Registrace 20. 01. 2018
My name is Zara Toms, based in Hampshire in the UK. I specialise in detailed pet portraits and wildlife art in pastels and acrylics. My CZcams channel is packed full of painting & drawing tips and techniques. If you're beginning your art journey, a hobbyist or an advanced artist I'm always happy to answer any art related questions. If you'd like to grow and develop your art further I offer in depth, considerably slower, often real time tutorial in pastels and acrylics on my Patreon. My Patreon has a large range of domestic pets for members who are looking to expand into pet portraits themselves. With a range of breeds demonstrating the tips and techniques I use to transfer into their own portraits. There is also a wide range of wildlife subjects so there is something for everyone :).
I upload videos to CZcams every Tuesday & Saturday.

How to draw cat paws in graphite | Tips for drawing fur
In this tutorial, I'll show how to draw cat paws in graphite. The way I break this up and make this section of the portrait easier to draw can be transferred across to any other animal paw. By focusing on one toe at a time and then the individual layers, it makes it much easier to end up with a realistic looking paw.
Like with all realistic portraits, the layering process and pencil technique are crucial especially when drawing fur. It's about building up these values gradually and refining each layer as we work. This will achieve more depth and end up in a more 3D drawing when finished.

How to paint a photo realistic Lion in acrylics | Painting fur in acrylics
zhlédnutí 641Před 7 hodinami
In this tutorial I'll show how to paint a realistic Lion in acrylics. I loved painting this because of the different fur textures. Painting realistic fur in acrylics relies on a few factors which I speak about in this video. Layering, what brushes to use, paint mixture and contrast all work together to build up depth and realism. Painting a Lions mane can be quite overwhelming so breaking it up...
How to draw highly detailed fur in pastels | Tips guaranteed to make a difference
zhlédnutí 1,3KPřed dnem
In this tutorial, I'll share my top tips for drawing realistic, highly detailed fur in pastels. When drawing fur in pastels there are a few things that can make a huge difference. Drawing photo realistic animals relies on the right layering and pencil techniques. If these are lacking then the entire portrait will appear flatter, more two dimensional. All of the tips and techniques I mention in ...
How to draw a horse nose/muzzle in graphite | Realistic horse drawing
zhlédnutí 403Před 14 dny
In this tutorial I'll show how to draw a realistic horse nose/muzzle in graphite. As there is little to no hair on the horses nose, the shading of layers is key. This is the same when drawing skin in that each layer needs to have a softness in order to look realistic. Using the graphite pencils in the correct way to replicate the right textures is always really important. - - - - Pastel, Acryli...
How to paint white fur in acrylics | Guinea Pig acrylic painting

How to draw a bird beak in pastels | Realistic Peacock drawing

In this tutorial I'll show how to draw a bird's beak in pastels. This tips I share in this video can be applied to any smoother element within a drawing. The initial layering process of the base foundation is what makes a big difference to the smoothness that is achieved. How to draw a Deer in graphite | Drawing realistic fur in graphite

In this tutorial, I'll show how to draw a photo realistic Deer in graphite. The techniques required when using the graphite pencils and erasers is really important. If the graphite is applied in the wrong way then the erasers will have a much harder time creating the lighter, fine details. Drawing realistic fur in graphite falls down to layers and contrast to ensure that maximum depth is achiev...

In this tutorial I'll show how to paint a photo realistic German Shepherd in acrylics. When painting highly detailed fur in acrylics there are a few key things to consider. In this tutorial, I'll show how to draw a realistic Rabbit in pastels. When drawing highly detailed fur the layering process, contrast and pencil technique are so important. How to paint whiskers & fine lines in acrylics | Photo realistic horse painting

In this tutorial I'll show how to paint whiskers and fine lines in acrylics. When painting realistic whiskers of any animal, the brush technique and constancy of paint vs water is so important. If these two things are incorrect then the whiskers look thicker and unnatural. Each whiskers should be curved and be thinner at the end which helps to capture more realism in the brush stroke. The fur for this dog is a mixture of wiry and soft textures so the balance between pencil and softening techniques are important. ☺️What paper do you draw on?
I have well I used to have a poodle. He was supposed to be a toy miniature poodle, but he came out to be sort of medium size. We got him when I was six years old and he just passed away on Saturday so I’m just trying to think of like Christmas ideas because I love doing art I’m not professional, but I just love to do it for fun, I’ve known him my whole life pretty much I mean my mom has had a couple dogs before but this winter longest dog she’s ever had. I’m just trying to think of ways to keep them around. I’ve seen people create their pets in art, but I don’t know how.
Awsome Miss. ❤
How did you draw the original outline so well? I struggle the most with the outline and proportions.
At precisely 13:34, you use a black tool with a silver base and a spongy looking black tip for the spaniel's ears. What is that? Is it a smudger or a type of pencil?
@@22cyndi22 it's a pastel stick holder with a black pastel stick inside.
Beautiful thank you
@leelanandaihalagamage8005 thank you 😊
how do you sharpen your pastel pencils? I can never get mine long enough to make such fine fur details
@@rachellobb6904 I use a Stanley knife to sharpen my pencils.
Che meraviglia.
what is that big black pastel pencil youre using for the darkest largest areas?
I am left handed so things the way you do it I struggle sometime with the angles
Superb creation, thank you. I adore. 🎨👍
Multumesc pentru prezentare. Mi-a fost de mare folos. Mult succes in continuare!
This is the color of eyes that a cat painting has, that 8 am working on...I needed this ..exactly the same color... Thank You 🙏
So to glaze a painting i need to use water? Or what? 😭😭
@@artist7509 I just use water.
@@zaratomsart okay thanks, but one question. I'm like using an art kit with instructions and I don't understand. It's like a canvas with a grey drawing I have to paint with acrylics. It's says that color glaze means "the application of transparent color to the canvas allowing the grey scale design to remain clearly visible". Does this mean I have to paint the canvas in transparent color? 😭 The kit doesn't have any transparent color so I don't understand
@artist7509 is it paint by numbers? Without seeing the kit it's hard to say but that glaze may be more like a wash where you put a colour down but transparent to see the guide lines for then painting on top of?
@@zaratomsart it's not paint by numbers, it's like a canvas with a grey scale drawing and then a instructions kit that tells me how to apply the colors ect
What medium are you working with?
@@dellajful pastels =)
VERY BEAUTIFUL, AND VERY HELPFUL IN MY PAINTING, THANKS
Wow, amazing painting. Thank you for sharing your talent..

Which Liquitex colors did you use?
How do you sharpen your pencils? I keep breaking the tip 🤷♂
@@815donalduck I use a Stanley knife. I find that makes the pencils last the longest and doesn't break the lead like normal sharpeners.
Thank you Zara for another wonderful pastel tutorial. Portrait looks fabulous, well done, so realistic. Really appreciate your tips and hints. You are so talented, one of my favourite pastel artists. ❤❤
@Lizziebird-pg4gj thank you so much. That's so kind ❤️. So pleased the tutorial was helpful 🥰
Excellent vid. I’ve learned so much from watching your channel. Animals are my thing but in graphite. I may just have to go to pastels…👍

Hi Zara! I have followed several of your lessons to date and have found them extremely useful as I try to come to grips with pastel pencils. However, I am experiencing a problem that is marring the finished work. I do not seem to be able to 'lose' the tooth of the paper in some areas. Is it simply that I am not applying enough pastel, not blending it sufficiently, or what? I would welcome your advice.
