- A step by step tutorial showing how to paint realistic fur and a Spaniel ear in acrylics. Longer fur that overlaps like found on Spaniel ears can be challenging but with the light layering process it becomes easier to tackle. Painting fur in acrylics relies on a couple of factors. Good contrast and subtle layers are my main focus. I find this helps to build up more depth and realism in the finished pet portrait.

Our blue roan cocker spaniel passed away a year ago and I haven't been able to bring myself emotionally to a place where I would be looking at his face for a significant amount of time but from watching your process and adapting it to oils I now feel I can do him justice.
