  • A step by step tutorial showing how to paint realistic fur and a Spaniel ear in acrylics. Longer fur that overlaps like found on Spaniel ears can be challenging but with the light layering process it becomes easier to tackle. Painting fur in acrylics relies on a couple of factors. Good contrast and subtle layers are my main focus. I find this helps to build up more depth and realism in the finished pet portrait.

Thank you for your explanation and demonstration. Our blue roan cocker spaniel passed away a year ago and I haven't been able to bring myself emotionally to a place where I would be looking at his face for a significant amount of time but from watching your process and adapting it to oils I now feel I can do him justice.

This is so helpful thank you. I’m painting Chesapeake bat retriever and the wavy fur is hard to get it right.

I love this. My Chihuahua had some curls, not many that I had a hard time capturing. I am happy with her portrait, but I wish I had found your tutorial sooner 😢❤

I’m new to animal portraits, yet I am a trained artist! You are fantastic:) My BFA is in Ceramics and Abstract Painting. In a week or soI I’ll be joining Patreon.
In just seven minutes I’ve learned SO much! Thank you for sharing your gift. Oh, I’m Shane, BTW. Hope to chat with you soon. I assume you are across the pond, based on your accent lol. I’m in Charleston, SC…..and there is a HUGE market here for pet portraits here that I want to dive in. I do human portraits as special gifts due to the length of time it takes to complete one, but I sell my original abstract more. Hope to chat with you soon!! Oh, have you ever done a medium goldendoodle? -Cheers, Shane

Are you just lightening the same color as you go, then glazing color changes later?
