Back in 1996, SNL had, as hosts, every single candidate on the Republican Primary ticket prior to the primary in 1996. I still fondly remember the ironic juxtaposition of RATM and Steve Forbes. SNL didn't just magically become "woke", Lorne Michaels is still at the helm, as he's always been, but he PANDERS to whatever the zeitgeist of the moment is. Today everything has to be "woke" and thusly, not funny. You'd think they'd care about ratings and money and NOTHING else- leave the political brainwashing for CNN, et al... but nope...
