Oh yeah. I remember some interview years back explaining that ND wanted to make Nitrus Oxide playable but couldn't because N. Oxide's assets had too large of a memory footprint to allow him to work in the rest of the game correctly. His boss area is smaller memory wise and built specifically for him, unlike the rest of the game.

Is it just me or does CTR beat any other kart racer in terms of sense of speed. The ability to snake and boost infinitely really gets the adrenaline pumping for drift junkies
A lot of Mario Kart games are like that as well but you need to do some kind of exploit like snaking. It does feel great. I love this game.
What I love most about CTR is the sense of skill progression. Speaking from the perspective of somebody who has played several Mario Kart games for a few hours each, in Mario Kart it doesn't matter how good a driver you are, a noob player can still beat you because the Items are immensely powerful (though, a better driver will most likely win more games). In CTR the Weapons are not as powerful, meaning that a difference in driving skill weights much heavier. Also, because the weapons are much weaker, there are far less BS moments like Mario Kart tends to have, wheer you are just bombarded from first to last place.
@@TheCassiusTain In most Mario Karts i'd agree but in Mario Kart double dash skill matters, though some items of are powerful, most can be avoided either the way you can avoid them in most Mario Karts, red shells for instance can be escaped from by boosting after a drift at the right moment, in some areas, mostly uneven road they most often miss as they just bounce off the road leading to that you shooting the red shell has to think when to shoot it, items also cant be pulled behind the vehicle leading to that players cant be blocked by rows of bananas for instance which consequently means you also need to drop the banana peel at the right time so you dont get hit.

Oh and I also never played 8 Deluxe until after writing this comment and I do fully believe that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe exceeds CTR in every way but the way drift boosts are handled and that it is, all things considered, the better game.
@@TheCassiusTain I dont mean that CTR is bad, i've never played it, all i meant was that not all mario karts are super reliant on items and are like throwing a dice, though mario kart Wii and 7 are extremely unfair in my opinion

I felt alone in absolutely loving CTR back in the day. None of my friends had the game or cared for it, but I still 101% completed it and had a blast doing so. I'm glad to see in the comments that it gets a lot of love. I don't think it needs a remake but I'd look forward to one regardless. It better control the exact same though!

TheCassiusTain Cortex Castle is my favorite track in the entire game! I think I had more trouble beating Oxide in Crash Cove and Coco Park and the Komodo Mines than any other tracks.
I have started a new 101% run a few days ago and I can beat Oxide first try on any track sans Cortex castle. I reallydon't know why, but I just can't take the narrow passage right befre the second and third spider without either drifting outside way too much or hitting a corner. I got him eventually on this track as well, but it took me several tries while I have done every other track first try
+TheCassiusTain I had trouble with papu papu's track. Doing those 90degree turns with tiny flawlessly three time was torture and, then taking that jump shortcut right after and possibly failing it thus losing the race especially on lap three was beyond infuriating.
+zombieaids I usually use Coco or N.Gin for the tracks with tighter turns, as they still have good speed and that tiny bit of handling that Tiny and Dingo lack for those corners. And yeah, scaling that Pyramid is a bitch with Tiny.

It's funny coming back to this and hearing about how hard Oxide's times are because with CTR Nitro Fueled as it is now... yeah no Oxide's times are easy shit compared to what we have now.
So, context for those who need it: In Nitro Fueled, near the end of the grand prix's, they've not only added a third Time Trial challenge, the Velo trials, which are faster than Oxide, but then they also added Developer time trials, which are even faster than Velo. They are hard enough that the Crash Cove Dev time is literally only a mere 2 seconds under the world record, and the reward for beating them all, the master tires, aren't even listed in the customization menu until you unlock them. Also add in the fact that we don't just have to beat these for the CTR maps, but also the added Crash Nitro Kart maps, and the bonus maps added for each GP, for a total of 39 tracks compared to OG CTR's 18.
Although, they at least give some sweat rainbow tires for the dev times, like them rectifying the reward problem for Oxide by giving a cool digital N. Tropy skin for completing the CTR and CNK Oxide times, and a Champion kart decal for beating the GP Oxide times as well, with another decal for beating all Velo times.
Out of all the kart racing games mania of the 90's, CTR was for sure among the best of them.

I really suck at racing games. I suck hard at them. My friends sometimes managed to do laps in front of me in Mario Kart. I pawned them in fighting games, though.
I personally like how hard it is to complete the game 101%. Gave me a real sense of achievement back in the day.
I think they wanted to give you Nitros Oxide as a reward for beating all of his ghosts, but the thing is, his model size is larger than the regular racers. You can get him with cheats, but the game crashes (heh... Crash) if you try to use him in Versus races and even in some Time Trial tracks. The game doesn't know how to handle it, so they probably just decided "Eh, fuck this" and threw him aside.
He became playable in Nitro Kart though
Oxide was never intended to be playable. Actually Oxide was intended to be the least likable character in Crash history in an effort to hurt the brand to get back at Vivendi Universal for cheating Nuaghty Dog out of the rights to Crash.... it had the opposite effect as Oxide proved popular enough to become a canon character in future Crash titles like Crash Bash and Crash Twinsanity

CTR was so innovating . The boost drifting was just perfection.
You can't play as Oxide because he's enormous. Oxide Station was built as a huge track especially for him. If you use Gameshark to play as him he takes up almost the entire screen with the default camera view and most of the powerups look weird when you use them.
HeadOfBucket you might be right but I still think it would be cool, if they remastered this, they should add him as a cheat code only playable in certain modes after you did all trials and got 101%. That would be the ultimate reward :')
it'll be fair when later they remake CTR and make Oxide playable with his own kart, than his Hovercraf. then remaking Penta stats to his own original stats, then we've two Maxed out stats playable races.

1. They are remaking this game which is out next week on the Summer Solstice.
2. Nitros Oxide is unlockable along with his hovercraft, but you can get him via the Nitros Oxide Edition.
3. Penta is back, but as an advanced class character.
To be honest, I like the Crash Bandicoot racing games are as a guilty pleasure.
I would suggest Crash Bash next, but i don't want to put Jirard through that level of torture.

I just 100% Crash 1 in the N. Sane Trilogy, and I had a blast! It really bugged me that they kept that stupid no dying thing specifically for the colored gems, but at least every other gem allowed you to die as many times as you need. It also took me a while to get adjusted to the different controls, which made The High Road absolute hell for me. Outside of those two things, Crash 1 was done expertly. I'm moving on to Crash 2 in an hour or so.

The Slippery Climb Red Gem is a massive pet peeve right now.
Mr. Coffee Guy I normally don't die at all in that stage, but I probably died 30+ times my first go, when I redid it later, I only died a few times. I think we're just too used to Crash 1's controls.
The high road levels were made for heavy weight, and crash is made a little more agile, so you have to slightly stop when jumping on the said platforms.

The CTR engine is based on Diddy kong racing, The racers are 3D models, unlike Mario kart which has 2D racers, and the first demo level the team made was one of DKR's levels

This game has a hardcore fanbase in my country, 'till this day there are lots of CTR tournaments, videos and a solid community, this game requires a lot of skill to dominate, but is also enjoyable for casual play.

I think Papu's Pyramid dabbled in both of these with the discount Piranha Plants. There probably should've been more of it, but at least it's there.

Ah, I disagree. I unconsciously hum the most iconic themes, at least 1-2 from every iteration Naughty Dog did like Warped's Toad Village or ending theme, Crash 2's bear chase levels, Crash 1's first levels' themes, and so on. In fact I was just humming the theme for CTR's first "world" for its campaign lul.

Crash Team Racing was the first racing game we ever owned and, with Mario Kart after that, I can no longer play any racing game where I can't blow up the people in front of/behind me.

Tom Yep, if you make good use of the awesome momentum system in CTR then getting 101% is a very reasonable and fun challenge. The staff ghosts can be kinda frustrating though, not honestly worth beating them when you get nothing.

I used to play this game as a kid on my older sister's PS1
If there was one thing I was unsure about with this game's controls, it was the placement of the button used to fire weapons.
Instead of being the Square, it was the Circle, so if you wanted to be ready to press it at all times, you had to uncomfortably straddle your thumb over both it and the accelerator button.
I personally think it still looks and sounds great. Hands down the best kart-racer

Aw I loved getting the relics as a kid, I loved how each and every one of them was a challenge and not just a silly collectible barely hidden away.
The actual gameplay and racing mechanics in this game were perfect. Unreal how fluid they were. If they could make it look like the new Insane Trilogy with the same mechanics, that would be godlike.

i was the lucky kid with both the ps and n64, and this game felt really modern in the Days. The characters were 3d and well animated, the tracks were very good looking and even though I havent played this game in years I remember and love everything u showed in the video haha

Oh man, this video hit me with a huge blast of nostalgia. My dad and I used to play this game all the time when I was a kid!
This was practically the only PS1 game I owned and spent many hours on during my childhood. I recall memories of playing this with my sister when we were younger and we both had a great time together. Later on, I did play Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Tag Team Racing and enjoyed those games as well; however I enjoyed CTR much more than the other two.

Two reasons: One was that Normal Boots realized that their site was extremely disjointed with their creators and content. They weren't collaborating enough and it seemed like Normal Boots was going to dissolve (again). So they met up and decided that they should commit to collaborations and projects. Jontron said that his only focus is the Jontron Show, so he would not work on these projects. The other reason is Bad Press from expressing rather controversial views on Twitter. Identity Politics mostly.

I played CTR hundreds of hours with my friends back when it came out. One of the best times of my childhood!
This game was fucking tits. It was so tough, but damn it was good. My brother, his girlfriend and i finished the game 100% (or whatever it was called). It was so much fun, we all played the same save game, even when we were not together so it was fun to guess who were good enough to do the different challenges.
