  • Collated from various sources - this is a quick and easy way to view a wide selection of the MTV Idents without hunting around You Tube. The Ads date from way back in 1981 when the station opened, to circa 1995 as the golden age came to an end. Denis Leary idents aside, this compilation comprises the 10, 20 and 30 second clips rather than the longer ones they also ran (Things Never Seen, Joe's Apartment etc).

Our cable system got MTV about 8 months after it started (so that would put it at about Spring 1982). I think I watched it at least four hours a day, between 1982 and 1986 when I went off to college and lost interest.

There's a generation of animators and stop motion photographers who really got to shine doing stuff like this before computer graphics was really a thing.
Its a shame these are mostly uncredited as far as I can see.

I was a kid when mtv first landed.... Bro, you had to be there. There was no such thing as Internet, music CD's werent invented yet, social conscious was in a different place and no such thing as a dedicated music channel on tv. It was a most profound game-changer. The first 4 years of mtv were the most artistically creative images and sounds you ever seen and heard on television. In just those 4 years, MTV inspired more artist and musicians than any network on televsion. If I could go back, I would.

Its not that it couldn't stay just videos. They started remote control.A couple other things. It was ok it was all music related or close tonit, part of pip culture. Then it became a lifestyle channel I guess. And a lifestyle that the fans who carried it their first 20 years or more weren't even interested in that's what I don't get. Then they made mtv2 for just music and maybe an extra or 2 is all but it quickly became just MTV the pop culture channel part 2.And it was a rock n roll station like old FM rock stations, then added a little crossover appeal with rock/country like Alannah Miles etc and pop music, pretty soon rap and hip hop.Well ok,i agreed with that,a core of rock n roll but widen the audience. Then the music booted out rock/country,booted hard rock or metal, then rock all together, until only rap and hip hop and quite a bit of pop remained. And the tv shows only appeal to rap hip hop and pip music pop culture type fans by the big share. Maybe MTV should consider like FM stations,a rock station, country, rap and hip hop, jazz and r and b station, & a station that features hall of fame inductions,MTV and movie bear, aetc. And consider a "classic" MTV,like a classic rock station on FM.Could be huge. How about a "Rock and Wrestling" like started with Wrestlemania and Cyndi Lauper etc?You never know!?

I'm a substitute teacher, and one of the classes I subbed was discussing the mid-80s cold War tension. At the base level, all they had to do was read Dr. Seus's Butter Battle Brawl, which was written during this time.
About a week prior, I watched this compilation; it got to the section where they were promoting "99 Luftbalons" and kinda had an epiphany: "This song came out only a few decades ago. Only a few decades back, and we'd all be full of existential dread." A few days later, I learned what I was going to be subbing on. I thought "to these kids, the mid-80s must seem like an eternity ago." When I came in to do the class, before we even started the assignment, I told the students to try think what it would have been like living I that time, and then I started playing "99 Luftbalons". It was arguably my favorite session subbing.

The real secret of these idents was figuring out which bands did the background music. For example, @ 7:41 that was clearly 'the police'. Stewart copeland's kit is tuned in a unique way and his Crashes hit like no other crash ever recorded around this time. Andy is clearly the guitarist here and that bassline a a tyical Sting bassline when hes not focused on singing. Even the way the drums come into the bass line is sooo COPELAND! Thats the hidden value of MTV idents.
