridged…
Nice bit of Canton by Japan in there.
I was watching this and mentally complementing you on some of the patches you created, when whoa! - down went that sun :) Stacking and splitting a big new feature, congrats to Sequential for implementing.
That track is big for me Mike, grew up loving that riff!
the patch at the end is great!
Great demo, sounds lovely!
I think I'm in love! :-0
Thanks, great video, this machine is a gem.
Heck YEAH! Can't wait to try this out! As a keyboard player I really wanted 10 voices, but now I can't see why anyone would want to get a 5 over a 10 (besides price) - but I definitely think the 10 is worth it.
I believe you can upgrade the 5 to 10 voices now, so I guess it's not a bad option if you can't spend all the money at once!
The last song reminds me of Alessandro Alessandroni, lovely stuff Matt.
Impressive and inspiring sounds indeed.
Looking forward to a Matt Johnson patch set for the Prophet 10 in the near future 😬
yes!
9:55 loverly, just luverly
if this had a second output for the split keyboard sounds and a High and low impedance switch it would be the best synth ever made.
Your videos are awesome!! This is a great update to the OS but you lose the total voices depending on the patch when you stack voices. I am actually running a Prophet 10 board stacked with a Prophet 10 module. You can't poly chain yet but you can change the MIDI so you can control the functions on both units independently while still using the keyboard. This way you have 20 voices. With 10 voices split in stack mode you drop to 5 voices and then some notes drop off depending how many keys are depressed which I'm sure you know. This is why I went with two units. Cheers!! :-)
6:46 Japan/Sylvian/Barbieri !
Great sounds mate 👍
Ah, a fellow ‘Japan’ fan. Nice job.
4:58 that’s good customer support!!
👌👍. From God's own country. Kerala
The whole sounds of the prophet 10 are amazing. Unfortunately we need to sold a kidney just to buy one. The impression of hearing Air-Moon Safari or Daft punk-Discovery at any notes.
That's a very hopeful affiliate link. Best of luck.
Fantastic 😊
Wow, great video! Dig the new hair! I especially liked the bit at the very end. My friend, let me tell you, you should really become a musician! I know you must have heard it before, but I think you could really be successful! Good on you and good luck!
WOOOOWOW!!! YES!!! Hyperspeed
Beautiful finish btw just a lovely float off into space
So juicy! Is their a custom patches library in work?
Yeah I def plan to release one

new album from Jamiroquai Matt? When?
OMG!!! at 6:46 David Sylvian & Japan. Thanks.
Kind of scratching my head as to why they just did splits & layers now? When it came out it seemed like a glaring omission.
regarding 5 or 10, people usually don't think about "voice stealing". with the 5 voices if you play 3 notes chord and then another 3 notes chord with long release the second chord will "steal" one voice from the first chord. if you play chords of 4 the second chord will steal (cut) 3 notes from the first chord.
Sometimes that's desirable though
When playing 5 note chords the nest chord comes in cleanly
interesting, if this desirable you can now mimic this behavior with 10 voice version by setting the split point at the lowest or highest key of the keyboard so you will play just one of the layers, or using the stuck mode and lowering one of the layers volume down.
@@MattJohnsonJamiroquai ok, i missed they also implement "five voice limit mode" for the 10 :-)
6:46 Sons of Pioneers ....niiiiice.
I like that Japan song I don"t remember the name but it's the important Riuchy Sakamoto's contribution to the band
Looks like a PERFECT synthesizer keyboard for making Minecraft Soundtracks 😘For Synthwave and Lo-fi Music must be pretty good too! 🤍
Show us how to update os to get this new feature please. Thank you.
Awe come on, don’t shame me with your Prophet 10 keyboard for owning a Prophet 5 module! Great work as always!
Hello Matt, is the first patch at around 1:50 included in one of your soundpacks? cheers
Nice touch of Japan there…
dude if you get the five you can later get the expansion if your strap for cash! or if you only plan to play one sound you save some dough!
I just tested it and you can hold inc/dec while holding velocity and it will continue to go up/down. You shouldn’t need to press it again and again.
Subscribed , just for playing Canton !
Whatcha think…. Prophet 10 or OB6?? I can only have one. Not as enamored with the OB6 as i think i should be… sounds thin compared to the JX8P I just scored
It's such a personal decision. They are both cool synths
Hey Matt, love these vids. Quick question..I’m thinking of getting a poly D, what’s your thoughts?
This is amazing! Does anyone know if each patch gets its own LFO? I always thought the P10 just had one global LFO.
I.e. can I have one split part with a slow lfo on pitch and the other with a fast LFO on pulse width but not pitch?
Yes you can
