      Only thing I'd say, is being hunched over while trimming will kill your back! Work on that technique. Adjusting the grip might help. I personally used a harness and bicycle handlebars when I was running FS 200/220/250s, could easily go 4hrs and occasionally ran them for 6hrs a day, doing drainfields, ditches, roadsides and around buildings. I am only 5'5" though, so theres a chance its just doesn't work out for use shorter folk.

      They were going around and "inspecting" some of our irrigation components.
      They pulled up a backflow station that was a dead end. I pulled the pipe truck up behind them and we parked a skid steer on the only other side that they could get out.
      They got out wanting to fight until they realized there were a lot more of us than the two of them.
      We alerted hospital security and they were arrested for trespassing. They also paid my boss an undisclosed amount for the damage that was done to our valves and heads.
      It's pretty crazy because they had to pass two of our trucks to get behind the building where we caught them.
      They worked for a business that was well established in our area. Apparently, the new boss had some problems. After 40 years they ended up going out of business about a year after our incident.

    Setting a realistic goal of how many customers/lawns you and your business can handle, and knowing how many is too many is key, because that's when your service values and care go down and you're resources are being stretched too thin. Once you reach your customer quota for a full schedule, it is an easy task to lose a customer here or there because you have already told potential clients that you are booked full. These potential clients could be told, "when we have an opening, would you like us to call you?" Gap is filled, so I commend you for for your business practice in addition to your lawn care. And to tell the truth, I watch your videos for reason a few folks have mentioned in the comments below, because I want to know how to take better care of my lawn, thanks!

    I always said once you get established business will come to you. Make the customer's lawn look great at a fair price. People will ask who is doing it. I get calls daily for estimates. I have a well know lawn fertilizer company that recommends us only. We take care of alot of their customers. If you have to advertise or try and take customers from other companies you aren't any good. Sometimes the truth hurts. If I realize people are happy with their service and only price shopping my estimate is usually inflated. If they do it to them they will do it to me. If they are unhappy with their service and need a new one my estimate is in line for that area.

    Hey Shawn got a quick question on how you guys mowed the first yard on this video….why didn’t you guys mow the whole yard the same direction? I seen that you started mowing in one direction in the bigger part of the yard and your wife started mowing the front you was mowing in the other direction. Is that just because mowing the longer lines makes you get the yard done faster and less turn around?

    • @kyyuhl
      @kyyuhl Před 2 lety

      you are correct. if you were stripe the lawn, you’d want to keep the same direction of course, but with normal cutting, whichever way has the longest passes is best. you also have take into account any trenches, ditches etc. in the yard. better to cut parallel to those to avoid scalping going up, down and over them.

    Hey Shawn, I am starting a lawn business and want to know for the future, how do you take payments? Like some people say they have a card on file but how do you charge the card?

    • @cameronmcgehee
      @cameronmcgehee Před 2 lety +2

      Use a payment clearing service like PayPal business, Square, Stripe, etc.
      Or also set up a PO box in case they want to send checks or maybe even cash, which is nice since there will be no middleman taking a cut.
      A cashbox in your truck might also be nice, since a few customers do actually come out and pay you while you are there.

    • @WestanLandscape
      @WestanLandscape Před 2 lety +1

      I usually take cash if possible, but in the future I will probably have more yards and people won't always be there for me to collect cash

    • @cameronmcgehee
      @cameronmcgehee Před 2 lety +1

      @@WestanLandscape Yes of course, I just mean for the few customers who happen to come out when they see you and pay you. Elderly people that just stay home 90% of the time for example.

    • @cameronmcgehee
      @cameronmcgehee Před 2 lety

      @@Liimpy I guess, I prefer to send my own custom invoice from my own web backend with the link since its more professional - all major payment systems like square and PayPal are secure regardless of whether you use their invoice system or not - I just tie into the API of the system and my site handles the rest. Of course thats assuming you know how to web develop which is really useful for running a service business like this.

    Question for TQ, do you believe the Stihl power edger is worth the money or are you able to accomplish the same thing with a regular string trimmer to do the edging? Just wanted to know what your thoughts were on the pros and cons of edging with a specific power edger or using a string trimmer? Thank you.

    • @cameronmcgehee
      @cameronmcgehee Před 2 lety

      In my experience you need a stick (I think that's what you mean by power?) edger if the dirt has gone over into the path more than about an inch, otherwise just use the string trimmer.

    First comment is why would someone trolling for business say they are providing a “free” estimate...”Here’s your free estimate.” Like they are doing someone a favor. Of course an unsolicited estimate is going to be free. Get rid of the word free everyone. It sounds silly. Having said that, Nice that your customer is sharing the letter with you, but absolutely nothing wrong with the letter...that is what the nature of competition yields...a good value for a fair price. I’ve seen your channel before and I notice you do point out how you do certain things and offer explanations and advice as to how or why you do certain things which is, no doubt, important for some of those viewing, and I do like that you have a well-presented business from your equipment to your “uniforms”. Also, excellent “Y” turns by both of you on the stand-ups to avoid zero-turn-burn spots. I like how the wife throws the trimmer up over her shoulder along the cement...pro move...I do have a pro tip or 2 for you myself...stop trying to flip the cone...seriously though, in job #2 of this video...a couple things...since the mower deck can not contour to the dip/bottom of the ditch when you come down the hill (perpendicularly) you want to run two parallel (to the hill) cuts (opposite directions are best in order to disperse the clippings away from the bottom of ditch) running along the bottom of the ditch which will get the grass at the bottom of the trough-cut to the same height as the rest of hill, the grass looked a little shaggy at the bottom of that ditch after you were done, and you may want to take care of removing those leaves in the ditch. Once and for all clean them up so you are not having to deal with them each week and your customer sees that they are gone. Regardless if the customer asked you to do so or not. That’s how you set yourself above your competition. Especially since you only do the ditch for her. It would have looked much better as the finished product. Simply blow them out of the tough spots in that ditch, put a grass catcher on your deck and suck them up. Would take less than 5 minutes, and would be a quality result. Yes, you would have to carry a small grass catcher for just that occasion. You get the compliments with the constructive criticism. That’s what makes you better.
