    But what of the open world in Dragon Age: Inquisition?

    This game sucks. It's an offline MMORPG with a main story as short as Skyrim, except it forces you to do stupid vanilla WoW quests for 6 hours in between the nine (yep, nine) main story quests.
    There's zero tactics or strategy in the gameplay, and the more you try to control the characters, the more the terrible AI fucks up the most unbelievably simple tasks, and you can't customize the AI at all, so it makes all of the combat's "challenge" not about fighting the monsters, it's about overcoming the awful AI.
    Also, hold R to do cool poses. What a joke. Worst game I've played in a year.

    You know what, I don't think I actually have a single problem with any kind of race, gender, sexuality, etc. IN video games.
    It's devs/journalists/pr/etc. acting like it's a big deal in video games are what I have a problem with. Gloating over having a gay couple in a game won't make social "justice" be served any sooner, it just makes the romance seem like it was shoved in the game unnecessarily, when maybe it WAS significant. It destroys any genuine value diversity has.
    I'd love to see devs make a game diverse, but that means calling out journalists for how petty they are when complimented.

    • @stegomasaurus6737
      @stegomasaurus6737 Před 9 lety +25

      You hit the nail on the head. My problem with this emphasis on diversity is that it's used as a tool to look sensitive/progressive, rather than to make a story or characters more interesting for the sake of it. It's like people put a gay character (for example) in just to confirm to their audience that they're not homophobic, and that character won't serve any other purpose.
      I've always thought the best way to show diversity in a story is to have that kind of stuff exist, but have the story as a whole not care about those traits. For example there's the (completely unneeded) push to get strong heroines in more stories. If I were writing a story with a heroine (which I am) I wouldn't make the gender a focal point at all. I would want the heroine to be known for, say, determination, courage, a fun sense of humour, WHAT SHE ACTUALLY DOES... there's no need to call so much attention to something as trivial as gender or sexual orientation in a good story. No need for a dragging sub-plot about a homosexual romance in a story about an intergalactic war, am I right?

      In which case, we need to call out the press for propping up Dorian the way he was.
      It's a big achievement for Gaider, we get it. So is being the Lead Writer of the series for three games and helping manage a writing staff that did that same kind of thing with more subtlety. I would think, anyway.
      Then again, Obsidian usually swoops in after stuff like this and brings some down-to-earth writing to the table.

    • @Uberdust5
      @Uberdust5 Před 9 lety +2

      The romance options in the new game are pretty ass in my opinion. All of the characters that I wanted my avatars to fall in love with, I couldn't. Either because of some race or sexual orientation bullshit, or the character in question simply not being an option to the player. I hope Dragon Age 4 will have more variety in this area...or at least give more options to Dragon Age 3 through DLC.

    Fuck's sake, Bioware. The dialogue wheel's bad enough already, but then they had to put those indicator diagrams on each choice in case some fuckwit doesn't understnad that "Fight me" is an aggressive reply. Deus Ex: Human Revolution got its conversation system perfect first time (general tone of reply + detailed response when you mouse over), so why are Bioware still stuck with this half-baked system? HR's dialogue, especially with the Social aug, made you really think and concentrate- which is probably why no-one else has the balls to copy it.

      The dialogue wheel is a patented system, as far as I know. As in, they filed a patent for that. Doing something like that isn't uncommon, as a lot of the programs and systems used in a game's production cycle are often middleware developed by outsiders and then used on a license.

    I'm confused.
    You say the story is morally interesting, the companions are good (with exceptions) and crafting is intricate. I concur.
    But then you spend half the video listing fault after fault after fault, all points that I completely agree with and that bothered me as well.
    And yet your end result is that this game kicks ass?
    Personally I'd give it a meh/10. Regardless of interesting companions, I find the casualized combat and areas full of MMO tier grinding increasingly hard to swallow.

    • @TheRageaholic
      @TheRageaholic  Před 9 lety +29

      Well, the only _major_ faults I itemize are the dialogue wheel, which BioWare needs to ditch, like, _yesterday._ The technical issues. And, of course, the batshit fetch-quest requirements.
      Dragon Age: Origins suffered from all but one of those faults. Yet it was still utterly superb because it managed to put the knotted twists and turns of the narrative at the forefront. Dragon Age: Inquisition, _somehow_ manages to spotlight its narrative - one of BioWare's better efforts in recent memory - while expanding the scope of the world in the process. So I say it is absolutely a worthy sequel. Not necessarily superior to the first... but worthy of being considered part of the same series. Which is more than you can say for Electric Boogaloo.
      I was fairly careful to note that it isn't perfect. Far from it. But absolutely playable, and a hell of a lot of fun, when it's rolling on all cylinders.

      _Love_ the idea of the time limit. Makes the player much more authentic and reflexive. Don't care as much for how obviously 'sarcastic / aggressive / generic good guy' the responses are, however. The dialogue choices themselves are as bad, if not worse, than Mass Effect in that way.

    • @EmperorOfLols
      @EmperorOfLols Před 9 lety +1

      *****
      Not sure if i love the time limit. Oh sure, it works for the distilled dialog since there isn't much to read (and is good for the developers because you have to pay less words to the voice actor), but if this was an old school roleplaying game like Planescape Torment with a shitload of choices and text then the time limit is "shoot yourself in the foot" counter productive.
      I dont know what exactly happened happened to Pacing in games where taking your time to think and roleplay properly is like poison for developers.
      I do however find the idea of a Global/Omnipresent Time Limit better than just a TL for dialog exclusively, because at least the urgency is consistent.

    • @MrAlexanderLang
      @MrAlexanderLang Před 4 lety

      I dunno, in my books sequel should be several steps ahead of its predecessor not back, and Inquisition isn't ahead, it may be when compared to idiocy that was Dragon Age 2 but a tap-dancing cockroach would be better than Dragon Age 2 , personally i hated majority of my companions in Inquisition, i really wished murder knife from Origins back, i usually try and be goody too shoes in games but some of these characters just made me want to rip their spines out vertebra at a time.
      There are a lot more issues with this game when compared to Origins that go beyond their shared faults, things like : The drastic change of art direction and obvious graphical censorship, The continuation of dialog wheel (there is not even a single instance of anything bold it's all sterile and bland), The combat a hybrid between hack'n slash and tactics which makes no sense i'm not saying Origins had best combat mechanics but choice to make Origins more like RTS and less like action packed hack'n slash appealed to me more than what we got in Inquisition i guess this one can be boiled down to preference some change was required but some things like the ability to tweek party A.I. in order to make it suit you, the pause option to make your companions better use the environment to their advantage all had its place within Origins, whilst we don't have that option in Inquisition A.I. is retarded, pause function has no use in hack'n slash games, the main villain is laughable, main story is good only as a setup for the next game.
      In summery there are a lot of changes made to Inquisition which may seem small but make this game feel as if it's not Dragon Age, it feels like wolf wearing sheep skin,
      Origins was game more akin to Neverwinter Nights, and Baldurs Gate, dark interesting mature, whilst Inquisition is generously awarded (by me) of being more akin to Risen than Dragon Age Origins, colorful, almost cheerful, and above all PC and childish.

      ***** Plagiarized how? The games are based on books published in the early 1990s, with first 'The Witcher' short story published in 1986. Inquisition is an improvement on DA2, but Witcher 3 even more highlights how much Bioware has fallen - the game as an RPG is miles ahead of DA:I. Bioware needs to stop designing their games using the same template since the Mass Effect 1 days. Every single game following ME1 has been designed in the same Paragon/Renegade way, with endless amount of pointless filler, and more and more game systems trying to compete with Assassins' Creed.

      ***** Firstly, massive fan of yours. You're easily one of my favourite - if not my absolute favourite - CZcams personalities and I hope you keep up the uncompromising work for years to come (even if you do have the tendency to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach towards your comments section in regards to dissenters even if they're amongst your fanbase and are simply disagreeing in an amicable way. Though having said that, I guess that's just part of your style and you wouldn't be the same otherwise). Yes, I am brown-nosing and you freakin' love it really!
      I'm also aware of your reasons for boycotting of The Witcher and even though I don't follow this path myself your reasoning for aforementioned boycott is totally understandable and reasonable as far as I'm concerned. Regardless, from my own personal standpoint I still think Wild Hunt is a sad reminder of what Bioware once was, plagiarism or not.
      You're right though. Dragon Age II is an absolute shocker. When it comes to the two Dragon Age sequels though I'd conclude that they're both very, very shitty games and Inquisition shouldn't be regarded with anymore respect than II and vice-a-versa. They're both crap games through-and-through and talking about which one is "superior" is like debating about which pile of shit smells the best. It's a dead franchise as far as I'm concerned.
      But to reiterate, keep up the amazing work. Already looking forward to what future, constructive rants you have in store!

Not to say it was a bad game, I quite enjoyed it, at least until I realized the advanced class I had taken for the mage (Knight Enchanter) was more boring than the combat in DA2, and actually was probably worse. Hit two buttons, win every fight. I ended up rerolling again and again, not finding any other class I enjoyed the look and play style of.

    F'in awesome review as always. Really like the way you juxtapose the negative with the positive; leaving me hanging to well in to the video whether you liked it or not! I agree, it is a return to form for the series. I take note of your point about how the narrative unfolds in the main story. Maybe they play tested it with-out the need for those rep points and felt that the story would be over too quickly compared to the amount of time you can spend exploring; and there is a lot to explore. As for the mounts, a nice idea; but I found that I didn't use them in the end, as i kept having to get on and off them fro the resources. That last point links in to the inability to have flying mounts in WoW's Warlord of Draenor, as Blizzard felt that having flying mounts would mean that players went through the content way too quickly; which they saw happen in Mists of Panderia. Still, I really enjoyed DA:I. I really don't know if the Witcher 3 is going to offer more. I think that it might look prettier; but no character customization (that I know of) compared to the character creation of DA:I, which is exquisite; and.. the story, will it be good enough. Well, we'll see. For now, though, DA:I is definitely worth experiencing.

However, where the fuck is my full on top down view from Origins? Still not there. Mounts are a slap on addition that aren't useful for much because when exploring I like to scavenge for supplies to craft, and I'm not hopping off the horse every time I need to pick a flower, especially when I can just fast travel to already visited places.

You can show me all the art you want, if your game doesn't live up all i'm left with is a nice poster for my fucking living room.

    That is why i hate people who keep bringing up elder scrolls has the best game series ever made because its open world 90% of people who say that have only played Skyrim. I don't care open world,sandbox or a straight line has long has it is good,works and makes sense with good characters and story.

    I'm still not interested. My tastes in RPG's tend more toward the sci-fi/post-apocalyptic side, if at all. What tends to scare me off is that Bioware's writing has this intangible aura of smugness to it. That, and their character's are almost impossible to take seriously.

    Thanks for the review, man.
    I'm still cautious about spending time and money on this game, though. Most of the videos I've seen on the 'Tube make the game look like and Oberlin course in gender studies and diversity. Not sure I want to reward that. But I appreciate the input.

    I love how I care more about the music in the outro than I do about the video itself. xD At least I know where my priorities are. I thought it was an Iced Earth song until Demons and Wizards popped up. Then I also realized it sounded like Iced Earth meets Blind Guardian... Then after googling the band, I realized that I was actually right in a way. Oh Jon, you sir are the king of gallops.
    Oh, and about the video. Dragon Age Inquisition: I thought it was pretty good. Yeah, glitchy as hell and the story itself isn't impressive in anyway, but I still love all of the characters and it's crafting system. Still going to go with Dragon's Dogma as the best dragon/monster slaying game while Dark Souls still has the best combat system I've seen in a game.

    I'm just not feeling DA:I. Maybe because when I played the first one it was a type of game I never played before. I loved the first game and always will, it is one of my favorite RPGs ever. I liked the second one but I just couldn't bring myself to do another playthrough of it and I understood peoples complaints after the fact. For me the third one just gives me that whole "been there, done that" feeling that I just can't seem to get past. It also doesn't help the dick move EA pulled with their Dragon Age Keep bullshit where if you wanted to have your story choices matter you had to make an account on that website because whatever you did in the first two games meant absolutely dick and if you wanted to use the keep you were forced to making an Origin account. I wouldn't have had a problem with this if I was going from my PS3 to a PS4, but seeing as how I played the series thus far on my PS3 my progress should have carried over. But nope, EA wants you to ave that Origin account. I just said "fuck it" and played on with its default story setting, but that still left a bad taste in my mouth.

    • @MrAlexanderLang
      @MrAlexanderLang Před 4 lety

      There is no tactics involved in Inquisition, it simply wasn't made for it, it's hack'n slash action-adventure game, the "tactical screen" they borrowed from Origins was so they can say : " hey we brought back a thing you liked", and it's true they did, but they forgot the ability to tweak party A.I. without it "tactical screen" has no use because companion A.I. is retarded, and rushing in guns blazing is usually more effective choice of the two, Origins combat was slow and felt sluggish in comparison but made sense, it was also as such in large part due because of animation a problem that could have been easily rectified since then.

    On the one hand its nice to be able to jump in Inquisition but on the other, where is the option to equip a secondary weapon? Very fine review Razorfist and I agree for the most point but one bug bear that this game has alongside both its predecessors is that the main enemies seem to level up with you so you'll be fighting the same darkspawn/bandits/demons from level 1 to 20. Thanks for posting on Christmas by the way :)

    Having finally finished inquisition I don't know why people bitch so much about dialogue wheels. Like do these people have such a limited understanding of a summary that they can't see how what the character says and the small snips from the wheel say still mean the same thing -.- Like really it's not that hard nor as drastic of a 'difference' between what you say and the wheel as people make it out to be. Which hearing bitching about a feature that pretty much does nothing but save you from navigating the same 5 dialogue options 10 times in a single conversation so you can ask all your questions and then pick from 3 maybe 4 final options of text most of which are just a single sentence which doesn't exactly create realistic dialogue when you have protag say a line and then every else say ten in response. The wheel works fine and it's descriptions of what you actually say are rarely inaccurate if you have even a decent understanding of the English language. Besides dragon age inquisiton has far greater flaws than a non-issue such as the wheel. Side quests which razerfist really should have talked about more but given how lackluster and boring they are I can see why he had a hard time doing so. Other than that good review.

    • @IgnoreMeImWrong
      @IgnoreMeImWrong Před 6 lety

      My annoyance is that occasionally you want to say something, but what is said is the exact opposite or isn't in the ballpark of anything in any small resemblance to the 'snip' that you were given.
      I play with almost to all trials on, so my choices on that wheel matter to me when I'm trying to portray a certain character and their relationships with other characters.. Someone getting a response by accident that makes them disapprove is like kicking me in the junk six-hundred times. You see a greatly disapproves..and you know that they will hate you until the devil saves the universe from the heat death
      I'm amazed it kept me engaged for 90 hours(not close to being done), let alone a single hour.. Most games bore me before I have half an hour with them.
      I enjoy..playing the side quests; however, I do play on hard and nightmare with the trials active.. so I also enjoy the difficulty of it, the side quests don't seem so lackluster when you're clawing at the very essence of survival for merely hiking into the hinterlands, and god forbid you see a bear before level 8(60 hours)!
      That quest for collecting the bear claws.. I was level four and three of them kept popping out of nowhere! lol

    As a horse back rider of almost 20 years I gotta say the horses in DAI are some of the best when it comes to honest control. Sure the animations are a bit stilted and the detail movements at least left me feeling like I was riding a large animal with some weight and pull to it and not an fuzzy stick with some legs. Seeing as how they used the same base frame and animations for all the different breeds and sizes it's pretty much the general middle ground of 'yea I get it'. Nothing like the god awful non-attempt skyrim did and in all my years of playing WoW I still get motion sick for my toon when ever we need to mount up. It will be a nippy day in hell when game animators take the time out to look at animals when attempting to animate them in games. I mean did you see the wolves? That alone made me cringe and go 'have they ever seen a dog? Do they know how to walk themselves?'. While some of the animation left me jumping for joy (ei the not fully static magic animations and fancy staff spins) 99% of your characters movements make it look like the poor bugger dropped a load in his pants. Always hunched over and never moving their arms past elbow height like the animators couldn't be assed to remember how a person stands. Women are the worst since they didn't bother to give them their own animations let alone base frames to make it look generally acceptable. My inquisitor always looks like she's airing out her pits and is afraid to let her shoulders drop from ear height. And that's just elves poor dwarves go through high chances like the plague and are copped up and down for size correction for ever cut scene.
    So yea, horses were pretty nifty.

    I would like to ad that the world was empty as fuck it was getting close to AC lvs and the whole how you got the mark story was written and presented so poorly that my reaction was something like this i.makeagif.com/media/11-29-2015/RuCh3i.gif
    Edit: side quests are horrible for the most part, some characters are plain ass boring, assassins class is broken, playing as mage/warrior can get boring/annoying at times and haveing only healpots is stupid and will make you backtrack from time to time (at least if you are as paranoid as I am)
    (there are more flaws but I cant remember atm)
