It's fascinating that spatial audio has evolved into this. It has been around since at least the early 90's with QSound, which was used in some video games and a handful of CD albums. Now the processing is done by a tiny microchip embedded in a wireless earbud using any audio input the user wants.
To be honest, H1 can't do this kind of computational audio. What Apple does is actually trying to render spatially-mastered tracks on the player device using the surround sound algorithm that allows them to simulate how the sounds propagate and change spatially. AirPods simply use the gyroscopes to measure how your head moves and the player device changes the spatial render parameters to produce spatially transformed sounds and play through the buds.

That's a very good way to explain the spatial audio trickery. I think the question I have is...how do they position something in front or behind you. How do two drivers make sound come from the front right versus the back right? Or is that just left up to you to decide, like the spinning dancer optical illusion?
I'm pretty sure it tries to mimic the shape of your ear. Because of how your ear is shaped, audio coming from behind has a distinct difference from audio in front of you. Changing the eq/sound profile of the audio can mimic this
