Delft Clay sand casting a bronze Celtic knot pendant.
Using electrical wire to make a model that then is cast into a bronze pendant, using the Delft Clay casting system.
I thoroughly enjoy Delft Clay sand casting silver, bronze and copper jewellery.
So I’ve made this video to show a simple technique to produce a Celtic knot using the Delft Clay casting process.
This Delft Clay casting technique makes casting jewellery quick, cheap and simple to learn with surprising results after some basic techniques have been grasped.

hi Shaun, Yes these knots have a very icon look easy to do with electrical wire if you have the patience to figure it out, I seem to spend most of my time practising with string. Cheers Nick

i’ve been meaning to try this again with home-made bronze to see if I could get it to work. This was cast using bronze grain from Rio grande really nice stuff and not too expensive think I paid £23 in total including delivery from the US for 450 grams … N

I haven't got any Delft Clay yet, only petrabond. I know it is courser than delft, doesnt give such good results, especially on fine detail, but I'm looking forward to trying it.
i’ve not tried petrabond I’ve been meaning to get some to try out some larger castings … N

I really should make up a flask like yours - the standard rings annoy me with the alignment notch, rather than tabs for a more definite alignment.
thanks Peter, I really struggled when I started out using those aluminium casting rings. They were so tight fitting when put together I had to lever them apart, more often than not damaging the delicate cavity within….. Square sided flasks seem to align more simply and accurately…. A home-made wooden flask could be better than some of the commercial ones on market …..all the best…. Nick

hi Jim, it’s called a multi jet, you have to pay extra for it.
it doesn’t come part of the kit unfortunately. Great to have for larger amounts of smelting …. all the best … Nick

Have you tried any of the less expensive alternatives to Deft clay? If so, results?
Great video! Really enjoyed the audio track.
Not tried petrobond, watched lots of reviews and it seems to vary a lot in quality depending on grain size. I’m so in love with Delft Clay I feel no need to look elsewhere … I would like to scale up and try casting sculptures one day and maybe then I could be tempted away with a cheaper alternative … N
What’s the difference between melting bronze and brass?
Hi Hinkypunk, it feels relatively safe to melt bronze in a home workshop as is mostly made of copper and tin. However brass is a lot different as it contains zinc and sometimes lead so the fumes can be a lot more toxic and I would not feel safe playing around in a hobby workshop with potentially risky fumes to deal with … N
Hi can someone tell me why my sand flows out when i make the air vents? How can i stick the sand in?
Hi Alessandro, i’ve never had that problem with Delft Clay it’s very sticky and packs down well. When mixing your own oil bonded sand this is the main attribute that needs to be perfected … N
What kind of torch setup do you use?
Hi Bearfoot, in this video I’m using My “Smiths Little Torch” that burns incredibly hot on a mixture of oxygen and propane … N
I'm new to pouring. Every time I "pound" the clay into the mold, the clay "cracks" in certain places. It usually doesn't crack or split, where I was using the hammer. When I add more clay, it still happens. Is it possible I'm pounding too hard on the hammer? Thank you in advance.
I always use a solid metal former that helps hold the clay in place when packing. I don’t think you can overpack a mould apart from damaging a delicate model or packing too much from one side preventing the model from releasing easily. I tend not to use a hammer directly on the clay, I prefer using a wooden block that I hit with a hammer this helps spread the load evenly and prevents accidentally hitting the frame of the mould … N

What specifically is the torch set up you use?
hi Christopher, some tools are well worth spending the money on… I have a Smith’s Little Torch set up on oxygen and propane. I use a company called Hobby Gas for my oxygen supplier. it’s worth using a reputable seller for this torch as there are a lot of counterfeit variations on the market that might be dangerous…. all the best… Nick
What type of electrical wire and length did you use?
hi David, this wire was stripped out of an old 240v extension lead. I think I use about 2ft of it … nice and strong but flexible to weave … N

I had to practice macramé knots and braids with string a lot first until I could get my head around what I wanted … good luck with it … cheers … Nick
I have discovered you need 3 ft of electrical wire. That gives you enough extra wire to pull the knot tight. The wire has to be flexible enough to pull the knot tight. I am in the USA, so a used 12 gauge wire from a 3 wire power cable. Like you a stripped the wires out and then formed the knot. I had to then look at the video of the back of the knot just before you added the wax to see how to finish the knot off. It worked well. I am planning to use this project as a way to teach high students the basics of lost wax casting. Thanks again for a great video, much appreciated. @@Nickscreativestuff
