      they have an entire tender already ,and they have started work on the frame, it wont be built as a single piece. its a whole bunch of pieces because obviously its way to hard to make a single cast now.

    • @WinterroSP
      @WinterroSP Před rokem +68

      @@jimmythatguy thats one reason yes, but the primary reason for the split frame is so it can traverse curves better. That long of a rigid frame causes a lot of stress on the metal, having a bigger chance on cracks in the frame. Wich is a death sentence for the loco if not found early.

      People said it would take a decade to restore the 3985 if she was done under Union Pacific and she’s already close to the point of getting her boiler sandblasted. I get the facts about rebuilding this kind of locomotive heck I bet it probably would be the same way if a brand new big boy was to be rebuilt from scratch except the build an engine like that would probably take all the way to 2040. It’s still gonna be great to see one of the toughest streamliners return again

      The project will be completed and fail. Why? Because to build a locomotive lacks the expertise to do that today. So if the reach to build it the mostly will have all the baby problems with it that was on solvable with experience but that experience is lost because death of the people with knowledge.

Also the construction methods diverge significantly in places as their are now cheaper and easier to work with alternatives(welding over riveting)

That said, if they can build a dang T1 from scratch, why the hell can't they rebuild a GG1 to working order? Updated electrical equipment to meet modern standards & run on the same system as Amtrak, but the same quill drive system. If they can cast a new chassis & drivers for the T1, surely someone can recast the frames & bogeys for the GG1 since the old ones have too many weld repairs from cracking from 50 yrs of service. I understand why it hasn't been done as of yet (money, lack of infrastructure, etc), but you cant tell me its impossible when you got an amazing group of folks building a T1 from the ground up..

      Well, many people (American and even British) do not believe that Mallard deserved that crown, due to the circumstances of the test. Test track's all wrong (being downhill) and Mallard sustaining damage after the speed run. In their POV, a proper high speed record run is something similar to a rail version of a Bonneville Salt Flats speed run: straight level track, and two runs for the fastest average speed. And with the most precise measuring equipment, of course.

By the time you lease passenger cars, pay for the insurance the class ones require, and the operating costs and there is no money left over, you are looking at least $2k per train ticket. Where as for 611 at Strasburg, people were only paying $30 on average per ticket to ride behind 611. It makes better business sense to go to short lines or tourist railroads. There's no shortage of rails for the T1. By the time it's complete, NS will have new mgmt.
      The speed record will fall on a closed FRA test track.

    If only it was the fabled S1! I remember reading a story about an unconfirmed report via timing posts that one Pennsylvania road S1 hit an estimated 160 MPH while pulling a passenger train. Both T1 and S1 are/were absolute beasts of their time though.

    Bringing the T1 back from the dead. Road number #5550. The #5550 could come out early

    I read that from an engineering perspective, nothing over a speed of 127 is technically possible. And I think 122 was about the maximum achievable

  • @Rob1_5
    @Rob1_5 Před rokem +3

    I hope it gets built but there's no where that will allow them to try and break the speed records and if I remember correctly this engine had wheel slip issues so I don't think it'll even be fast enough to do so.

    • @ARG0T
      @ARG0T Před rokem +5

      The prototypes didn't have wheel slip issues, plus the trust will rectify the wheel slip when it's built

      It's only "officially" a record... one that S1 and T1 broke regularly.
      Heck, even "Tiny-wheels" N&W Class J clocked 112mph on a scheduled run during PRR trials. The magic of precision roller-bearings and well-balanced reciprocating mass.

    Most definitely, only reason mallard went 126 is because they had a hill, if they sent that thing over the saluda grade, it would absolutely shatter the record
