UNISTRUT SOLAR PANEL MOUNT: How to install solar panels Using Unistrut/Superstrut

  • A rooftop solar installation means that the solar panels are mounted directly to your roof. Installing rooftop solar panels may be your automatic choice because of how common they have become, however, there are a few factors to consider before moving forward. There are certain criteria that your roof and house must meet in order for a rooftop solar installation to make sense, both financially and structurally:
Your roof does not have a clear South, East or West-facing exposure.Orientation is extremely important when it comes to installing solar panels. If your roof can’t accommodate the ideal angle for installation that the panels require, or there are too many obstacles creating shade, then ground-mounted solar panels would certainly be the right choice for you.

you can also use a spring nut, and hold the square washer for the mid clamps and for end clamps a spring nut and a L i mean less bolts and easy to uninstall in the future if you need to. Nice video and good alternatives

Excellent video, thank you. I am using unistrut to mount my four 180 watt panels to the roof of my hightop van. I was concerned because if I had to have space between my panels for "Z" brackets, they would be very close to taking up the entire 10 feet of the unistrut, which I am mounting between 2 gutter mount racks front and rear. (My panels will be mounted across the van just like you show yours) I will have room to get under the panels with a wrench to tighten them to the unistrut so, I will have no spacing between panels and, I will not have to spend like $40 on "Z" brackets I do not need. I might add some blue locktite to the bolts that go into the unjistrut but, other than that, I am happy I found your helpful video which just made my job much easier and cheaper. Thank you.

The sliding nut you are using can be inserted from the top and turned 90 degrees to seat, the nylon washer keeps it high in the track after insertion. The ears sit in the track to prevent the insert from turning.

Hey, thanks I’m great full for you sharing your knowledge. In my situation ( non roof mount ) do you think the mid gap is important for wind ? We get occasional thunderstorms with 60 mph winds. Going to Home Depot tomorrow to pick up the struts. So far I need to mount like 1200 watts of panels.

Just what I needed, thank you. You seem to need to leave the gap between the solar panel and the Unistrut slightly loose to allow them to slide along. I was wondering, without the center clamp connected to pin them down would these not rattle on a windy day? The end struts would only clamp the ends down but the center would still be a weak point (in terms of rattling).

Aluminum is a soft, ferrous metal and it is a weak metal which will eventually strip out, 100% of the time and especially, on torque situations like this. Please, place brackets like a picture frame around the frame aluminum then bolt through. You will not kill so done when it flies off your roof like a kite.

Just a thought, before mounting the struts mount panels first that way you can use the holes in strut
and from the "backside" you will be able to line up and tighten bolts on the panel. Leave a 2 or 3 inch gap
in panels when mounting to struts. The gaps will be used so you can get a lag bolt down into roof joist.

I thought about using foam tape or even two sided tape between panels, to create a seal between them, to keep leaves from building up between and on the panels. There would be less chance of a leak if they are sealed between , I have 2kw I want to put on my roof, but haven't found a cheap way to mount unistrut to the roof! Maybe simple as a block of treated 4x4! But I want it to last, any roof attachment idea's??

It depends on your roof. If its regular shingles then almost anything will do. Like a Z mount. Just make sure you use lots of sealant. If it is tile then you will need special tile roof mounts. Not horribly expensive but still around $5-10 each. They go under the tiles and mount to the roof studs. they also have some

Trying this right now, using 7/8 Unistrut. Hitting a snag. The struts are mounted to the roof with lag bolts, but now the sliding pieces can't get past the head of the lag bolt. Not only can we not slide the panels into position, we can't even set them up so they won't slide at all. Trying to set up four 250 SanTan panels side-by-side.
    What are we missing?
