A lot of times they do. Problem is he is not running conventional routes. He's playing backyard football with Mahomes. If you give Mahomes time, Kelce will be able to get open.
I think that was the point of the video
He used to be a qb so he knows where he would want the te to be if he was a qb
Yeah. Kelce's first few seasons, he didn't produce much if they didn't scheme him the free release. Now, he'll hang in there to block for a 2- or 3-count, and then peel away for the "How did that happen?" reception. I don't know that he could keep a DE engaged for that count when he first hit the league. He wasn't a very good chipper, at first. Now he's one of the better in-line blockers, imho.
The better he is as a blocker, the better a weapon he becomes. I think he's checked just about all the boxes for the all-around TE. Gronk was better in-line from the beginning, and it took Kelce a while to get there, I think. One of the reasons Kelce's so great is he eliminates his weaknesses. Eventually Father Time will catch up, but he's pretty complete, now.
Welcome to Kelce's.
We're always open.
That comment deserves 2 likes and a laugh !
I have now stolen this. You rule!
They actually do double team him... It's just that he's so freakin good he manages to slip away. Give the guy some credit for being very good at what he does. 😊
Patrick, I think, once let slip that since TK has qb experience, he's able to read coverage's, which helps immensely. As well as his connection with 15.
IIRC, He went into college as a QB, not a TE.
I wouldn't be surprised if he had DB experience too. He knows the defender's job better than the defenders do.
Yep. HS & 2 yr college QB. Junior yr was his first as a TE.
He played QB in high school, and wanted to play QB in college but he wasn’t good enough so he switched to TE
idk. he played QB at HS. its nothing like playing QB in the pros. i think overall his experience atp of his career is just what helps him
He was taught as a QUARTERBACK in high school and college. As a result, he has a better understanding of the defensive alignment. He knows where the 'holes' are going to be. Gee, just like Mahomes. So they think alike most times. Get open, get the pass. Great team.
I definitely think that plays into it, but Logan Thomas has a background as a quarterback too and has never had the same kind of success Travis has. Maybe that's because his QB situation in the NFL has been so volatile? Or maybe Trav was a better HS/college QB than Logan? I don't know.
@@dominicpancella3012 valid point.
@@dominicpancella3012 Trust & freedom. Reid trusts them both enough to turn 'em loose & let 'em do what they do - make plays.❤️🤍🙌
@@dominicpancella3012 its cuz he is a worst TE and experience at QB is not that much worth. travis played QB at HS level. sure he might have a basic idea but NFL defenses are 10x more complex than HS if not 100x. it prolly helps a bit, but not much. just overall experience and chemistry
I love other fans say we got “so and so he will cover Travis”. Yea, good luck.
True. Hamilton is the best I’ve seen at covering him-better than James, imo. If KH couldn’t slow him down, I don’t know who will.
@@jld593Agree not to mention Hamilton hasn't allowed a TE touchdown all season even when he played almost all good TE
Mahomes and Kelce play like a Point Guard and Power Forward. They both know how space opens up and how defenders collapse, turn their hands, hedge...
Dude, This was awesome. My Brothers and I say every week. WHY IS KELCE SO OPEN??!! 😮😡😆
Well, here I am 75yo and for the first time in my life I’m watching this video explaining football plays. This was very informative but the NFL and other commentators can thank a T-N-T connection because without it? No, I always thought it a boring sport where men ran into each other, fell down, then stood around a lot. I wasn’t even a Swifty, just knew “Shake it off” but this couple has captured lightning in a bottle. I’m driving my hubby crazy with questions about football. “ whose pocket is MAHONES in?” …lol
what an amazing look under the hood of the hotrod Chiefs. McCoy, you're nailing it, thanks!
You guys are great. I noticed in several of those plays, Mahomes recognized Kelce being open in literally an instant. Not many QBs have the mental capacity to do that, or the physical skills to throw a dime to a spot that wasn't in practice runs.
This is literally what I think about all the freaking time. Clicked instantly lol
its wild how u guys don’t understand hes just great. u can double team kelce every play then rashee rice will end up for 10 for 130 and a tud or two
@@jaysonsmith7264 this video goes into much more detail than him being “just great”. Some of us want to hear the nuances of the game we’re not here to just glaze cock
When an elite tight end has an elite quarterback that's in sync with eachother, this is what happens.
Mahomes knows what Kelce is gonna do before he even makes his 1st move.
The timing is impeccable. No linebacker or defensive back can defend this. It takes an elite safety like Ed Reed to lock down this matchup.
I think we learned last Sunday that Kyle Hamilton, for all his excellence, isn't Ed Reed.
They did! Especially during the 2023-24 season! He just knows how to allude them with his experience and physical ability!
Great video, I learned a ton. Thank you (from a woman who's been watching football for 65 years without really seeing it!)
These explanations are really helpful guys! You have shown that Travis scouts out the open areas in zone coverage all the time. Patrick sees those openings as well and knows that Travis is going to be there and gets the ball in the air before Travis makes his move. So I don't think this is not backyard football at all. I have to believe that Reid is 100% in the loop.
It’s impossible to always cover a guy who runs to the open spot of the field and not a route. That’s what Kelce does and his chemistry with Mahomes makes it works. He’ll literally change his route based on the defense. The only way to ensure it is to always cover all parts of the field at all times. That’s a tall order.
What always amaze me is the pass-catch connection of Kelce & Mahomes were in the ball is already in the air and Kelce will turn were the ball is already on his direction😅 It’s like magic!😅😂
adding another point as to why he isnt doubled more, if you look at the snaps kelce draws a defensive holding, most of them come on double teams
Thank you! As a Bills fan that has been a top question for years!
Excellent vid. Thx boys
I love that phrase "the right to get open". Is that something coaches teach or is that more of an analyst phrase?
it’s a reference to what Travis says a lot “you gotta fight for the right to party”
Best breakdown on these two I'v seen!
I loved the breakdown and slo-mos so I could actually see what’s happening. It’s usually happening so fast, I have no idea what’s going on. Thoroughly enjoyed this whole video.
Kelce is a natural Maverick.
That's how he is able to get away with all that improvisation. Also Coach Reid is open minded and has great mind.
Thank You!! You always make learning fun😃and now I know what DK means😎
Kelce is just that good.
1. They draw up an offensive scheme that creates space because you can't ignore wide receivers and leave them wide open.
2. Travis improvises a lot, and finds space in real time rather than running a pre-determined route. His connection to Mahomes as well as the anticipation and football intelligence of both QB and TE is unique.
3. It's scripted :)
Could we please get you two to call the Super Bowl from now on? This in depth breakdown of these plays is so great. I learned so much and have much more appreciation for how special Kelce and Mahomes are.
I would have liked to see this sort of analysis all year, much more than the Fantasy content. It's great to watch.
They were shutting him down week 4-16 basically. It's possible when everyone else is dropping it so mahomes is scared to throw anywhere. Then they double Travis and it works. Now that rice is trusted it's back to being unstoppable again. Crazy they just need 1 other guy for their duo to be unstoppable.
Kelce started the season injured
He played 15 games, a good portion of them nursing an ankle or knee injury and yet he still ended up second in yards for TEs and just 16 yards short of 1000 yards for the 8th straight year.
Obviously Rice's emergence helps tremendously, but that doesn't tell the whole story.
The play around 7:45 was also so good because 84 bumps his defender and creates the necessary space through delaying him for a second.
It's pure finesse
Until the last couple of games, in regular season. I remember many saying that so many games went by without him having many catches or any TD, because he was double or tripple covered. So it worked quite well for a stretch of time.
Travis is an ex quarterback so not surprised his football IQ is up there.
That‘s what I heard from other analysts: The chiefs and specially TK DON‘T STOP PLAYING until the play is really over 👍💪!
Because it usually doesn't help... Kelce is always open!!
Welp, there you have it! All we need now, is a new PFF category called "savvy"! Or better yet, Savvy Travvy! "Yeah, he is fast as hell, but his Savvy Travvy rating is way too low."
Travis ran the wrong route on that long scramble vs the ravens. that wasn't the way it was supposed to go.
They do!
Love it!
Huh? Some players are just good. It isn't bad defense. Kelce has been an NFL tight end for over a decade. So maybe he learned something about getting open with Alex Smith so when Patrick came along it all worked much better.
Teams do double and many times triple team Travis Kelce. He either is able to get out of it and catch the football when he still has a player on him or someone else on the Chiefs are open. This is why Travis being able to be so savvy in football is considered a top TE.
the big part is the qb's ability to throw with pinpoint accuracy threading the needle between several defenders
They do
I wonder if 15 and 87 could teach this to other receivers.
mahomes turned around before trav even caught it at 5:11 lol
He was 11/11 againsts Raven's defense. Don't know who else can stop him.
The Ravens didn't shut the chiefs out in the second half. The chiefs already had the lead so the chiefs just moved the ball conservatively, didn't take risks of turning the 🏈 football over and they leaned on their all pro defense and they shut out the Baltimore Ravens offense. If the ravens would have scored,i believe that the chiefs offense would've scored again. Why risk turning the ball over trying to run up the score on a team you are already beating 🤔? Makes no sense. When he needed to ice the game....he trows a deep ball to who else? Marquez Valdez scantling! Who would've guessed that?
Kelce breaks a lot routines that’s why he’s always open
If other teams double cover Travis Kelce, 12 defenders is an illegal participation; If other teams defense remains eleven, then other receivers are open when Kelce cover is doubled.
On the 3rd and 7, Hamilton #17 feels this was more than a rub. Did 87 play him into his team mate by taking his route further up field? This is the way a RB sets up his blockers or a QB moves to help his blockers.
They do double cover him and they bracket him and they sometimes triple cover him in red zone.
Travis is like 7eleven. He is always open 😁
Why don’t they double cover Tee Higgins? Jamar Chase? Justin Jefferson? George Kittle? You guys won’t make that video
Apparently because they don’t mind losing. Period. He is a guy that Bobby Bowden would have applied his nickname “ Seven Eleven”…. Because Travis stays OPEN 24 hours a day!
Call me crazy but I think Kelce is savvy
87 is able to roll with the pass because 15 places the ball where 87 needs to go.
Travis’ experience as Quarterback in his college years help him to play other positions aside from just being a tight end.
why people keep saying this. he played QB in HS. it prolly barely makes a difference playing QB in hs is nothing like in NFL
@ricardorivera7549 before his suspension in college he was playing QB. When the coach allowed him back on the team the following season he was moved to TE.
@@mommytotwinsplustwo yeah he was a qb from the wildcat formation, mainly to run the ball. he has zero passing attempts for his career in college. just 8 rushes for 47 yards from the wildcat
Sometimes he ain’t covered at all and I’m like wtf???
Mahomes owes his success to Kelce's ingenuity...Kelce has saved so many 3rd and 4th downs, not counting touch downs, and he deserves much more credit for the success they've had. Kelce says he'll never play for a different team, because he knows none of the other coaches would, or could, give him that freedom on the playing field. The problem with so many teams are those "stiff" coaches playing only by the playbook and routings established decades ago...without imagination and flexibility when the situation presents itself.
Mahomes owed all of his success to Kelce? Give me a break.
@@ParkerBG Who does he mostly use on 3 and 4th downs when Chiefs are behind. Your in denial!
@@tannenbaumgirl3100 If Kelce wasn’t there he’d use the next best player. It’s really that simple of a concept. But I guess your brilliant mind thinks it’s a good idea to use worse players when better ones are available? Maybe you should leave sports talk to the adults and go play with your dolls baby girl.
Was Kelce even touched on that first take??
Teams do double and sometimes triple team Travis.
They definiely would if they knew the play call.
So there's no one on one defensive man that can cover him ?
No, not even close. Too big for DB's and too fast for linebackers
They do? Wtf do you mean
Of course, he has been double-covered! What are you talking about???
Who double covers a tight end anyway? lol!
There is no position outside the linemen who are as big and as fast as a tight end.
He's running to open spaces
Because they CAN'T!
yall hate the chiefs and just follow
You don’t double cover tight ends.
then he throws to someone else and you lose the superbowl
stack the receiving lanes and have the dline pressure mahomes. that should be one of the niners gameplan. not just double team. even a TE spy e
Why did you even maker this video? They double him all the time and sometimes triple.
We’re watching the first trials of neuralink’d players. lol
Answer: They can’t
Im one of those people that thinkd Kelce should be double team like glue
Cant double him! How stupid!
Cuz he smells bad
They underestimate him this late in his career-foolishly
How many TDs to OTHER players are given up for a 10 yard gain to 87??? Just on these examples there were a few receivers running to end zone or are free.
Players are also scared to hit Mahomes, and for good reason 😂
u just dont watch the games
Can’t hit what you can’t catch
He’s a high level Illuminati member lol
If defenses weren’t terrified to hit KC players, their offense would be limited
Agreed 👍
Sup fan of worse team😂

Terrified of what?
@@CurleyJeffersonS 15 yards
If Mahomes had a mediocre line like Josh Allen's or Brock Purdy's, he wouldn't be just sitting back there waiting till Kelce gets open. We already saw how Mahomes reacts to pressure in their Super Bowl vs Tom Brady and even in the first Super Bowl vs the 49er where SUCKED most of that game and Tyreek Hill bailed him out by getting so wide open that even Ryan Leaf would have hit him. Now we see Tyreek making mediocre Tua look like an MVP.
Of course you used the one game where the whole Oline was backups to make a nonsensical point
