- Delft Clay casting ring shanks is possible with a large casting flask.
Making a delft clay casting flask is easy with some basic tools and some scrap metal offcuts.
In this video I show how to make a casting flask, a simple pattern for a ring shank and then using the Delft Clay casting system i cast a silver ring shank to bend into a chunky ring.
If you would like to know more about this simple Delft Clay sand casting system, I made a more
in-depth two-part video that I hope will help beginners get into this fabulous technique.
Here’s a link for both of them …

Nick, thanks so much! This is going to help me so much with my sand casting!
thanks Shaun nice to hear that, great fun to be had with sandcasting … N
Excellent all the way through the process... Nice production... Great product!
cheers LTD, a very satisfying process. Have been meaning to try it again as a cuff bracelet, maybe next video if I can get it sorted … N
I love your way of working. Many thanks from Morocco.
Houcine
thanks for your comment Houcine from Morocco, The leaves came out well … I do so love nature … N
Your creative talent never ceases to amaze me! Beautful!
thanks for that Tammie, I do like to admire beauty in nature … Nick
Beautiful ring, thank you🤗👍.
cheers Alice, nice to admire beauty in nature … Nick
I was wondering if it would fill the mould being long and narrow. Nice.
We had a Dog called Bud, and when he passed, me and my Bruv both planted a Buddelia in the garden and put some ashes down. He kept his trained back and under control. Mine went everywhere. Still is. So I have an abundance of leaves. Cheers Nick.
i’ve been meaning to see if this will work with a cuff bracelet although it would consume a lot of silver. butterflies love my Buddelia … N
Excellent video! Thank you for your taking the time and work to make and post it.
The casting flask is outstanding as well...
thanks for that c. monkey, just all a bit of fun, love having the space, time and ability to have a go at make stuff. cheers … Nick
Once again I am awed by all aspects of your craft! Much respect, your American friend.
thanks for that American Monty, much respect to you for commenting on my videos i’m sure it’s helped to get to this little channel of mine going. I’m amazed how quickly it’s picked up such momentum cheers Nick
Oh and the pour....smooooth as brother.
I don’t recommend pouring as slow as it looks in this video, I slowed the footage right down because it’s my favourite bit and looked great when watching at this leisurely pace … cheers … Nick
@@Nickscreativestuff yeah I have been pouring way too slow myself. I am gunna try get it as quick and smooth as your own pouring skills. Pretty sure this is without a doubt one of the best pours I've seen.
hi Scarlet, yes it’s an important part to get right with Delft clay casting.
you have to sort of dash it into the funnel, at its most hottest moment keeping lots of heat on the spout of the crucible. in hindsight I should have included the real-time footage as well as the slowed version. after filming I was surprised what my little iPhone camera had captured, might have to try the slow motion setting on the phone next time … thanks … Nick
Very very cool
Nice one Joyce … N
I just subscribed to your channel. I Love your approach to keep things simple and your creativity. Besides that I really like your music in your video's but can't find any info about it. Could you please give some info about it? Hope to see (and hear) more video's from you in the future. Kind regards.
Hi Bob thanks for your comment and sub … Nice to hear you like the music I’ve had some harsh comments in the past, suppose everyone has different tastes. I’ve now started adding a sort of disclaimer saying “ being a voiceless video if you don’t like that music you can turn the sound off.” Editing my videos on my iPad I use an app called LumaFusion. I pay for an add-on called storyblocks which gives me a massive database full of sound and image that can be used in videos. This is where I get all my music from. The first track in this video is called “barn music” and the second is “another time and place” … All the best to you … Nick
Awesome demo Nic
thanks for that Peter, have been meaning to play with this idea for a long time … Nick
Very cool! 👍
thanks for that Eduard … N
Very nice video.
thanks for that Ann … N
Nice one mate. And here I was thinking about buying rectangular wire to make some ring's. Glad this popped up. Change of plans. Just read the other comment about the handle. Will weld one of those up myself too I think. Cheers mate.
thanks for that Scarlet, The casting came out well, The only problem I had was it was a bit thick and very difficult to bend into a ring neatly.
i’ll have to try it a bit thinner next time. I do find it satisfying trying to make my own tools. More time than money is a big incentive to have a go … cheers … Nick
I've got plenty of time and little money myself mate. Making what I don't have to buy is a good way to go I reckon. I kinda like the idea of the paddle pop stick and the thickness it provided. I was thinking i can just file it thinner if needed for different rings but that would be a good thickness for bloke's ring's. I get carried away with browsing for tools and forget to try making my own things for most of the week until my day off 🤣 and then I'm glad i stumble across things like this during the evening. Looking forward to the next video.
Hi Scarlet, I find it tricky getting the balance right between thickness and pourability .
i’ve had a lot of failures by going to thin. The lollipop stick dimensions work well and I often use that as a comparison being 1.8 x 10mm in side. i’ve been meaning to try a cuff bracelet length sometime however looking at the cost of silver these days is a bit offputting. maybe one day if CZcams goes in the right direction now i’ve been monetised on here. all the best … Nick
This is a fantastic idea for rings, well done. The Ring looks fantastic, elvish lord of the rings like, really beatiful.
I wish this delft clay were not so damn expensive, I live 30 min from the Netherlands and this stuff in cheaper in the US than here!
Thanks for that Sierra. Yes a simple way to make a ring, I do love nature and its natural beauty. I quite agree it’s a shame Delft Clay is so expensive, there’s not many cheap tools and materials in the jewellery industry … cheers … Nick
@@Nickscreativestuff Is there no recipe to DIY delft clay ?
an alternative product is called Petrobond however, I’ve heard it comes in a variety of qualities so you never know what you’re getting when buying off the web. A traditional recipe is a mix of fine silica sand, bentone clay and oil. I have come across an idea suggesting mixing tile grout and oil. so simple I’ve been meaning to give it a go. another video in the making if it works … N
@@Nickscreativestuff I mean for delft clay, petrobond is different in surface quality.
I think the original Delft Clay recipe is kept top secret. maybe well worth experimenting and trying some of the recipes for oil bonded sand from the web. I’ve seen this company www.sdtsengineering.co.uk sells Bentone 34 and I’ve been meaning to ring them to pick the brains on the subject … N
Great piece of work,no question, but a little elaborate with the flask no?
hi William thanks for the comment, i’ve wanted to try and cast this type of ring shank for a long time. Being a hobbyist with more time than money to spend, I thought I would have a go at making my own flask rather than buying something that might not suit. with hindsight I wish I had made it long enough to try and cast a cuff bracelet length … all the best Nick
😎👍
May I ask where you found or how you built the casting ladle crucible/holder you are using? It looks much safer than anything I’ve used or am able to buy.
if I can save money by making something that seems expensive for what it is, i’d rather have a go and save the money for something else.
I welded this handle together out of a couple of pieces of scrap metal
and used a few stainless steel bolts to hold the crucible in place.
Just have to pay for the silver that seems to have gone right up lately.
cheers … Nick

Nick,
Thank you for your fast reply.
Your design is one of the best I’ve seen. In my mind using tongs on a loose hot crucible is a recipe for injury. Your creation certainly addresses this issue.
I suspect your design may be patentable and at the very least sale-able. In fact I’d be interested in purchasing one if that’s possible and the price reasonable.
Sincerely,
Steve

hi steve thanks for that, A few people have asked if I sell what I make, unfortunate I have to say no I don’t sell stuff. being a hobbyist in my workshop i’ve never sold anything on the Internet just the odd bit of jewellery to friends and family. My main job and income is from being a fabricator for firewok.co.uk … I do hope one day that I get to 10,000 subscribers which will give me a chance to have a merchandising opportunity on CZcams. what I do recommend is asking around in your local community and neighbours to find a local handyperson in a shed to make stuff for you. most Metal workers are happy to help out when asked … all the best …Nick
how the leaves didnt get mashed/squashed luck ?
nice build
Hi little hills, it’s all dependent on how tight the sand is packed in the mould with soft items like this … N
open q and a
has anyone tried to dust the sand before pressing it in to try get finer finish on the work peace ?
not sure about that but original Delft Clay is pretty fine, especially when packed tightly when using a hard model. sometimes parting powder is used on a model to help release from the clay. however I don’t notice an improvement on the surface finish. Delft Clay is expensive but fabulous stuff. I would love to see somebody make an alternative that works as well out of easily sourced materials … N
Great video…do you make theses in aluminium?… would it not be easier to cut and lighter to handle? Do you make them to order?
hi Kizzy, being a hobbyist I tend to make things out of what I have around me and being a welder i have an abundance of steel offcuts to play with. i’ve often thought or dreamt of having a merchandise store selling bits and bobs I could possibly make however setting it up would be more work than I can handle at the moment so a possible project for the future … all the best … Nick
@@Nickscreativestuff no worries 😉
Are these frames for sale
sorry Jacqueline, I don’t make stuff to sell … just for the fun of it … N
