I'm just telling it the way my grandmother told it to me. She said it as a joke, but you could tell by the glint in her eyes that she meant every word.
And my grandfather knew she meant it, too. He never so much as raised his voice to her.
They didn't always get along, but they never resorted to physical or emotional abuse.
From my understanding, he was an alcoholic, but he was always mindful of his ways around her. For her part, while she complained about his drinking, she never laid a finger on him, either.
My dad's solution to getting angry with my mom was to go out in the backyard and sit, putting some distance between him and my mom. That gave them both time to calm down. This happened only once in my memory, but my mom told me he had done it a couple of times over the course of their marriage of 20 years.

I suspect it's because if you play, there are two ways to win: get all the answers, or take away the obvious ones to leave the hard ones for the other family to take only one guess at. If you pass, the only way you can win is saying a non-trivial answer that the family who played did not select. By these measures, it seems more tempting to play if given the choice, if you ask me. However, maybe there's something I'm not considering!
