Is Ponta Delgada, Azores Worth Visiting? (Half a day in the archipelago's bustling capital) 🇵🇹

- From Terceira, I flew to the island of Sao Miguel for some sightseeing around the capital city of the archipelago of the Azores. Having previously visited Ponta Delgada in 2018, I fell in love with its mosaic cobblestone streets, ocean breezes, stunning harbour, and vibrant nightlife.
That said, the current reality of travelling during a health crisis meant that most of the sights, restaurants, and attractions were shuttered (and visiting in fall didn't help either). Nevertheless, I was able to enjoy a relaxing overnight layover in the capital, spending my time walking along its beautiful waterfront and admiring some of Portugal's most stunning churches and cathedrals.

Thanks for sharing your experience in my lovely small city of ponta delgada it is a little paradise here on earth quite, peaceful and very safe to walk in the middle of the night which you can’t find now a days in states or elsewhere 👍❤️🇵🇹🇺🇸
I agree! I love Ponta Delgada and I hope many more tourists will visit. Sao Miguel Island has so much to offer.
Hey not to sound weird but can you li st me some names of the universities of Ponta delgada.
Hey Joe, how's it visiting your city in early March? Thinking of coming for a week, not sure if that's a good time but it's when I'm free.
I'm visiting Ponta Delgada in August. I can't wait!
Have fun! it’s incredible!!
Looks like a nice place! Thank you for sharing.😁
It was! Thank you for watching! 😎
You might like to know that those "brick accents" (?) that you've mentioned at minute 4:22 aren't bricks at all. The historical buildings that you've shown in this video were made with the local basalt stone and not with clay bricks. And the same applies to the cobblestones used in the artwork found on the pavement. I'm glad that you enjoyed your visit.
Thank you for clarifying! Very interesting 🙏
I was there Jan 2020. 5 nights, had a great time, the food was amazing.
Totally agree - it’s a mystery why this place isn’t more popular than it is 🤷♂️
@@DrifterDave No one knows about it probably
Sensacional essa cidade😍😍😍👏
Thank you for watching! 😎
Wow it's a shame you ended up eating at Subway of all places 😬. However it looks like a beautiful place and I would mind the 7-8 degree weather. I like it cool vs hot, but being from Calgary I thought you would feel more prepared lol
I just didn't dress for any cold weather, whatsoever! I had originally planned to visit Cyprus and other warm locales, but the borders closed due to obvious reasons! But I was happy to battle through the cold 😎
I’m going to Lisbon in May and I’m considering adding the Azores to my list of places to see out there
DO IT! Madeira too, if you’re able. It’s an amazing part of the world.
@@DrifterDave I’ll definitely look into that! I have absolutely nothing planned when I go over there my idea was to just book a flight/hostel and then from explore and get lost on adventure, I do that a lot when I travel and it’s such a great thing for me personally because planning detailed stuff to do makes me cry 😂 weird I know
Our last voyage is at ponta delgada, quite and jice place
I hope you enjoyed your trip!
👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!
Awesome vid! No "san" in Portuguese though. And "são" is just saint in English.
My bad! Thanks for the clarification 😎 I definitely love the Azores - next time, I want to check out Flores, as I've heard it's amazing.
What would you recommend doing in May for a day? We are looking to explore!
Definitely spend a few hours soaking up the city. Start at the waterfront at the whale sculpture, and head out by foot to the Cathedral, admiring the cobblestone mosaic streets of Ponta Delgada. Spend at least an hour getting lost down the narrow cobblestone alleyways and discovering colonial churches and the city's many plazas. Make sure you have a passionfruit juice with a view of the water. If you're on Sao Miguel for a few days, be sure to arrange a tour to Sete Cidades & the Furnas areas (or rent a car). Make stops at the pineapple factory, the Goreana tea center, and spend some time exploring the many quaint villages on what is by far one of the most charming islands on the planet. Enjoy!
@@DrifterDave Awesome advice, We only have one day so trying too make the most of it. Thank you!
@@foleyexploring I would suggest taking the tour to Furnas, in that case! They will pick you up and drop off at the airport or your hotel. It’s about €45 for the tour, from what I recall. You’ll eat roast pig cooked in lava rock, swim in hot springs, and experience all the geothermal activity of the island. However, if you’re looking more for laid back Portuguese culture, stick to Ponta Delgada and perhaps make side trips to the Pineapple factory and the tea plantation.
Praia da Vitoria Portugal
Vs
Ponta Delgada
Which one should i explore? Worth travelling.
I’ve answered this question on your other comment (Praia do Vitoria vlog!)
There are many legal ways of crossing the street to portas do mar like crosswalks!
I used the underground passageway by the parkade 🤷♂️
you're wearing a T-shirt like in August and telling us that you feel frozen !!!???? 😂😂😂
I came from the Canary Islands so I wasn't quite prepared for the difference in temperature 😂 And I didn't pack any cold weather clothes. Oh well.
Awesome 😍💋 💝💖♥️❤️
Thank you! 🙏
Nice effort - but I get a feeling this doesn’t do justice of how beautiful the island really is & the generous locals who thrive on tourism. You’re travelling during the peak of a global threat to health - so yes, businesses were taking precautions. Sorry the weather or the necessities didn’t meet your expectations - I feel like you could’ve sold some more of the positives for sure. But highly recommend everyone continue researching their trips to the island of Sao Miguel, you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks for your comments. This was just a pit-stop on my wider trip around the Azores. I had previously visited Sao Miguel back in 2018 (before I started vlogging) and had a great experience visiting Sete Cidades, Furnas, and experiencing the best that Ponta Delgada had to offer. However, during this trip no tours were operating and my experiences were, as you can see, quite limited. In no way is this vlog intended to be definitive - it's a vlog, so a video diary of my daily travels - not a polished travel guide or anything of the sort.
Taxi is 4 euro to the town wtf
I’ve been to Ponta Delgada twice and it’s always been a 9-10 Euro fare to the city center. If you’re paying 4 Euros, you aren’t going very far 🤷♂️
meh
Not impressed? It's better in summer!
@@DrifterDave . Haha! I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!
