My God, i had an Uncle named Phil who behaved just like this. Every single thing that fell out of his mouth was pure cringe and everyone in his vicinity would look unbearably uncomfortable which made it 10x worse. But he was totally and utterly oblivious. He once stood up at my Cousins wedding and gave a 5 minute speech about his observations on pigeons which he could see outside of the window. It was so insane that everyone laughed hysterically. He pointed out that pigeons were not a laughing matter. Totally bonkers.
When he tries to bribe Malcolm and says "I was just kidding" when turned down, is a case of Schroedinger's Douchebag. He's either "just joking" or completely serious, but we don't know until Malcolm responds 😂 (Although we know he's serious regardless)

Probably one of the most underrated Chris Lilley characters. And what’s so funny is I read Phil is suppose to live in Bray Park, which is the suburb I live in. Idk if it was actually filmed there, but the fact I know someone who lives near me who acts like this is uncanny. Typical goofy North Brisbane behaviour 😂
'We Can Be Heroes: Finding the Australian of the Year' is the best of all the Chris Lilley series, in my opinion. The characters are all just so well done!
The "Tommy Emmanuel's" & "Hoodoo Gurus" music selection is a very clever joke. It's so accurate for this character is amazing. Even though it was small, one of my favorite things in the whole series.

It's perfectly OK to play a woman or girl, but if you really want to write about black/Asian people etc., hire actors who are from those ethnicities. It's only natural that these things are frowned upon, and he knew that before he made those shows.

Saw Chris at a servo in dunsborough WA about a year and a bit ago. I froze like an idiot and didn’t process it was him till i was paying for fuel. Stung me that i didn’t get at least say gday to him.
I remember watching this on DVD from an ABC shop! All the characters from ‘We can be heroes’ are THE BEST! Please bring them back somehow? 😂 Even Pat, I’d be willing to accept a plot hole!
What I think is brilliant about the show is how you nailed the very subtle differences between states. Even within the broad class distinctions of Daniel, Phil, Pat and Ja'mie, you make them sound specifically like they're from that state and not the others.
The way his wife looks at him when hes talking is so good😂 she just finds him insufferable and is so over hearing about his story lol great acting on her part
Chris Lilley is a great observer of humanity. He is able to take the most annoying, strange, sad and pathetic characteristic and make a believable person out of them. Of course he takes it into the absurd which makes it gold.
