    The crucible you like its alumina but grogged heavily and its not fired to fully vitrification.
    Glass like crucibles dont withstand thermal shock.
    For thermal shock you want low cooked and heavy grogged( the specks).
    Grog helps because when a crack starts it ends on the nearest grain.
    The more grogged and least vitrifyed( least glass like density) the more resistant to thermal shock the material is.
    I make raku ceramic and the clay to withstand such violent conditions has about 35-40% grog.

    I only used it once or twice but Mcmaster carr sells a 2500F Glazed Graphite Melting Pot as well as 3100F alumina crucibles .

    i've also heard "direct flame exposure" will usually degrade the crucible faster. i bought $200 bucket of Tabcast-94. a "94% alumina, hydraulic setting Dense Castable Refractory cement" to make my own crucibles. i still havent gotten around to making one.

      Yes its true but at times when doing high melting point melts you gotta sacrifice the crucible . Let me know how the crucibles go

    I really enjoy your channel, you're a man of all trades. I'm looking foward to get into casting. But, it seems I came late to the party. I saw you have a few reproduction list in your channel. Any I should start with? Greetings from Argentina!

      Hello Dano , i would start with some burner video to see what kind of burner system will work best for you . and go from there , i have not had time to put together a playlist on casting

    How much do those white ones you recommend? And where to buy I just had a hole in my second crucible today I had no Idea they wear down. Also do they sell already seasoned crucibles?

    @NOBOX7 Do you pre-heat or otherwise cure the fire clay crucibles before use? I wasn't able to tell from the video (probably failure on my part). Keep up the good work man.

    • @NOBOX7
      @NOBOX7  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes it should be pre heated to 220 F for 2 hours , its good to leave them in the kitchen oven from cold start up to temp of warm on the setting . the first one i did not pre heat and it broke

    what about hacking together an arc furnace? cody's lab used one to refine aluminium as far as i can remember. a graphite curicible and a rod shoud do the trick. electricity is a problem tho

    What are your thought on pure graphite crucibles? Have you ever tried one

    • @NOBOX7
      @NOBOX7  Před 2 lety +3

      I dont own an induction oven so i havnt botherd to get one , graphite burns in oxygen so it doesnt last long in a furnace like , so that is why you see them used in induction oven where not much air can get to it . the graphite clay crucibles hold up a little longer because the clay shields the graphite from air

    have you check mbmmllc channel? he did some progress on crucible making those "little prymids" by using slightly different flux formula. worth a look, won't waste your time.
    in terms of burners, you are far ahead of him. which, I guess his flux formula really lower the melting temperature of e-scrap.
