    Just a little tip for you when loading your filament from the buffer. Move the selector on the MMU3 to its corresponding filament slot by pressing either the left or right buttons on the MMU3 itself. Then push the centre button on the MMU3 and it will start the load process for you, just push the filament manually until the MMU3 has grabbed it and it will trigger the Super Finda then park it for you.
    Repeat for all 5, you don’t need to go into the menu at all.
    On the filament placement, Prusa’s suggested layout is just that, a suggested layout for optimal operation.
    You can place them on a shelf above, below or wherever they happen to fit in any place you like, just so long as there aren’t any horrible kinks or bends in the PTFE tubing it will work just fine.
    Happy printing👍

      Ok good to know. I did swap some out and it seemed like a pain waiting for just the right time using the menu. I am hesitant to put them above or below if it makes them harder to swap. But maybe I just need to put 5 new rolls of the colors I always use and leave them. Thanks!

    Just wanted to say thank you. I bought the MMU3 and simply followed your step-by-step videos without using any other guidance. I assembled the unit with no issues and am enjoying the product. You made my life a lot easier - so thank you again for taking the time to do this. A small note for users that use Octoprint, you need to login and update your printer settings to x5 extruders and shared nozzle otherwise the system will not change colours during the print unless you use a SDCard. Just a heads up for anyone else who performs this upgrade and thinks whats wrong :)

  • @erichowarth
    @erichowarth Před 8 měsíci +1

    Thanks for making the whole series on the MMU3 assembly. I have the MMU2S so I was interested in the differences for if/when I get the upgrade.
    Seems like the buffer is improved from my version, but still really looks awkward. Especially given that I have an enclosure. I just feed from my dry box with two separate PTFE tubes so that the excess just goes in the air when the filament retracts to the MMU. So far no problem with that, but I'm sure at some point I'll get a tangle.

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting  Před 8 měsíci

      Oh that's interesting. The buffer is what irritates me the most! I'll have to think about this. Thanks!

  • @venados65
    @venados65 Před 8 měsíci +2

    Hello, yeah the MMU2s was really clunky as well. I sold it and bought a Palette 3 Pro(8 colors) which was a night a day difference with my Prusa mk3s+ printer. I bought an X1C with ams system so I no longer need the Palette 3 pro looking to sell it if interested.

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting  Před 8 měsíci

      I feel like this is just a revamp of something that's outdated. I think I would like it better on the MK4? The MK3S and this MMU3 just seem ancient together. I am really curious about the X1C especially since it seems so compact. Is there any other buffer or anything that takes up space outside of the printer? What's the overall size? Thanks!

    • @venados65
      @venados65 Před 8 měsíci

      @@tada3dprinting the Palette 3 pro does not requiere a buffer system because the machine just pulls the rolls and keeps the rest gripped until it needs the other color. It doesn’t take a lot of space because it’s just the palette and the spool holder. The holder holds four spools on top and four on the bottom. If interested give me your email so I can send you my FB’s marketplace posting.

      The problem is MMU technology (on any printer) is a bodge......and a pretty rubbish bodge at that. If you want a decent high quality 5 colour/ multi material print in a realistic time and without a ridicules amount of wastage (purge tower) you really need a tool changer, and that ain't cheap.

    I've had my mmu2 set up for a little while. Swap out your nozzle with a .25 nozzle and print some business cards for yourself. Minimal waste on purge blocks and it's an easy thing to hand out to show it's capabilities.

    Yah, I think the best solution will be multiple hot ends, but that drives the price up beyond what most hobbyists are willing to pay so people have come up with solutions like MMU, ERCF and even Palette to make it cheaper even if slower.
    Looking forward to seeing your MMU and 5 tool XL prints.

    Not too bad for a first print with something build from scratch. I am sure you will figure out the layers shifts (or someone else already did with theirs). Side note: the Prusa Mini got input shaper too now (still an Alpha release, but it works!!). Soo much faster prints. There are some small issues still but overall... it's amazing so far.

    I have an old mmu2 and in regard to space I find a mix of spool holders has worked for me vs the buffer. It doesn't look as nice but here is what I've used for 3+ filaments - I put filament one and two on the included mk3 spool holder one side of the printer with the mmu unit slid to the other, everything still fit just fine. for filaments 2-5 I used a 'gravity spool holder' that you can find on printables. They can be a little lowed but worked great. Nothing stopping you from using 5 gravity spool holders but I needed to save a little space. Best case is if you can put them up above your printer on a shelf but this worked for my space.

    Looks like the purge tower warped, it could have caused the nozzle to hit it and shift a layer. I like the Ikea Lack table / Repbox combo to have the filament rolls neatly in one place and out of the way.

    Thank you so much for this video. I have an MMU for my MK4 on order but after seeing your video I decided to cancel it. I better go fr an XL then with a dual nozzle. I print in over 20 different colors on a day to day basis and while the mmu would help me with less black and white changes just changing a spool would be too troublesome. Also the whole MMU setup seems to cost a lot of space I noticed. If you have the luxery of multiple machines then i guess the MMU is fine for some fixed colors but for a single machine user like me this would probably bring more hassle then it would bring benefit. I hope you get a XL with multiple extruders one day in your reviews. Thanks as always.. very informative.

    For loading filament, I pull off an arm's length to feed easily from the spool to the buffer. Faster than inching it in. Then similarly from buffer to MMU3. But I open the top of the MMU3 to make loading easier, rather than using the menus to automate the loading. I don't recall having that menu option on the MMU2 (or I just missed it).

    Thank you for the videos. Please keep us updated on the actual experiences you have with it. I've had really bad experiences with my MMU on my MK2.5, and it never really worked, so I'd be really interested on how the new one is.
    Also concerning the space it takes up, and the really horrible filament loading:
    There are some alternatives to the buffer, like gravity spool holders (Printables). And I can suggest putting the spools either below or above the printer (below is probably better for the Bowden tubes). You can also but them in 2 rows (3 in the back and 2 in the front, with the PTFE tubes from the 2 routed between the other spools, I hope you understand).

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes I am still trying out different things to get used to using an MMU. This is my first. I think once I am sure I am not going to have any unloading issues (which I have had some) then I'll start working on the footprint. Yes this makes sense. Thanks!

  • @scifimodelshop
    @scifimodelshop Před 8 měsíci

    After seeing this layout I cancled my MMU for the MK4 was a layout process, I would thought the MMU would unload and load the pla into the hotend this is a clumsy Bambu setup. I put that money to use on different printer mayble a another MK4. I have just printed up some scout awards and MK4 does a great job of doing a color change with out MMU just have to watch the printer asking from color change. It unloads the PLA and ask you to load it back up then prints the color. When XL get into reproduction I made look to that printer later

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes if you have ways around needing an MMU, that may be better for you. I usually just print multiple parts in different colors and glue together. And an XL does seem better than this. We'll see when it shows up!

    The prusa MMU series 2 is known for how unreliable it is and most people who bought gave up and removed it. do you know what they changed in the MMU3 to make it more reliable?

    • @TonyNaggs
      @TonyNaggs Před 8 měsíci +3

      Look at the Prusa Blog MMU3 post from July for a bunch of details. Some things I remember: more messages between the MMU controller and printer to give info about problems on the display instead of flashing codes on the MMU LEDs; bigger internal diameter of the PTFE tubes to reduce friction/jams; automatically retries cutting the filament end after reload fails. Search on the blog page for "acknowledge" for a list of links to community mods for the MMU2S that Prusa referred to for inspiration!

    • @tada3dprinting
      @tada3dprinting  Před 3 měsíci

      I ended up removing the buffer and setting up the spool holders on a shelf above. The amount retracted back out just left slack mid air and didn't tangle the roll. But I felt the angle from above was a little too sharp. I am sure there are better solutions out there. Stock seems like a silly setup
