  • In this episode of Back in the Garage, I show you how to remove and install the fuel tanks on a KTM 990 Adventure Bike. Knowing how to remove and install the fuel tanks on one of these bikes is essential as most routine maintenance will require removal of both tanks. I also install the Rottweiler Snap Out Air Filter upgrade.

    Thanks for all the vids. Nobody looks forward to pulling the tanks on these bikes, but at least there isn't any little cheap plastic tabs to break. I highly recommend the stud mod for those lower front crash bar bolts. Game changer.

    Hard to work on these bikes, but definitely rewarding when you hit the trails. Best bike I have ever owned!!!

      PITA to work on but a lot of fun to ride.

    Great step by step video that a gorilla could follow. Speaking of which, I'm doing this job shortly to change the oil. Do both sides need to come off for that? I'd like to install the oil change hose mod that eliminates the need to remove the tank(s) from what I understand. That Rottweiler plate to ease glovebox removal would be good to have too. And ditch the crashbar many say cause more damage than they save but I don't believe it enough to actually remove them. They already saved my tanks from scarring up when the wind blew my bike over in the parking lot.

    What's up friend.
    I have some doubts about the tank drain hoses and the vacuum hoses. Do you think you could give me some sketch or illustration of the correct way to install them? I bought my motorcycle used and it doesn't have the hoses mentioned.
    Thank you.

    Appreciate the videol, but you made it look easy. It was a bitch but where things went a bit haywire was I did not remove the entire sides, leaving the fairings on. Not sure why but nothing wanted to line up. For now crash bars are not on as I was solo and needed an extra set if hands to help line things up. Good videos!

      By the way, my 2011 990 Dakar is for sale, 21k miles. I am going back to Jap, but this is an amazing bike!

    Thanks Mario, do you have to remap your computer when putting on the rottweiler intake? Oh did you record the install? Also did you notice a power difference ? Thanks again Mario

    • @2WR
      @2WR  Před 2 lety

      Air intake only? No. That said, my bike was remapped (had a Super Duke map on it??) back in the fall. My friend that owns tpituning.com mapped it for me. It's WAY better than it was but still a bit of a flat spot from 4300-5000rpms. Aside from having the wrong map on it, it's got an aftermarket exhaust (sorta) had the SAS deleted, and the 02 sensors removed. Finally rode it last night since installing the new air intake (not a Rottweiler as you see in the video) and it's way peppier now than it was. Now that I have the new intake one, I'll take it back to John to have it remapped and try to get rid of the flat spot.

      Hey Mario, I pulled the tanks on my 990 last week… quick question, the right side there is a black hose close to the top front of the tank… I assume it’s a vent and goes to atmosphere… ( it has a clamp on it about 2 “ from the end, but I don’t remember pulling it off of anything ) Can you confirm, or tell me where I went wrong? TIA

    Now we know why maintenance cost a fortune on those 990 ADV’s if it’s done by the dealer.
