    Also most newer cars have a cabin air intake filter. They get quite dirty often, and rarely get changed.
    I prefer slowest fan speed to give the spray/vapor more time to condense.
    Sometimes 3 days in a row might be required for a strong infestation. As required until smell is gone.
    I also give mine a retreat about once a month.

      HotRod Ray not all vehicles are as easy as some but good point. The paper OEM filters are just that...cheap paper media. I recommend K&N washable/removable if it is available for your model. Since the K&N requires air dry.....not too difficult in the Texas summer sun but still probably a good two-four hours to air dry. You can either stay home and catch up on DVR, use another vehicle or as last resort use the OEM paper media filter as temporary filter until the K&N dries..... for temporary use any filtering media is better than nothing. Also depending on vehicle and your climate I recommend inspection about half what the owners manual says. My Ford manual says R/R every 20K miles. I got curious one day and checked it at 15K. Wear looked like well over 15K miles. Also another recommendation is have the new filter readily available. If for some reason you need to change your not going back in there twice. That is my general rule for most normal wear/tear items. If not needed they can be returned or kept on hand for future use.

      Another trick for me and works for a few days. I spray a fairly liberal coating of Febreeze on the new filter. You get a nice fresh blast of freshly scented air for a few days. The scent is up to you but I usually use Hawaiian or something tropical. My theory is if I can’t bring the vehicle to Hawaii then I will bring Hawaii to the vehicle.

    @Peter Rebristy Great video! This problem literally happened to me overnight. I parked my car on a slope after running the A/C and it had a weird fishy smell the next day that even lingered when the A/C wasn't running. Would using Microban do a more thorough cleaning job since it doesn't contain ethyl alcohol and works for up to 24 hours?

  • @memnoch1974
    @memnoch1974 Před 4 lety +46

    If it smells like mildew/old newspaper, you have mold. If it smells like fish or burnt wire, you have bacteria. Either way, this method works. Do recommend for the filter to be removed first before spraying. I would spray the cowl and thru the slot were the filter was for better coverage and penetration.
    You may need to repeat if any of the odors come back after the lysol smell dissipates (about 2 days).
    Replace your filter twice a year. After spring and before fall.

    Recommend pulling fuse if compressor is electric (likely hybrid; allow lysol to work warm)?

    My routine is to take out cabin filter (as you have mentioned in your updated note) to insure unobstructed flow of spray. Aside from the hood air input vents (fresh air vent switch on) I spray a bit on top of the running AC blower, this time with recirculation switch on.
    And yes, turning AC off leaving fan on a minute before shutting engine off, helps dry evaporator. Say a few hundred meters before parking car.
    Your video helped reinforced what I've been doing. Thank you, Sir.
