Today's upload is an early version of Painkiller, one of the many Pendulum vs. Freestylers collabs. The earliest mention of this track that we're aware of is Rob announcing on 2005-09-16 that it'll be revealed at Pendulum's BBC Radio 1 Essential mix the following day. The version they played is the same as the one you're listening to right now 😉 www.dogsonacid.com/threads/pendulum-radio-1-essential-mix-sat-17th-sept-1-00-am.327212/ From that point on, Freestylers begun playing it in their sets, such as Freestylers @ Amsterdam Dance Event on 2005-10-28. Adam F also played this version at Pirate Station IV (2006-01-28). On 2006-03-09, Ben XO announced his "Endangered Speakers" mix, which has the final version Painkiller. By this point the demo would've been considered obsolete. Before i list the differences, it should be noted that Painkiller on the 'Adventures In Freestyle' album is a shortened edit of the full track - all drops were reduced to half length. The 12" vinyl release and Painkiller promo CDs do contain a "full version", albeit with a different master (with compressed mono vocals) that was intended for vinyl. You can listen to the ATG019 promo cd version here: czcams.com/video/C3qVEa6qMP8/video.html The original full length version of Painkiller with the intended mixdown does exist as it was played live both by Pendulum and Ben XO but remains unleaked / undiscovered as of today. So with all that out of the way - here's the stuff that's different about the mid 2005 demo vs. the final: - This demo has the full layout and isn't cut down down in any way - The overall mixdown is different, less highs, drums are a bit more dominant - 0:42 buildup has extra snares - 0:45 this bit of sweeping fx is unique to this version (later replaced by a looping "killa killa" vocal in the final) - 1:03 no sweep riser - The lead into the verse at 1:05 is different - 1:37 no "u-uh" vox here - 1:40 no echo/delay fx from the predrop fill guitar - 1:59 no sweep riser, no extra fx leading into the next section - 2:02 no rob vox - this section is instrumental in the demo - (2:43 there are "u-uh" vox here so it's only missing from 1:37) - 2:55 short guitar fx thing missing - 3:06 this fill is entirely different - 3:19 sweep fx missing - 3:26 no extra fx leading into the next section - 3:29 instrumental again - 3:46 a small square based synth is missing from here - 4:02 no rob vox here either - 4:11 extra build snares - 4:37 short guitar fx thing missing - 5:21 sweep up fx missing - 5:26 no fadeout on ending Our recording of this demo is off Adam F's personal "Fire VIP / Painkiller" dubplate. No remake magic here - it's the real deal, straight off the acetate record 😎 We already have an upload of the Fire VIP side, so check the channel if you're interested 👍 P.S. If you or anyone you know has a Painkiller white label please let us know (either via twitter DM or a comment below), we don't have one and would like to check exactly which version of Painkiller ended up on it. Thx! Brought to you by: Dagny linktr.ee/shredtune Cherry linktr.ee/cherry412 Hope you all enjoy!
Yesterday, my heart skipped a beat when I received a notification about a new video on the channel. And it was no longer there... (in my head: damn, damn...😂What happened to them?) And now I look at how much information there is about the track, and I have a smile from ear to ear. Incredible job! Thank you))))))) It was worth the wait🙃🤘
Oh whoa I coulda sworn I saw this on your channel years ago, but was that a remake? That was my first time hearing Painkiller so I'm actually used to having no vocals in that synth chorus at 2:02 haha! This song always gets me so pumped up
I love the more mid heavy, organic drum centric mixes. When KJ did the drum rework of Colourfast, I was over the moon. At one point they (and everyone else) went super heavy centric around the kick and snare for the mix and DnB, and the Pendulum unique sound of organic instrumentation mixed with electronic sort of died. That's not to say I don't enjoy tracks over the years, it's just an aspect I missed deeply.
Pendulum & Freestylers - Fasten Your Seatbelt Pendulum & Freestylers - Painkiller ft. Sir Real Pendulum & Freestylers - Security (a remix of The Beat Club - Security) Pendulum & Freestylers - Bad Boy (unreleased)
Other collabs off the top of my head: Pendulum - Fasten Your Seatbelt (ft The Freestylers) Pendulum - Tarantula (ft Tenor Fly of The Freestylers) The Freestylers - Security (ft Pendulum) There's probably more though, they did quite a bit together back in the day. Edit: I should probably have refreshed before replying, I didn't realise others had commented before I got to it. :P
@@notrobswire Wikipedia's article on Tenor Fly mentions it as well as their article on the Tarantula / Fasten Your Seatbelt single. If it's wrong, blame whoever put that there. :) I know at the very least he was with them during their live shows for a while, but I don't have the time right now to check if there's an official source for him being a member, given Wikipedia can be unreliable.
probably none at the moment. no hold your colour instrumentals cd has been leaked or made public at this time (our only clue is a track called S.A.S. - Tarantula having instrumental bits from Pendulum's Tarantula)
This reminds me that I used to have a download of the Kouncilhouse remix of Painkiller but I lost it, and it got removed from my Beatport library as well. All I can really find, at least on youtube, is of poor quality.

- 1:40 no echo/delay fx from the predrop fill guitar
- 1:59 no sweep riser, no extra fx leading into the next section
- 2:02 no rob vox - this section is instrumental in the demo
- (2:43 there are "u-uh" vox here so it's only missing from 1:37)
- 2:55 short guitar fx thing missing
- 3:06 this fill is entirely different
- 3:19 sweep fx missing
- 3:26 no extra fx leading into the next section
- 3:29 instrumental again
- 3:46 a small square based synth is missing from here
- 4:02 no rob vox here either
- 4:11 extra build snares
- 4:37 short guitar fx thing missing

Amsterdam Dance event mentioned LETSGOO
Please never stop uploading these absolute gems!
Wow, that vocoder part from the final version really adds something! Didn’t know that was Rob’s.
It does, but it's really interesting hearing the instrumental in the gap, like it's setup for an mcee to jump in on a live session
it's always Rob 😂
Absolute Tune!
i remember stumbling across this track on my days lurking on Dogsonacid. i loved it immediately and didnt know about Pendulum at the time of course.
I’ve been a regular listener of Pendulum since 2008. Thank you so much for keeping their older music alive and well.

accidentally made it public before it was ready.. oops!
@@notrobswire Tickled my nerves)))))). But I was looking forward to this track with double impatience. It turned out to be a great announcement!🤗🤗
Awesome! Thanks so much for sharing!
this is awesome!!!! :D
OG Pendulum cannot be beaten
got used to this version than the released ver, specially the fact that it has no rob vocals on it lol
great upload as always!! what a throwback ngl

the old upload was based on the freestylers ADE 2005 set rip though in retrospect the quality wasn't that great!
Ah I see I see
It's amazing how you find all these demos
Love ittttt

This sounds very good
The mixing on this sounds better to me than the final version.
The low mids are way muddier and the bass is less powerful, I've gotta disagree
@@chameleonedm I think just that is why I like it more. The less powerful bass.

"One of the many Pendulum vs. Freestylers collabs"
Really?? I thought painkiller was just the one, which other tracks are these collabs?
Only other two tunes I know they collabed on are Security and fasten your seat belt
Pendulum & Freestylers - Fasten Your Seatbelt
Pendulum & Freestylers - Painkiller ft. Sir Real
Pendulum & Freestylers - Security (a remix of The Beat Club - Security)
Pendulum & Freestylers - Bad Boy (unreleased)
Other collabs off the top of my head:
Pendulum - Fasten Your Seatbelt (ft The Freestylers)
Pendulum - Tarantula (ft Tenor Fly of The Freestylers)
The Freestylers - Security (ft Pendulum)
There's probably more though, they did quite a bit together back in the day.
