- Gone Are the Days! (aka Purlie Victorious / The Man From C.O.T.T.O.N.) is a 1963 American comedy-drama film starring Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee and Godfrey Cambridge. It is based on the 1961 Broadway play Purlie Victorious, which was written by Davis.[1] Davis, Dee, Cambridge, Beah Richards, Alan Alda and Sorrell Booke reprised their roles from the play. This was also Alda's film debut.
A young, idealistic man returns home to the plantation where he grew up in servitude. With him, he brings his fiance, Lutiebelle, in hopes of convincing the plantation owner that she is really his cousin in order to secure the family inheritance. To aid in the comic complications that follow are his family members Missy and Gitlow, and the plantation owners endearing (but ineffectual) son Charlie. - Wikipedia/TCM Database

Wow, a very young Alan Alda & Godfrey Cambridge!!
Man oh man do I miss theses two beautiful people.and I absolutely loved their acting.may God rest their souls.
Wow actress Ruby Dee she’s beautiful!
No doubt!
Ossie don't look bad either
Yes we do have fun "being colored when nobody's looking!❤❤❤🥰🔥
Ossie Davis' absolutely magical writing and performance is the best I've ever seen! I'm so grateful to know movies like this existed, and I'm so glad I get to revisit some I've seen through the decades, especially the 60's and 70's. I feel I could write volumes about this production, all saying, wow!*
🗣🎤 Young Mr Ossie Davis with younger Ms Ruby Dee in the audience. 💞
Beautiful couple they have been!
Beautiful couple indeed
THIS MOVIE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT TODAY AS IT WAS BACK THEN. SAME PROBLEMS AS IN 1963.
I have this on DVD! I used to watch it EVERYDAY!!!😍 MY FAVORITE!!!💖💛💚 I probably know the entire script!!!😂🤣😭💀 Rest in Power Ossie & Ruby!😘
Ruby Dee has a sister named Eurie who worked with my mom at Huron Rd Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Ruby and her hubby (Ossie Davis) came for a visit. Eurie shared with them some hot tamales that my mom had made. They loved them. That made my mom soooo happy! I still have that recipe.
❤😊
The Brilliance of Ossie Davis. This was priceless!!!!
Ruby Dee looks like a combination of Taraji P. Henson and Jasmine Guy.
Facts, deep facts💯
Wow..she sure does a combination.
Ruby Dee & Ozzie are stunning. I'm grateful to have this masterpiece of Black historic theater to reflect upon.
Ruby Dee reminds me of Jasmine Guy in this movie.
@Beverly Beverly yep. Fake as a four dollar bill.
Sure does
Yes
Love Ossue David and Ruby Dee. Just beautiful actors and actress❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤
I love this movie and anything with Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, and Beah Richards in it!! I first saw this movie years back when TV One first came out. They don’t show the oldies anymore, but thanks to Reelblack we get to see them and much more. Thanks Reelblack 🙏🏾🖤
Was it me or Ruby Dee was something else back in the day? This was a funny but deep film.
And sadly, still relevant today.
Right up till she was old. A babe!
Ossie and Ruby were two of the best...period. Both were brilliant. Growing up watching them two on the screen...almost every thing they did made me proud to be African American. Their art and skill gurgled in greatness, ever resounding "black lives matter."
Outstanding!
What a find! Absolutely 💯 love this movie along with the stellar performers that made it a winner.
I love this entire cast of outstanding actors and actresses. Outstanding!

This should be a required viewing in all schools!
Old fashioned good looking for real
Seeing Ossie and Ruby on screen is so angelic. Everything they touched turned into gold. Just today I road past a park that is named after her, in New Rochelle New York. I know their in heaven together still in Love 🙂🙂

I have been looking for this since my late 20s, for those that don't like this movie, I thought it was funny and thought provoking. This is what happens when you don't pay attention

I wanted to give a big shoutout to the creators/members of the reelblack page. It brings me so much joy to survey the masterful collections of beauty black people who demonstrated brilliance, resilience, bravery, legacy, superb-talent & skill, beauty, style in all corners of the world & universe. 1963, Ossie and Ruby Dee were probably around 46, 41. Wow, they look much younger!
Thanks!!!
Thank you for sharing this film. I will encourage my students at Miles College, in Birmingham, Alabama to watch.
Anyone else noticed Captain is Boss Hogg from the Dukes of Hazzard 😂😜
Black men use to have a strong face, strong jaw, I love black men, you could see the authority in them, feel it,......................:
Black people our lives does matter, long over due, for many things. Yet while we've been going about this life, something happened to us mattering to each other.
we have to matter to each other🤗
I ❤️ black men too
black lives matter was started by homo sexual LGBQ people ...black lives do matter but not to LGBQ P
people who are using this organization to push their sinful agenda to push homo sex its not a race
Wow... Thanks for posting! 1963😃... How brave and excellent. Humour, dialogue, message... And the true intelligence of "Step and fetch it" characters revealed. Loved this movie!!!
After seeing Ruby Dee's performance, her range & diction,I now know where the "Whitley"character that made Jasmin Guy a TV show sensation originally came from
I mean the "Whitley" character on the 1980's TV show "Different World" had to be an imitation of Ruby Dee's performance in this film copied to a T by Jasmin Guy
Just saw the Broadway play with Leslie Odom, Jr., Excellent!! I had to find the original. Thanks for posting.
Godfrey Cambridge is a hoot! And Sorrell Booke is giving it all he got! He's a hoot, too! Both awesome artists in this work of art!
Great performance by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee : Ruby is so beautiful
And she was 41 years old!
Thanks for the upload. Love some Ozzie and Ruby. Classic on classic...lol
Wow. Timely dialogue, even in 2020.
I’m 31 & I love this movie lol it’s funny &Ruby Dee is gorgeous
Just came from seeing Purlie Victorious on Broadway. Had never heard of this and it was hilarious. Can't wait to watch this film!
This channel is the truth period point blank.
Thank You Thank You Thank You. Imy daughter has loved this since a little girl ... and we couldn't find it 🎉
In the '60s, when I was a child, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee visited Montclair NJ to visit Mr. and Mrs Jones. Almost every 4th of July...they'd visit the Jones family. the Jones were my grandparents' best friends, they attended St Mark's Church...we were pre-teens and there were no selfie cell phones or even the idea of intruding on their privacy by taking pictures...
So happy about still being able to find these old movies🙌
My Mom used to sing I Feel like a Motherless Child. 🤗😭
11:25
That's that old lady from the train in Coming to America 1. The one who got the diamond earrings.
“Hey where did u get that great big ole knot?”
“Miss..I mean mosquito”
“Must’ve been wearing brass knuckles”
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Thank you , Great movie 👏🏻👏🏻💖🤗💯!!! I always loved Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee🤗💖!!!
The choir in the beginning though was SANGING!
wow 2023 just seeing this, what a gem
Saw a local version of this with my grandparents in 1987 in Fresno, California. Kinda wild how James Coco basically took his Captain Cotchipee character and tweaked it for Boss Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard.
I saw this play (the Clifton Davis, Melba Moore version) in the 1970s!! I have been searching for the album (or any version) for YEARS!!! Leave it to Reelblack to Deliver!! Saving this one. Thank YOU again, RB. Always in your debt!! 💗💕👵🏽💗🌱
Spotify has the soundtrack.
Purlie (1981) | Robert Guillaume, Sherman Hemsley, Melba Moore
reelblack Thank you! Thank you, merci beaucoup & muchos graçiás!! You are loved & appreciated! 80s? Really? How the years fly.
I too saw the play in the 70's. The music has stuck with me for a lifetime.
@@vegascece I wonder how the composers achieved that? Or was it the rare chance to feel connected to the actors in an ‘extended family’ way? But the lines & lyrics succeeded in having that kind of staying power in the memory!! AND it’s not just me. 🥰😂☺️💝🎄
Ruby is stunning 💯💯💯
The current production of PURLIE VICTORIOUS on Broadway (The Music Box Theatre) is MAGNIFICENT! It's a limited run, ending February 4th, 2024. The cast is absolutely brilliant!
I saw this as a child in the early 60's and laughed my ASS off!!!
Love this..I think I was too young to appreciate the wit, truth and humor in this movie. Thank you for sharing.
I had forgotten about this movie. I am so glad to see it thank you

Yep, maybe I saw it here and not on TCM.
When I finally understood what they were rejoicing about, I ABSOLUTELY LOST IT. I mean , I was not expecting that , AT ALL. I wasn't even born yet but I still appreciate that opening scene. Thanks reel black because I'm definitely feeling your channel . Oh and one more thing, Ruby Dee was hot in her day ! Ossie had extremely good taste.
"Well whats ha name??"
"LudieBell GussieMae Jankins!"
We have got to continue to educate our young people about the great shoulders on which they stand. How our peeple use their art & creativity to educate & you foster liberation, revolution & freedom. It is so vital. Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee. The "Martin Luther King & Corretta Scott King" of theater & entertainment. 💯
thank you!
The very first Broadway play I saw ( Melba Moore was phenomenal ❗️❤️. Sherman Hensley as Gitlow was crazy funny. He went on to become our beloved George Jefferson. 🙂 ) Great Play Production 1❤️🖤💚 Luv

I was looking for Purlie (stage version) when I happened upon your channel. Subby for life!! You have outstanding content, with so much entertainment I remember from my youth/teens that I have never watched. Where's my popcorn because this is going to be a long relationship! TY!
The revival of PURLIE VICTORIOUS that is running on Broadway for several weeks more (ends 2/4/24) is FANTASTIC! See it while you can! It is so beautifully done! ♥️
(The play, not the musical version, although I hope there will be a revival of that, too!)
Omg one of my favorites

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful film. It is much deaper in spirit that any movie I have ever seen. This movie moved my spirit in ways I have never been moved by any movie. WOW! I got so caught up in the script, I forgot it was any part comedy and got caught up in the Dramy. I wish I could purchas it on DVD. I am so glad I found the site.
I like this movie 🥰
You are awesome! Always ahead of the game!!
Thank you! Love this channel ❤
In his early movies whenever Sidney Poitier appeared to be married his wife seemed always to be Ruby Dee .
In the comments I read that someone had noted that Davis and Ms Dee were 46 and 41 at the time of the movie . Most likely since of their birthadys are rather late in the year they were probably 45 and 40 . But they , especially Ms Dee photographed young .
👏 TY
Who came here after seeing Purlie Victorious on Broadway?
I really dont know much of this flim? But the actors are great.
This is so good! Love❤Mr Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee. Wondering if Hilda (Missy) is kin to Octavia Spencer, they sure do favor.
THAT'S ALLEN ALDA FROM MASH
Is that boss Hogg?
Yes sir, it is. Also note that here the Confederate is vilified, whereas later on for the Dukes of Hazzard, it was much more appreciated.
oohwee oohwee That’s him! I recognized his name in the credits and his face. He also played the same type of role on the Dukes of Hazzard.
