  • In this video, I compare the tried and true Moongel drum dampeners and some much cheaper generic gel dampeners that you can get on Amazon. I will walk you through how to use gel dampeners and how to use moongel for drums and cymbals and then give my thoughts on which of the two products I like better.

    I’ve played drums for 30+ yrs and I’ve never used these BUT I just was at the drum shop and picked myself up a set so I’m gonna try em out. I’ve always used plumbing foam or whatever. It works very well too ya know

    I use sports tape, the kind you wrap around your arm or knee for extra support. But it leaves adhesive residue on the heads. I can see the moongels don't, which is awesome. I do have a hairy cat though - so I think if both sides of those are sticky, mine will soon be furry little dampeners and that's not cool. Do the generic have adhesive on the sticky side, or do they just lift off again, like jello jigglers, the way the moongels do?

    Ok, back from the studio! I gave these dampeners a fair chance. Ordered 2 different count packs of these from Amazon,......and they worked awesome! "Diclaimer", my money paid for these ,and I was a fan of moongel drum dampening! Until now, I feel they cost too much for what you get. So, Im writing this to help. i feel drummers need to know this cheaper option works too! I Used one for my 14 x 6 1/2" DW bell brass snare, one for 10", two for the 12" and four for the 16" floor. My snare head was a Evans UV2 , and toms were all Evans EC2s. Im happy to report my kit sounded fantastic, and these are infact reusable just the same as moongels!!! Yay! When they get cruddy, just rinse off n let dry! Our studio engineer was pleased with them, and said he was gonna look into getting some too! He said, because he seen they work. Also, ppl keep walking off with all his moongels sadly. Thats not cool, dont steal your studio engineers moongels guys, c'mon! I will definitely use these dampeners from now on, and won't look back! They look way cleaner ,and they cost way less. I dont find the need to tear/cut these in half either.they're sized more appropriate in my opinion. I definitely feel these pads are genuine value here! They work the same, and you get way more of them. For the price you pay for one container of moongels(6 gels), you could instead have and 36-48 dampening pads!?! Thats 6-8 times as many! No brainer there i think. So, dont be afraid to buy some of these guys, great cheap investment! Thanks again for the informative video Mike! Im glad i watched it, and very happy with them!

    Wow mike, i swear we could be related. I dont come across too many people that look like me lol. So these dots muffle sound awesome, and make drums sound natural still without killing attack!?! I used to like studio rings,but they seem to kill all highs and attack just leaving the lows. Ive used Moongels for many years too,theyre good but get crusty and sometimes too much muffle. Wayyyy too exspensive for what they are! Studio rings fall off n get lost dark clubs . i believe you've found the perfect alternative for me! Im so confident, i just ordered 1 30 pack, then i went and ordered a 48 pack for my 8 pc. Kit too! The price on these is definately way better than the other options. Seem more versital on sound and looks too!from what i heard through my stereo on your video,it seemed like a good call. Ill comment back later on, how i feel about them after i go to the studio n a couple weeks. Ill put them to the test there. Again, thank you for making this video!!!

I checked out your channel, the FPV Drone stuff looks like a lot of fun, and it seems like you are quite handy with a soldering iron. I am ok at electronics, I build guitar stomp boxes, but don't have the knowledge in that area that you seem to have. Nice job!

    • @SamS5402
      @SamS5402 Pƙed rokem +1

      I'm late for this, just don't put them on the logos. Temperature change and leaving them on for a while can take off the ink but anywhere else and it's fine. I use 2 moongels on an 18 aax omni because the overtone is weirdly tin-y.

    I tried this generic stuff and can definitely say it is no where near as good at controlling over tones as proper Moon Gel! I think it's just the mass and softness of the Moon Gel, but the generic stuff is a massive difference in it's shortfall at doing the job, and I mean massive! I won't use the generic stuff again, it just doesn't seem to absorb those over tones like Moon Gel does.

      Yeah I just got these generic ones from Amazon as well because there were 30 for $9. They do a pretty good job but not nearly as well as rtom moongels. They also for some reason don’t stay on as long evens tho they seem stickier. I had a couple not even last one service. Will probably go back to normal moongels or just invest in an m80 snareweight

      @MicahIsBatman2 Pƙed 7 měsĂci

      I've had experience with both, but if I'm, being honest Moon Gel is kind of a scam. It's an extra 4 dollars for 500% less dampaners, and honestly they sound just as good as each other, and the Gel Dampaners look better anyways.
